Tomorrow the winner of the #InternationalBooker prize will be announced. I managed to read 5 out of 6 of them (I didn‘t read Heart Lamp yet).

I have especially enjoyed Perfection, Under the Eye of the Big Bird and On the Calculation of Volume I but my absolute favorite is Small Boat. I hope it‘ll win the prize tomorrow.

Do you have a book you root for?

Bookwormjillk I haven't read any yet, but I did take an online quiz that said Under The Eye of the Big Bird is the one I'll like best so I'm rooting for that one. 5d
AnneCecilie I‘ve read 4 and I‘m hoping for either Calculation or Small Boat (edited) 5d
Lesliereadsalot Waiting for Small Boat on order at my library! I also too the online quiz and it also came out Under the Eye of the Big Bird. 5d

Jas16 Impressive! I have only read one of them but it was the one you are rooting for. 5d
Gissy I‘m always behind in my readings but I own one book and ordered another one. I will read them anyway 🤷🏽‍♀️I wish I could have more time to read and wish I could read faster. But that not my reality, they are waiting for me 😄 5d
BarbaraBB @Bookwormjillk @Lesliereadsalot I had high expectations for The Eye of the Big Bird but it fell a bit short to me 🤷🏻‍♀️ 4d
BarbaraBB @AnneCecilie I would be happy with Calculation too. I already read the second book and fortunately they have all been translated in Dutch already! 4d
BarbaraBB @Jas16 Good choice 😉. The longlist was very good this year - and lots of short books! 4d
BarbaraBB @Gissy You always read the good ones ❤️ 4d
AnneCecilie @BarbaraBB I have read all 5 of the Calculation books and is waiting on the next one. 4d
BarbaraBB @AnneCecilie Are they all so good? 4d
AnneCecilie I think so 4d
sarahbarnes I didn‘t get ahold of copies of these as fast as I wanted to, but I‘m excited to read the rest of the short list soon, including the winner. 2d
BarbaraBB @sarahbarnes I need to read the winner too, I am very curious about it! 2d

This is a hard book to read, especially considering what‘s happening now in Israel and Gaza and that it was written in 2014.
It‘s so complicated, Arabs and Jews living in and fighting for the land they feel it‘s theirs. What if all Palestinians vanished from Israel one day?
Ibtisam Azem tries to write from various pov‘s and that just shows how complicated it all is.
A poignant #InternationalBooker book.

Tamra So anxious to read! 2w
BarbaraBB @Tamra it‘s an important read I think 2w
GatheringBooks I don‘t think i have a copy of this one yet - and now i am wondering why in the world is that. I have to remedy that, stat! 3d

Based on a real event where 27 migrants drowned in the Channel because the British couldn't get to them in time and the French wouldn't help, even while the boat was still in French waters. A semi-stream-of-consciousness narrative where the French navy emergency dispatcher tries to justify her actions and her words, refusing to bear the collective guilt and responsibility of society. Powerful and uncomfortable. #InternationalBooker #Booker

BarbaraBB Very uncomfortable indeed. One of my favorites for the prize! 2w
Suet624 Oh gosh. I didn‘t know that‘s what the book is about. But of course I have to read it. 2w
Graywacke I‘ve heard a ton of praise for this. Looking forward to it. 2w

#WeeklyForecast 19/25

I am reading the second volume of On the Calculation of Volume. Such an interesting story.
Next will be the new Mieko Kawakami (in Dutch, it isn‘t translated in English yet) and last but not least I‘ll continue my #InternationalBooker journey with The Book of Disappearance.

Gleefulreader I‘m reading On the Calculation of Volume I and I am utterly fascinated by it! 3w

GatheringBooks Oh wow! This is a fantastic collage. I plan on doing a half year post of all #ReadTheWorld2025 posts on GatheringBooks and this just might be central to that post - it‘s amazing! Which one is the book from Iraq? Is it Fundamentally, because I already have that one. 3w
GatheringBooks @BarbaraBB i will move it up my TBR stack, then. 💕 3w

This #InternationalBooker novel is based on a real case where a dinghy overfilled with migrants attempts to cross the Channel and starts sinking.

Most of the book consists of thoughts by a coastguard radio operator, who‘s being interrogated by the police because of her alleged complicity in the death of 27 migrants. We are drawn into her conflicted consciousness, displaying what appears to be an almost inhumane coldness and indifference. ⬇️⬇️

BarbaraBB Is it her voice or that of all of us? What about humanity?
It‘s a morally complex read but one that is relentless and will keep me thinking for some time to come. Very good.

#WeeklyForecast 18/25

I am in the middle of The Mangan Inheritance which I am loving. Next will be the tagged title for the #InternationalBooker and I also want to read My Documents, that @TrishB nominated for #CampLitsy25 and caught my eye in the bookshop the day after!

TrishB I haven‘t brought yet but it‘s on my payday purchase list! 4w
sarahbarnes Small Boat! Can‘t wait to hear your review of that one. My Documents caught my eye too from @TrishB. And now I‘m interested in the third one although I haven‘t heard of it. 4w
BarbaraBB @sarahbarnes I‘ll keep you posted on all of them 😉 4w

BarbaraBB @TrishB Thanks for bringing it up. Seems so good. 4w
Megabooks I almost picked up My Documents from the library, but it‘s one of those books that hits a little too close to real atm. 😢 3w
BarbaraBB @Megabooks I get you, I don‘t enjoy dystopian at the moment either. But this one is a bit different because it doesn‘t focus on politics or circumstances but more on human interactions 3w

I‘m not sure what I feel about this novel, but maybe a soft pick, guess only time will tell.

A story about a young girl growing up in a dysfunctional family and where her parents mantra is “That‘s the way it is and that‘s that!”

Another book of the #InternationalBooker Longlist

BarbaraBB I have missed this one somehow. Not sure if I should read it? 1mo
AnneCecilie @BarbaraBB It has won a prize and I have seen others loving it. So it might just be me? 1mo
charl08 I've struggled to get into it, but hoping I get hooked soon... 1mo
sarahbarnes I can‘t get this one from my library yet and didn‘t want to buy it…. 1mo

“Every 2 hours and 25 minutes, a woman in #Mexico is strangled, raped, dismembered, burned alive, mutilated, beaten to pulp, and left with bruises and broken bones.”

Combine these gruesome facts on femicide with living the high life of drugs, money, cosmetic surgery and Instagram followers and you probably have the span of Mexican society and of this #InternationalBooker collection of short stories. A good one
#ReadingTheWorld2025 book 13 🇲🇽

Tamra Sounds rough! 1mo
GatheringBooks Ooh! A perfect gruesome book to read for #ReadTheWorld2025 indeed. 1mo

At first I didn‘t know what to make of this book. Were it loosely connected stories, all set in a fantasy setting? YA maybe? And then I got it and I got the message. A book that packs a punch in a quite unexpected way(to me) and well deserves its place on the #InternationalBooker shortlist!

sarahbarnes Glad you liked it too! I agree I‘m glad it‘s on the shortlist. 1mo
