1. Yes, I'm always thirsty.
2. Just finished the tagged Jack London book accompanied by hot cinnamon tea and Starbucks hot cocoa. The book was set in rugged Alaska wilderness and I needed the drinks to keep warm. 😋☕

Just a short novella, but pretty much the blueprint for so many of the plague stories out there. Disturbing in the fact that it was written over a hundred years ago and only missing the Covid years by 7 odd years… ooooo chills down my spine.

I‘ve read this before, but I didn‘t remember it and wanted to revisit it. I liked the beginning well enough as Martin is discovering new things, but I enjoyed it less as the story went on. I want Martin to find something real in what he‘s searching for, and instead he‘s never satisfied leading to a tragic ending.

My first London story and yes he can write; really damned well. Semi autobiographical tales from his youth when he road the rails as a Hobo, challenging the Shacks, wandering day to day across America and Canada. If you want to understand what the life of a rambler was like at the turn of the twentieth century this is a good starting point.

Buck did not read the newspapers, or he would have known that trouble was brewing, not alone for himself, but for every tide-water dog, strong of muscle and with warm, long hair, from Puget Sound to San Diego.

Visiting Jack London‘s “Beauty Ranch” (state park) in Sonoma County. His book Valley of the Moon was set here. It‘s a gorgeous place!

TheBookHippie Wow!! 13mo
Karisa @TheBookHippie I learned so much about him! His wife was a writer too, they traveled the world bringing their record player, they built their dream home at Beauty Ranch (looks like castle ruins) only to have it burn down just before moving in, he died there at the ranch at age 40… 13mo
TheBookHippie @Karisa It‘s so fascinating and how sad about the ranch. I love history. 13mo

A tragic success story, underlining the struggle of the classes and the futility of wealth.
