From the 2020 #manbookerinternationalprize shortlist is this novel about German folklore prankster Tyll. A bit of a bleak novel about life during the Middle Ages, specifically the 30 years war in Central Europe, I found this novel a bit difficult at times. The separate storylines didn‘t always seem to relate to each other or be necessary, and I had to look a lot of the historical events mentioned up. Overall it was an enjoyable read though.

My personal shortlist for #MBIP2019 #ManBookerInternationalPrize
My opinion - interesting and diverse longlist, but unfortunately very weak. Worthy candidates for shortlist are only three books (Shape of the Ruins, Four Soldiers and The Years) ... the other three are interesting, worth reading, but not strong enough to be shortlisted.

BookwormM I loved Ruins and 2 of your short list I haven‘t read 6y
Simona @BookwormM The Years and At Dusk? I think that is interesting that The Shape of Ruins is the only ‘classic‘ novel on the longlist and I would be very surprised if it won‘t be on the shortlist... 6y
BarbaraBB Interesting to see your choices. I haven‘t read any of them. Will the shortlist be announced tomorrow? 6y

Simona @BarbaraBB Yes, tomorrow is the big day, and I‘m really curious about announcement! 6y
BookwormM At Dusk and Four Soldiers I also predict Years will go through 6y
Simona @BookwormM I just looked at your blog post and our predictions couldn‘t be more different 😁 6y

Home is #SoFarAway when you‘re driving with a dead refugee in the trunk of your car from Morroco to the Netherlands. And where is home actually when your parents are Morrocan but you are born and raised in the Netherlands? Neither feels like home. The eternal dilemma of the migrant and the current flow of North Africans crossing the Mediterranean form the core of this novel.

Cinfhen Your review makes me want to read this book, even though @Simona gave it a so-so. But im gonna go library route #BorrowNotBuy 6y
BarbaraBB @Cinfhen it is a #borrownotbuy kind of book indeed! I would have send you my copy but I‘m afraid it wouldn‘t be of much help 😉😘 6y
Cinfhen Hahaha!!! You‘re so sweet and I see it‘s in Dutch!!! How awesome 🙌🏻😂😂 6y

I can‘t tell you why my rating is so-so, because I can‘t figure it out why and what doesn‘t work for me in this story about 2nd generation of migrants - for the first time in Morocco and on the way back to Netherlands experiencing some bad things. The narrator‘s view point on the subject is interesting and quite fresh, but I‘m not sure of everything else ... ⭐️⭐️⭐️ #MBIP2019 #ManBookerInternationalPrize

Cinfhen The premise sounds great and the writing looks good. Was it the (lack of) length? 6y
Cinfhen Was the subject matter to uncomfortable?? 6y
Simona @Cinfhen The subject is tough, but I don‘t feel uncomfortable about it. I have the feeling that this was originally a short story, prolonged into novella. 6y

BookwormM I didn‘t enjoy this one. The blurb promised me one kind of book and then gave me something completely different. I think I would have appreciated it if the girls had actually grown up and taken responsibility for their actions 6y
BarbaraBB @BookwormM @Simona @cinfhen I did enjoy it because it is very recognizable for me: the story of 2nd generation Morrocans in the Netherlands. But I also felt like that should be what the story was about - now there was a lot more and not all of it worked well. (edited) 6y
Simona @BookwormM @BarbaraBB I don‘t think that it was bad, I was between pick and so-so, and I‘m almost sure that this one is going to be on my shortlist, but unfortunately it was also very unsatisfying read for me... 6y

Four Soldiers: A Novel | Hubert Mingarelli

Beautiful captured moments between a group of soldiers who are waiting for the next battle. While the story is plotless, chapters and sentences are short, written in simple prose, the final effect is the opposite of this modesty. Rich in emotions, but without sentimentality, and while this story is set in wartime it is (almost) without battlefield. Elegant and absorbing. #MBIP2019 #ManBookerInternationalPrize ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Another short story collection from this year #MBIP2019 and another one for which I feel that the stories, as a collection, are too weak for shortlist. Main thread through them is how to make sense from incomprehensible events. In most of the stories the narrator is child, living a life in a war/conflict zone (we don‘t get information about where and when, except in one story) dealing with devastation, violence, desperation ... All stories are 👇

Simona ... permeated with a sense of tragedy through the narrator‘s naivety, as well as with irony, bizarre and strange situations. Readable, interesting, peculiar and recommended for fans of black humor. ⭐️⭐️⭐️ #ManBookerInternationalPrize 6y

A quite novel about the changing world is set in Seoul, told through alternating chapters between young woman struggling with everyday life, while following her dreams, and architect who grew up in the slum, and now, after successful career he wonders about his responsibilities - to the society and decisions made in his personal life. Interesting concept, and I assume, that this is also very accurate look at life in Seoul now and in the past⭐️⭐️⭐️

Dark and disturbing short story collection - some are excellent and some aren‘t so good. I liked unusual, eerie elements in them, but sometimes they felt too strange, just in purpose to unsettling the reader and to shocked them. While I do think that this is an interesting collection, with very intense, and at same time very calming prose, I don‘t think that this collection is award winning material ... but I recommend it 👇

Simona ... if you want to read something unusual. #MBIP2019 #ManBookerInternationalPrize 6y
BookwormM Have you read Fever Dream? How would this compare if you have? 6y
batsy Great review 😘 I loved Fever Dream so I'm interested to read this. 6y
Simona @batsy Thank you ☺️I think, that you will enjoy 😘 6y
Simona @BookwormM Yes, I have, but I like this short stories more. The writing style is comparable, I think that she is strongest at creating the atmosphere and she is successful with this even in the very short stories, but her lack is in the making of some point/statement, to make some conclusions, what I felt as the weakest point in Fever Dream. 6y

Gilbert is convinced that his wife has cheated on him,he flees to the Tokyo where he becomes a ‘friend‘ with the young man who wants to commit suicide.Together they explore suitable places, following the path of the poet and traveler Bosho. I‘m in very conflicted situation with this book. Story is in many points, well, pointless and messy ... and if I compare it with the others from longlist - quite weak, but I did enjoyed in prose and its oddity.

Story is set in the Chile after the fall of Pinochet‘s regime and the focus isn‘t on the direct victims of the dictatorship, but on the second generation, children of those who fought against the repression. I think that this was great idea, to tell the story how dark parts of the history doesn‘t end with a single generation. Story is told through two main characters, which are diametrically opposed to each other in perceiving events around ... 👇

Simona ... them. The author perfectly succeeds in showing this contrast through the prose (two extremely different types of narration), but unfortunately the chapters quite quick becomes very repetitive. While I do think that the prose is beautiful, premise of the story very intriguing and that characters are interesting ... 👇 6y
Simona ... but I also think that the execution is weak, lacking of something more deeper and constructive, and especially hallucinogenic end spoils the whole story. #MBIP2019 #ManBookerInternationalPrize 6y
BookwormM I enjoyed this one 6y
Simona Definitely it was not bad, but I call ending like this - lazy, and ends like this absolutely spoils my previous enjoyment. I‘m unmerciful with such ends ... 🤷‍♀️ 6y
