I cant give you a photo of wild islands and massive shipwrecks but heres a yacht that ran aground locally for you! 😂
Like @Cathythoughts i saw that this is now a movie and thought i‘d read the book 💕 Amy returns to the Orkney islands as a recovering alcoholic. She explores nature while she contemplates her past life and possible future. Sometimes meditative writing can leave me cold but i just loved this.⬇️

Centique The balance of self examination, scientific tidbits and nature writing was just right. I ended up reading a chapter or two a day before sleep and it was really calming. There are some beautiful sentences in here, some simply put but profound thoughts. Definitely a case of the right book at the right time. 2h

Another island story. Orkney. I saw that Saoirse Ronan will play the lead in the movie of The Outrun, so I wanted to read the book. I loved the island setting, the wild unforgiving and beautiful landscape, the cliffs , and the basic close to the earth lives the islanders live.
I‘m looking so forward to the movie now.

andrew61 I read the book years ago, Cathy, and have recently seen the film. It is an excellent film and saioirsie ronan is incredible although as you can imagine tough watch at times. My wife, who hadn't read it, also loved it. 1w
Anna40 Is it a memoir? Sounds wonderful. 1w
Cathythoughts @andrew61 Thanks Andrew, I‘m looking forward to the film. Yes I imagine it will be tough too. 1w

Oh, how I loved this one. Liptrot's writing is beautiful, and her story is raw and vulnerable.

After getting sober (again), and determined to make it stick, Liptrot leaves London and returns to the Orkney islands. What follows reads like a series of essays as she delves into various aspects of island life, nature, and considers her own sobriety.

TheKidUpstairs It is a thoughtful and vibrant read, you can feel the windswept chill of the islands. And the last chapter brought tears to my eyes. Highly recommend. 2mo
BarbaraBB Great review. Just what you expect of a book set in the Orkneys I think! (edited) 2mo

Part history book and part memoir of this author's journey into becoming a shepherd and custodian for the breed. It also delves into the difficulties living on a small island with the sheep when it comes to getting then processed into meat and tanned hides as well. I appreciated the author's commitment to living as naturally on the land as possible, and finding ethical processing. I look forward to spinning this wool some day.

This is the 1st time I've heard of a grab and hold method for sheepdog work. Pretty smart of the farmers to come up with this. Necessity is the mother of invention indeed! Hopefully the teeth file down wasn't to the dogs detriment.
