The Patchwork Girl of Oz | L. Frank Baum
post image
Mehso-so

The young Munchkin Ojo is on a quest to save his beloved uncle. With friends like Scraps the Patchwork Girl, the Glass Cat, & the Shaggy Man, he will travel across Oz to save his family.

I feel so weird about this. I love Ojo, Scraps, & the Glass Cat. But reading this now, I don‘t like Ozma‘s banning of magic except for Glinda & the Wizard, & I really don‘t like the final treatment of the Glass Cat or the Wizard Ex Machina at the end.🌕🌕🌗🌑🌑

BookmarkTavern Because, basically, it‘s “We don‘t like how the Glass Cat behaves, so we‘re going to give her a lobotomy and change her literal brain so she becomes humble and docile and a Good Pet for Ozma.” 2d

The Patchwork Girl herself is pretty fun, but most of the other characters are annoying. I‘m getting kind of sick of Baum‘s formula of “some characters get together and travel around Oz, encountering all kinds of weird people and things that have never before been mentioned existing, and the problem is solved in a way that could have been done all along.” I did enjoy the bits of romance between Scraps and the Scarecrow.

Part two of a movie musical based on a stage musical based on a book based on a movie musical based on a book. Phew!

#BookAdaptations

Semi serious question. I‘ve been going through my books trying to get rid of some (none so far 😅) and I found my copy of Wicked I tried to read back in high school. Should I give it another go?

Soubhiville In my opinion, no. I read 2 of his books years ago and honestly don‘t like his writing style at all. The blurbs on back of his books sound so good, but I have ended up really not liking them. 3w
rubyslippersreads I love the Wicked musical and The Wizard of Oz in general, and I did not like the Wicked novel. (edited) 3w
BarbaraJean I vote no as well. I loved the musical and hated the book. I really liked the tagged book by the same author, which I‘d read years before, so I WANTED to like Wicked, but I did not. Go with your high school self‘s opinion! 3w

BookBr Just to play devil‘s advocate, I LOVED the book and disliked the musical. I thought Maguire really created a solid vision of an Oz for adults, if that makes sense. Lots of weird fairy tale elements to love too. 3w
Prairiegirl_reading I also vote no. I thought it was a disappointment. 3w
Susanita I liked his book about the tooth fairy but bailed on Wicked. 3w
willaful I liked his children's books but didn't get into Wicked. 3w

Haven't a clue what's going on in that picture, but I had to use it.

I saw the #BeyondTheYellowBrickRoad group reading this & was surprised I couldn't place it in my memory. I've definitely read it multiple times but I think it must be one I didn't go back to as an adult. Not hard to see why... Dorothy and Ozma are both kind of obnoxious in this one and I feel bad for Uncle Henry and Aunt Em. Still lot of fun to be had though.

BookmarkTavern Ozma is a little on her high horse in this one, isn‘t she? 😂😂 4w
willaful @BookmarkTavern She's the perfect, kind ruler... just don't disagree with her! 😱 4w

Pickpick

W/ the bank ready to foreclose the farm, Dorothy decides to plead to Ozma to let Uncle Henry & Aunt Em move to Oz. At the same time, the Nome King has decided to invade Oz.

A much more solid plot. Nome recruitment & war planning alternates w/ Dorothy showing new places of Oz to her family. There‘s also a huge increase in puns 😆. The ending was a little disappointing, but I‘m also no longer the real target audience for Ozma‘s speech.🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑

I liked that this book had a bit more of a plot through-line than others. Of course, the invasion plot chapters are interspersed with Dorothy having adventures and meeting silly beings all over Oz. Lots of puns and bits that are very reminiscent of Alice in Wonderland. It really grates on me that Dorothy never thinks that if something can reason and talk to you, it deserves to choose its own fate.

BookmarkTavern I‘m looking forward to this one! 1mo
willaful Agreed! Ozma is a bit dictatorish too. 4w
Clare-Dragonfly @willaful Yes, it‘s like only a few characters in Oz are people, and those people have no problem making decisions for the non-people inhabitants of the country. 4w

I read another Oz book today. Gathering these stories into collections like this one makes sense because they're so fast-paced (and sort of...pointless?). There was an especially fun cameo appearance by a non-Baum magical being, and the book ends with Dorothy still in Oz, which is different. #beyondtheyellowbrickroad

Dorothy again finds herself traveling through fairy lands & meets a variety of characters on her way to Princess Ozma‘s birthday party.

Baum has such a way with creating unique, beautifully absurd characters. We get to meet Polychrome, Button Bright, & the Shaggy Man! & one of my favorites Johnny Dooit. Button Bright may be silly, but it strikes me that if more people were willing to admit they didn‘t know something, we‘d be better off.🌕🌕🌕🌗🌑

Soscha I‘m trying to remember how far I‘ve read in the Oz odyssey. Into Ruth Plumly Thompson‘s Famous Forty. It‘s an ongoing series really, the OZ foundation ppl or similar name, canonizing further books. (edited) 2mo
BookmarkTavern @Soscha I‘ve only read one or two of Thompson‘s, so I‘ve been debating continuing through. But you‘re right, it is ongoing! The most recent book recognized by Baum‘s estate according to Wikipedia was published in 2014! (edited) 2mo
willaful @BookmarkTavern quite a few of the characters at the birthday party have their own Baum stories. 2mo
