This book was absolutely packed with information about L Frank Baum and the extraordinary time period in which he lived. He also seemed to have been present for, or just on the heels of, most of the major events I knew about during this time. He was at the 1893 Chicago World's Fair, for example. Loncraine did a phenomenal job pointing out possible influences and making connections between Baum's real and fictional worlds.

The Red Butte Garden has an After Dark exhibit through the 30th of October!

It‘s called Trouble in Oz, and the whole garden is done up like the fairyland!

Movie references, book references, Wicked references, oh my! Takes about an hour to walk through and was an absolute delight!

"Baum's ability to create vivid, odd characters and varied, weird kingdoms wasn't matched by an ability to build well-structured and satisfying plots." Isn't *that* the truth? ? #beyondtheyellowbrickroad

The Magic of Oz | L. Frank Baum

Pickpick

Ozma‘s birthday is approaching, and her friends are determined to get her gifts that she doesn‘t already have. This involves lots of adventuring all over Oz. Oh, there are also some people with secret magic who want to conquer Oz. This was fun with the Glass Cat and all the talking animals, and even some genuine peril.

I love the way this artist draws the Wizard. He looks so slick and clever. #BeyondtheYellowBrickRoad

Mehso-so

The Tin Man remembers the girl he promised to marry & goes on a quest to find her. W/ the Scarecrow, a boy named Woot, & an enchanted Polychrome, they‘ll face many weird & wonderful things in Oz.

I love the buddy road trip & the friendship, but I forgot that this is the book that introduces the fact that nobody ever changes or dies in Oz. Babies stay babies, the old stay old, & your chopped up body parts remain alive independent of you.🌕🌕🌗🌑🌑

AlaMich That last one is ICK! 4w
BookmarkTavern @AlaMich Yeah! I had completely forgotten what happened with the parts of the Tin Man and the Tin Soldier. I had to put the book down for a bit. 😅 4w

rubyslippersreads I‘m certainly glad they left the Tin Man‘s “creation story” out of the 1939 movie. Of course, we‘ll get another version in Wicked: For Good. 4w
BookmarkTavern @rubyslippersreads it‘s a really disturbing backstory any time you stop to really think about it. I‘m looking forward to seeing how the movie interprets the musical. 4w
Clare-Dragonfly Huh, I didn‘t see this book as introducing the fact that no one ever dies, more clarifying how it works in practice! I had wondered how there could be kids and old people and everything in between, and now that part makes more sense. The body parts aspect is very weird, though. 4w
BookmarkTavern @Clare-Dragonfly I know it isn‘t the first to say no one dies in Oz, but it‘s the first time that I really understood how it applied to body parts. Which, now that I think about it, Langwidere showed up several books ago, so I probably should have had this realization then. 😂😂 4w
Clare-Dragonfly @BookmarkTavern I was thinking about her and her heads but she‘s not technically in Oz, right? And I don‘t recall any of her heads being animated on their own… 4w
BookmarkTavern @Clare-Dragonfly Right! She‘s in Ev! And I think you‘re right they‘re not animated until she puts them on. This is such a weird series. 🤣🤣 4w

Somebody points out to the Tin Man that he never reconnected with the girl whose love caused him to be chopped up and turned to tin. Time for an adventure! The usual random bizarre assortment of creatures and places await. I appreciated Baum explaining a bit of the history of Oz becoming a fairyland where no one dies, though as a mom I‘m horrified at the prospect of babies staying babies forever. Then again, if they can‘t die, maybe not so bad?

BookmarkTavern Yeah, I had forgotten that part too! 😅 4w

Princess Ozma has been kidnapped, & all the magical artifacts of Oz have vanished. Dorothy puts together a team to rescue the lost princess.

I remember loving this one as a kid, because it‘s a dramatic search & rescue, all the girls are together, & my favorite animals. And I adored the bears. I also appreciated the resolution with Ugu. But I hadn‘t remembered the Lion or Scraps being quite so condescending to every one around them. 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑
