Monstersaurus! | Claire Freedman
post image
Mehso-so

And now for something completely different.

Monty loves inventing things. Even if they don‘t always work. When he finds a book with instructions on making a monster friend, he has to give it a go.

It‘s bright and cheerful and fun.

For a book with fewer than 50 words in total, that was surprisingly tense! It really is a thriller (with a fox and many hens). Beautiful illustrations.

Still going on #BBRC #picturebooksAtoZ @BookwormAHN @LibrarianRyan

BookwormAHN Nice choice 🦊 5y

The Good Egg | Jory John
post image
Pickpick

Not what I was expecting at all. The Good Egg spends so much time being a good egg, his brain starts to scramble and his shell starts to crack. So he takes some time out, lots of self-care and eventually finds his way back to his less-than-perfect friends and stops trying to change them.

I think geared towards older children.

squirrelbrain Sounds like we should all read The Good Egg! 5y

Loved this book picturing about what all different types of children in different places see outside their window. #picturebooksatoz #bbrc #o @LibrarianRyan

The Name Jar | Yangsook Choi
post image
Pickpick

A Korean girl moves to New York and is teased about her name on the bus. When she gets to school she doesn‘t share her name. Her classmates leave potential names in a jar for her. Over the course of the story and with the help of a friend she realizes she can still cherish her Korean culture and name in the U.S, and her classmates make the effort to welcome her and pronounce her name properly. Sweet immigrant story. #bbrc #picturebooksatoz

Night Shift | Debi Gliori
post image

‘Night skills: the ability to survive inside my own darkness‘

Totally opposite end of the #PictureBooksAtoZ spectrum, but equally awesome. This is a beautiful adult picturebook (no, I didn‘t know that was a thing) documenting the author‘s experience of depression. There are dragons. There is darkness. There are trite unhelpful comments (‘chin up!‘) But eventually something shifts.
Brilliantly done with very few words. And gorgeous to boot. #BBRC

BookwormAHN Nice, I'll have to look for that one. 5y

Time to catch up with some #BBRC #PictureBooksAtoZ posts.

My brother and his gf are expecting v soon, so I‘m using this challenge to start a shopping list. This is at the Very Top of the list - it‘s wonderful! Fun, simple, clear, interactive and (did I mention?) fun. This is one of those books I‘d been waiting for an excuse to track down - totally need to borrow a toddler to read it with now!

BookwormAHN I may need to get my niece this one. 5y
LapReader Every kid I‘ve ever read it to loves it. 5y
rockpools @BookwormAHN 😊 How old is she? Sorry I‘ve been AWOL all summer - back on it now! 5y

tournevis @RachelO My favourites of his are the puntastical Trulututu books, which I think were never translated. If they were, run, don't walk! 5y
rockpools @tournevis 🏃🏻‍♀️🏃🏻‍♀️🏃🏻‍♀️ Looks like you can probably get them in Polish, which might not help. 😕 5y
tournevis @RachelO I just saw that 10 fois 10 was translated (10 times 10) and my son loved that one too. 5y

Mr. Maxwell's Mouse | Frank Asch
post image
Pickpick

Me. Maxwell prepares to dine on his favorite dish, live mouse, but is drawn into a conversation with his meal. The mouse cleverly outwits the cat with rather painful results. A bit wordy for a picture book, I end up skipping quite a few sentences, but great illustrations and an impactful ending. #bbrc #picturebooksatoz

LibrarianJen I love the pictures in this one 5y

Little Bird | Germano Zullo

My children and I adore this book and I loved reading it to my daughter tonight. It has very few words and the story is told primarily through the illustrations. A man releases birds into the air but one is left behind. He forms a friendship with the bird and works to teach it to fly and the ending is so touching. “There are no greater treasures than the little things...one is enough to change the world.” #bbrc #picturebooksatoz

The Kissing Hand | Audrey Penn

A sweet story about a mother and child preparing for the child‘s first day of school. A comforting read to show a child that her mom‘s love goes with her child even when she cannot be there and the child‘s love is with the mom. My son loved this one when he started pre-K and his teacher read it to the class. Read it to my daughter last night as we get ready for pre-k to start on Tuesday. #bbrc #picturebooksatoz
