Pickpick

Almost the entire Irish village of Baltimore was taken captive by pirates in the early 1600s and sold as slaves in #Algeria. With little records about their lives as slaves, the author relies on a number of accounts by other slaves to try to describe what their lives could have been like. The author also posits a hypothesis that the taking was an elaborate plan of an evil mastermind who wanted to rid the coastal town of its inhabitants for his ⬇️

Texreader own reasons—and the hypothesis seems to make sense! I had heard about this historical event but I‘d never realized how many “northerners” from England, Iceland, etc were captured as slaves by Barbary pirates and not just sailors from captured boats, but hundreds of women and children. I also learned how the women may have had a better life as slaves than in the cold northern climes. Islam treated women more equally! A very interesting read for ⬇️ 2w

Mehso-so

It has some interesting material on the society created in a part of Madagascar by European pirates and Malagasy natives. The local population had a lot of mixture of which the pirates were the latest. However, it suffers from a lack of sources and flaws within them. However it reads like an incomplete essay and relies on a great deal of surmise. The author sets out a proposition which he is ultimately unable to sustain.

Bailedbailed

I know this is non-fiction, so I wasn't expecting something like Pirates of the Caribbean. However, why is a book about pirates this boring? Plenty of people, places and dates, but not much to hold the readers attention. Picking audio for this was a mistake also, the narrator adds nothing to the story, just a dry reading of the words on the page. Bailing at 40%. #hailthebail

Aims42 I always love and appreciate when a nonfiction book grabs my attention and keeps it! It‘s not an easy thing to do ☹️ Hopefully your next book is a pick 👍 6mo

This is without a doubt my favorite Penguin Classics cover of all time. The interior covers pirates from Francis Drake through Jean Laffite. New to me are the reports of 19th-century ships attacked by pirates. Everything is taken from source documents. Whether you are the least bit curious about pirates or you're a longtime fan, this one is one of the best out there.
