Finished, finally! 😓

Good information and thoroughly well researched. But it read like an extra long essay with just fact after fact. A couple times Bowler threw in anecdotes from her research like when she attended church services or a Holy Land tour. These were refreshing and I think the book would have been more engaging for casual readers like me if more anecdotal writing was included.

Drinking coffee and trying to get through another chapter of Blessed. While I am enjoying a lot of the information in this book, it is very very tedious. No question that Bowler spent a lot of time researching this topic but for a casual reader like me it‘s a little too much in depth. 😓 Sticking with it though to get to her info about present day prosperity teachers.

Sunraven I know that feeling ... So much nonfiction has done that for me in the past. It doesn‘t even have to be excessively tedious, it just has to not be interestingly written ... 😆 You can doo iiiiit! 5y
underthebelljar @Sunraven Thank you for the encouragement! 😄 She‘s definitely passionate about her research subject but wow so many names of people and movements I can‘t keep track of! Lol 5y
Sunraven Often I end up taking notes on books like that just to shush the part of my brain that‘s like, “There‘s no way I‘m going to remember any of this and I doubt I‘ll want to read it a second time!” 😉 5y
underthebelljar @Sunraven Notes would help a lot! 5y

Strange coincidence... right after that post I get this email notification. Hmmm 🤔🤷🏻‍♀️

Readergrrl That is interesting. I am not a theologian but a friend of mine is. He says that the “prosperity gospel” is heresy. As I am not well versed in religious doctrine, so I don‘t feel qualified to pass judgement myself but it sure doesn‘t seem like what I remember from childhood Sunday school classes. 5y
underthebelljar @Readergrrl I‘m not a theologian either but from my layperson‘s understanding of Christianity and the teachings of Jesus, the prosperity gospel just doesn‘t fit.. it‘ll be interesting to learn how it started and even more interesting to learn how much of American Christianity it has influenced. 5y
Crazeedi @BookishJess @Readergrrl I'm with you both, we arent automatically rich and happy because we are Christians. The prosperity gospel deceives people into thinking their faith isnt strong enough or something. Very sad 5y
