Every Man Dies Alone | Hans Fallada
post image
Pickpick

Hans Fallada survived Nazi Germany, wrote a novel based on the story of Otto and Elise Hampel in 24 days, and then died before its publication. If that wasn‘t tragic enough, his depiction of the grinding away of morality, loyalty, and self-respect to leave a society immersed in fear and loathing is exceptional.

nanuska_153 I loved this book. It's called Alone in Berlin in Ireland, I wonder at the change of title 2w
Anna40 I love this book! 2w
Nebklvr @nanuska_153 I noticed that! It is a rerelease but it looks like it was originally published under this name in the U.S. I never understand this. 2w

Nebklvr @Anna40 I usually don‘t appreciate longer books but I am trying to catch up on books hanging out on my shelves. 2w
nanuska_153 @Nebklvr I've just checked the original title and it translates to "Everyone dies alone", maybe they thought in Europe we would be more freaked out by the thought of dying alone (?) (but not of living alone in Berlin xD) 2w
Nebklvr @nanuska_153 Now that is interesting. I wonder if there was a movie and they changed book title to match? Hmmm… Now I am even more intrigued as I don‘t think there is any group of people less willing to talk or think about death than Americans 2w
nanuska_153 @Nebklvr there's a movie with Emma Thompson and Brendan Gleeson! It's called Alone in Berlin but it was made in Europe. I wonder if it changed the name in the US 2w

Sophie Scholl and the White Rose | Jud Newborn, Annette Dumbach

Pickpick

This book tells the true story of 5 Munich university students, who set up an underground resistance movement against the Nazis, & their tragic fate.

This was all new to me as although I've read quite a bit about WWII, I'd never heard of the 'White Rose'. The story of their tragically short-lived efforts to establish a resistance movement against the Nazis is an important one, but I felt a bit short-changed with regards to the people themselves.

OutsmartYourShelf The book tells us about their actions & their ideals & that they all showed remarkable courage even when facing their deaths, but very little about them as individuals so the reader is always kept at a distance from the main subjects. I don't feel as if I know anything about Sophie or her brother, Hans, outside of the group. The researching of the events was well done though. 3.75🌟

The Book of Lost Names is a beautifully written tribute to quiet heroism. It is a story about the courage to defy, the strength to remember, and the quiet rebellion of a woman with a pen. Eva found a way to remember as well as save displaced children

Girl in the Blue Coat | Monica Hesse

Pickpick

I love historical fiction and am glad to find such a great read in the YA section! Reading through this novel I was hanging on every word wondering about this girl in the blue coat and how she disappeared. I‘d like to think that by reading these types of historical fiction, I will have an idea of what to do if I were in a similar situation. But, one can never know for sure what they would do in such rough and dangerous times.

I read and loved Looking For Jane. The debut novel by this same author. This is a brilliantly told story. The way this author weaves the two main characters together is nothing short of perfection.

I loved this line in this story:
““Audrey nodded warily. “Yes. My name is Audrey. Audrey James.““ It was just the perfect sentence at the time. I
