I loved this book! Pin is an 11yo Sikh girl living in Singapore dealing with the difficulties of being a scholarship kid at a private school. But this story is predominantly about Pin trying to figure out her mother, a woman with secrets who is looked down upon by the local Sikh community & who expresses her feelings predominantly through the food she cooks. This is a great book for foodies! The writing is beautiful ⬇️

Centique & Pin is so well drawn, I felt totally engaged in her perspective and the pages flew by. 6mo
Centique Shes much more famous for having written Erotic Stories for Punjabi Widows so i must get to that soon 6mo

I enjoyed this one, which I read for #readaroundtheworld #singapore.

Pin gauges her mother's mood from the food she cooks. When her dying grandmother comes to stay, & the food loses its joy & flavour, she starts to learn of family secrets. The build-up of the mother's story was almost unbearable, even tho you know what's to come. I didn't always believe Pin's voice as a 10-year-old, but the sense of place, food & so many prejudices was 👌.

This is about ten-year-old Pin (going on eleven) growing up Sikh in early 90s multicultural Singapore. It's a coming of age tale that has at its heart family secrets, relationships between women, sexism, religion, & tradition vs modernity, & the meaning of food. It highlights the life of a minority & the casual racism that's prevalent. A nostalgic read; it reminded me of the Malaysia I grew up in. Predictable towards the end, but moving & hopeful.

rockpools I need to post my review of this one - it made me want to visit Singapore! 7y
batsy @RachelO It's a great place to visit. And you should definitely stop by Malaysia, too 😀 7y

Bay leaves & sour sauces were signs of sophistication- Ma was inspiring me to leave the narrow hallways of this block of flats where neighbours eavesdropped & tripped over each others shoes. Cinnamon sticks were Ma's way of comforting me when she noticed a flaw in the way the world worked & she was softening the blow. The sharp tang of cumin added to any dish meant that Ma was bothered about something. There were many cumin dishes.

TrishB I‘m off to Singapore in a few weeks - work - but I‘ve never been before so new for me 😁 7y

Any one of these might be my #LastReadOfTheYear.

Reading Portrait of a Murderer with @Tamra (and anyone else who would like to join!) and I hope to start tomorrow. Kassandra and the Wolf is to complete my #LitsyAtoZ. The Christie is for #agathachristieclub and I hope to fit in Sugarbread for #readaroundtheworld Singapore since I skipped Syria. Will I actually be able to read all four? I will stay tuned to find out 😂😂

#AllTheBooksof2017

Tamra You have a full reading plate, what a nice thing to have! 7y
batsy @Tamra Yes, delicious anticipation 😆 But I'll probably be yelling at myself on the 30th for not getting through all of these 😂 7y
Tamra I just read the intro to Meredith. Check it out, very intriguing! 7y

batsy @Suet624 More of an industrious maker of pic collages. But actually following through with my plans... 🤔😂😂 7y
Suet624 Hahaha. 7y
batsy I just read the intro and a little bit of the beginning, @Tamra . Intriguing indeed! And the story reads a bit darker than I expected. 7y
Tamra @batsy oh yes! I‘m a little ways in and these are some messed up characters. But I‘m definitely into where it‘s going. I think this is NOT a cozy little mystery. 7y

Well. I want to like this book very badly. And, for the most part, I do. I think it's much better organized than Inheritance. There is a purposefulness (is that a word? hah) to the way the themes are explored. But I can't get over the way the word "Singapore" keeps appearing everywhere. On page 70 alone, it appears 5 times. It's reaaaaally bugging me. #singlit

GatheringBooks precisely my issue, but i promise it gets better. 8y

My #singlit read over the weekend. While the first part tried too hard to establish the sense of place (too many needless "this is singapore" references), the book gradually came into its own with a distinct, graceful voice that seems to have seen a lot and felt a great deal and painted beautifully here with a thoughtful revelation of emotions through meals painstakingly prepared to capture defiance, relief, euphoria. Hence, the sponge cake. :)

Chachic #bookanddessert shot! 👍 Adding this one to my wishlist. 8y
RealLifeReading I'm going to tag @magictoyshop in this one as she was reading 8y

magictoyshop @RealLifeReading this is on my tbr 😁 8y
GatheringBooks @RealLifeReading I heard that this one is even better than Inheritance which I have not yet read. @BookishMe I have no idea what the ticket books are! You're way ahead of me on that score. @magictoyshop how are you finding Inheritance, thus far? 8y
magictoyshop @GatheringBooks I think it's safe to say that I kind of hero-worship Jaswal because she writes about the Singaporean Sikh identity, which I've never encountered in print before and which resonates close to my own heart and sense of identity. So my praise is rather effusive... I liked it very , very much. 8y
GatheringBooks @magictoyshop very glad to hear that. now i must get myself a copy of Inheritance soonest. :) 8y
magictoyshop @GatheringBooks how about her deliciously titled "Erotic Stories for Punjabi Widows"? Can't wait to get my hands on that. Heard she's sold the movie rights, too! The excitement is real!! 8y
GatheringBooks @magictoyshop i kind of picked up on the hoopla too about movie rights etc. i will have to get that too! Jaswal moderated quite a number of sessions for the recently concluded singapore writers festival. she was a lovely moderator who allowed space for her speakers to share their thoughts. i also liked the format she used in all of the panel sessions she moderated. thoughtful and considerate and structured. #readjanuary day 29: #foodiefiction
I don't really own much foodie fiction although I've definitely read some. Delicious! is probably the only book here that really counts as foodie fiction. Sugarbread is more of a coming-of-age story that happens to have tantalizing descriptions of Singapore food. The title story of Simple Recipes is about food but I don't think the rest are!
Other faves of mine include 👇

Sharpeipup Bought it at an airport. Loved it and loaned it to a friend who gave it away. Haven't been able to find it since... 8y

#readjanuary day 13: #setinmycity

As some of you might know, I'm from Singapore (which the gorgeous Sugarbread is set in). For the past seven years I've been living in the San Francisco Bay Area (Mr Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore) and a little before that, I got to live for a year in the beautiful coastal town (and party town) of Brighton! What about you? Where have you lived and which books are set there?

Tonton Tokyo: David Peace's Tokyo Year Zero; New Jersey: Freaks Amour by Tom DeHaven set in Jersey City; Manhattan: too many to list! And I've been to Jamaica so A Brief History of Seven Killings; LA: White Jazz James Ellroy 8y
EricQiao Stockholm: Girl with the Dragon Tattoo 8y
GlitteryOtters Oh man, if I had to include a book for every place I've lived, I would be posting allllll day long (I've lived in something like 18 different cities. I picked the town I live in now, as I have lived there the longest!) 8y

GatheringBooks sugarbread is one of our book club picks this year. do you also have the inheritance? 8y
BkClubCare I have NO idea about books set in places I've lived. Either I've lived in boring places or I don't remember settings? 8y
Chachic I've been in Singapore for the past four years or so for work but I'm from Manila, Philippines so I featured books from home.😊 I should look up Sugarbread, I haven't found a book set in Singapore that I've enjoyed. 8y

#seasonsreadings2016 day 7: #setonanisland

Singapore is an island, a small dot on the world map near the equator which holds a ridiculous number of people. Some days like this one, a quiet night in the Northern California suburbs, I miss the bustling city that never really sleeps. I miss the people, my family and friends, and all that crazy delicious food. 🇸🇬

Cinfhen I can relate to the feeling of missing home, people, places, familiarity and belonging. It's part of what defines and completes oneself. Which does not mean you are not grateful for the new life and new home you have made 💗💗💗 8y
Marchpane I love Singapore! Especially the Gardens by the Bay and being able to order Milo everywhere 😂 Milo on toast? Yes please! 8y
HKGirl I grew up in Hong Kong and I often feel the same way! I'd love to have the chance to visit Singapore someday. 8y

Sorry I'm so late with this #booktober post today which is #wishicouldbethere. I love how books can transport you anywhere! Right now I wouldn't mind being back home in Singapore, at my parents' house eating all that delicious food (like the mee siam pictured here, rice vermicelli in a spicy gravy with all those toppings to the left). For now I'll have to be content w rereading bits of Sugarbread although that may make me feel more homesick! 😂
