Where the Wild Things Are is fifty years old! This Caldecott Medal-winning picture book has become one of the most best loved children‘s books of all time! Feeling miss-understood at home and school, Max ventures out to the land of Wild Things. I would use this RF for a LC. Also there was a movie made back in 2009.

Cinderella | Marcia Brown

Earning Marcia Brown the Caldecott Medal, Cinderella is a piece of traditional literature (TL) that has captured the love of children everywhere! Even in rags, Cinderella is a hundred times more beautiful than her cruel stepsister. She is blessed with a fairy godmother who turns her sad night into something magical. This book would be great for a storytelling (S) to capture the attention of the students.
#UCFLAE3414SP20

LeahH UDL: optimize relevance, value and authenticity (7.2)- this a great time to talk with the students about all the old traditional literature and show them how valuable they are. EL: #4 link lesson topics to students prior knowledge- as the EL students if they have been to Disney, which princess in there favorite, etc. 4y

George Washington | Augusta Stevenson

Pickpick

This book is great to incorporate with literature and history at the same time! Students always know that Washington was our first president, but what else do they know. With this biography (B) they can definitely find out who George Washington really was. Also, I would use this book to incorporate choral reading (CR) to monitor reading from students and to make sure they are paying attention.
#UCFLAE3414SP20

LeahH UDL: build fluencies with graduated levels of support for practice and performance (5.3)- because I used this book for a CR, it‘s a great way to practice fluency with the other peers around you. EL: #28 ‘provide biographies of significant men and women from different countries- important to know how important people in history 4y

Don Freeman‘s classic character, Corduroy, in which a bear leaves the safety of his department store shelf in order to do almost anything to be adopted by a little girl. This RF fiction book would be great for a LC to discuss the adventures on Corduroy.
#UCFLAE3414SP20

LeahH UDL: promote expectations and beliefs that optimize motivation (9.1)- have the kids use their imagination to put themselves in the bears shoes. EL: #13- ‘use preview and review activities‘. The class could make their own Corduroy adventure either before or after they read the book. 4y

National best seller in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, USA Today and Publishers Weekly, is a story about a child who one day discovers he has an idea. This realistic fiction (RF) addresses many intriguing philosophical questions. I would use this book as a read aloud (RA) to get questions string within the classroom. Also this book is a Gold medal winner of the Independent Publishers Award an Washington State Book Award
#UCFLAE3414SP20

LeahH UDL: active or supply background knowledge (3.1) - state the premise of the book by saying that the young boy has ideas and get the kids to talk about ideas they have had. EL: #4 link lesson topic to students‘ prior knowledge- ask about if students have had ideas and to share 4y

Tabitha_H I love this book ! Teachingbooks.net is an awesome resource. The UDL principle 3.1 is a perfect choice for this book. Getting student to understand that the can also have idea and implement them is important. 4y

Where would we be without them- those special people who inspire us, support us and encourage us? This realistic fiction (RF) book reminds up that we need to celebrate those mentors we have/had in our lives and to thank them for the difference they have made. I would use this book for an LC and to ask students who is a mentor in their life.
#UCFLAE3414SP20

LeahH UDL: develop self-assessment and reflection (9.3) - This will allow students to self-assess and reflect on their live and think of people who have meant a lot to them. 4y
LeahH EL: #10- teach think, pair, share strategies in cooperative groups. - This is a great way for students to interact with one another and share with their neighbor about someone who is important to them. 4y
LeahH For this book I don‘t have a high quality website resource, but an activity that could take place in the classroom, is that in the front of the book it says ‘Thank you for being my Teacher.‘ I thought the kids could write a letter to the mentor in their live thanking them. 4y
DrSpalding If you go to the scholastic site or you look at read write think, you can find good resources that align with your teaching strategy. Looking at the front cover, this is not realistic fiction. What genre would it be? 4y

Pickpick

Winner of the 1963 Newbery Medal, A Wrinkle in Time (SF) is about a strange visitor who comes to the Murry house and embarks on a dangerous yet extraordinary adventure with the characters. This book would be a great project to do an author study (AS) about and once the class has read the book then they could watch the movie.
#UCFLAE3414SP20

LeahH UDL: use multiple media for communication (5.1)- by showing the movie after the students have read the book, this is a great way for communication and visualization so they can see how other portray the characters and setting. 4y
LeahH EL: #36- ask numerous questions which require higher level thinking responses. - I remember reading this book in 6th grade and it was hard to understand at times. By asking questions and discussing the content, it would help EL students understand. 4y

Number the Stars | Lois Lowry
post image

This book by Lois Lowry is about German troops trying to “relocate” all Jews of Denmark. Readers get to look at this HF book through the eyes of Annemarie Johansen. Winning the Newbery medal, this book is great for independent reading (IR) for the students to do on their own time and once back in class the class can discuss.
#UCFLAE3414SP20

LeahH UDL: enhance capacity for monitoring progress (6.4)- because the book could be used as an IR, the teacher needs to check in to make sure students are keeping up with their assigned reading. 4y
LeahH EL: #6 continually monitor students‘ comprehension - because some students could be EL, this book might be challenging for them to understand, so it‘s crucial for the teacher to check in with their progress and comprehension. 4y

Bemelmans was awarded the Caldecott Medal for his classic story of Madeline. This poetry (P) book talks about Madeline the smallest yet bravest girl of them all. Madeline is rushed to the hospital and the other 11 girls parade her with gifts so she can recover. This book is great for a RA and to have students share a time when they were brave!
#UCFLAE3414SP20

UDL: 2.2 ‘clarify syntax and structure‘ students pay attention to the rhyming words

LeahH EL: 13 ‘use preview and review activities‘ teachers need to show EL students rhyming words and do some activities so they understand when reading. 4y
LeahH http://www.readwritethink.org/parent-afterschool-resources/activities-projects/r... “construct-a-word” is the technique teachers can use to help children get familiar with rhyming words 4y

This Newbery Medal-winning biography captures the warm, appealing and humorous life of one of our presidents, Abraham Lincoln. Nonfiction biography (NF) books are great for students so they can understand the history, but it also captures their attention because the story is about someone! I think this book would be great for a guided reading (GR) so teachers and students can stop and talk about major events in history.

#UCFLAE3414SP20

LeahH UDL: 6.3 ‘facilitate managing information and resources‘ Teachers can use other info and resources to help talk about and show major historical events that took place in the Lincoln book. 4y
LeahH EL: 15 ‘reinforce the key ideas you present again and again‘ Teachers can point out VERY important events and dates that could be rest questions to students who need extra guidance 4y
