The One and Only Ivan | Katherine Applegate

I was in tears throughout this book. This MF novel won the Newbery Award. An effective book in teaching about the complex relationship between humans and animals. I would love to have my students do an AS on Katherine Applegate and compare/contrast her books with her life. I have attached a link that provides mini STEM lessons that utilizes the novel stemread.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/One-and-Only-Ivan-ISML.pdf UDL 9.1 & 8.3, ESOL 17 & 30

DrSpalding Be sure to expand on your universal design and English learner strategies to show how they complement the website resource you selected. I can‘t wait for this book to come to the big screen! 4y

This HF graphic novel won the Young Readers Choice Awards. This book would be great to have in the classroom for IR. But here is a lesson plan how a teacher utilized GR methods in her classroom. gateway.warsawschools.org/staff/forms/academics/guided-reading-lesson-plans-1/level-p-1/3405-i-survived-the-sinking-of-the-titanic-1912-level-p/file UDL 3.1, ESOL 17 and 5 #ucflae3414sp20

Ryan_R Love the graphic novel! 4y
DrSpalding Remember that you must include a brief summary to show that you read the book. This graphic novel version is so enticing! I am adding this to my stack. I love all things related to the Titanic! 4y

I wouldn‘t RA all the poems to the class. I would recommend this book as an IR if a student is interested in the book. But there are a few poems that could be beneficial in the classroom that could teach about migration, diversity, and cultural traditions. laii.unm.edu/info/k-12-educators/assets/documents/literature-guides/they-call-me-guero.pdf

DrSpalding This is considered realistic fiction, not fantasy. Make sure you include a summary based on your reading of the book. This author is an excellent one to include in your classroom library! (edited) 4y

DrSpalding Very brief. Be sure you consult the rubric. 4y

This TL opens the door for children to explore different cultures and connect them with their own culture. This lesson plan focuses on investigating the main idea and using evidence from the book to support their thinking. rif.org/sites/default/files/Support_Materials/RIF_ExploringDifferentCultures_ActivityGuide_3-5.pdf Children should be pre- taught a little bit about this culture and introduced to the new words in the text (UDL 3.1, 3.2, ESOL 5)

This NF book written by Mike Lowery is perfect way to integrate subjects. The book is perfect for IR or even GR. There are scientific words that should be pre-taught before students read this book. The graphics are great for ELL. This book could be used to teach students about note taking (UDL 6.3). By teachers monitoring ELLs note taking skills, teachers are able to monitor comprehension (ESOL 6). #ucflae3414sp20

A MF book written by Katherine Applegate won the Young Hoosie Book Award and 2nd place for the Intermediate Book Cybils Award. This book would be beneficial in the exploration of different cultures. rif.org/literacy-central/book/crenshaw. For some kids, their family culture is all they know. They may not notice the poor in the community. It‘d be best to use this book as a RA. UDL 2.2 and the use of graphic organizers (ESOL 7) #ucflae3414sp20

DrSpalding Keep this book as my gift to you! This is a lovely story that has a serious message. The way the topic of homelessness is expressed in this book is age-appropriate for elementary students. 4y

victoriamaria Umm.. hi, can you say goose bumps? This poem- book won the Caldecott Medal. It speaks motivation to African- Americans in the United States. It highlights the civil rights movements, trauma of slavery, and the perseverance of great heroes. This book is a great way to optimize motivation (UDL 9.1). For ELL learners, there are some big words mentioned in the book (audacious, underdogs..), it‘d be better to teach these words using (1/2) 4y
victoriamaria vocabulary cards before reading (ESOL Comp- Strat 5). #ucflae3414sp20 (edited) 4y
deiacovab Wow I‘ve been seeing this book everywhere and it looks fantastic. Your photo looks great and I like the idea of introducing vocabulary words before reading 4y

victoriamaria This fiction book won Newberry Medal, a Coretta Scott King Illustrator Honor, and a Caldecott Honor. The book follows CJ and Nana as they travel on a bus as they travel to their last stop, a soup kitchen. CJ makes small complaints through out the book but Nana replies kindly to each of his complaints with wisdom and insight. The opening page of the book included symbols that can be identified through out the story. This book can be used to (1/2) 4y

This nonfiction takes the reader through a mini walk of Martin Luther King, Jr.‘s life. Starting from when he was a little boy and was able to identify and read “white only signs” to when he traveled to Memphis, Tennessee, to help the garbage collectors on strike and was shot and died. The book focuses on the “big words” he used to help change the world and how he used love to fight hate. (1/3) #ucflae3414sp20 #butwaittheresmoretoread
