Dubliners: And Chamber Music | James Joyce

Taking the audiobook of this for a spin with my tea this morning. It seems fitting, since I saw the surname “Joyce” last night in the other book I‘m reading.

JazzFeathers I started Dubliners a couple of years ago and haven't finished yet. Not because l don't like it. I think Joyce is a genius od words and storytelling. But his stories are riddles and l'm not sure l have the key to those riddles yet. 5y

GingerAntics @JazzFeathers I find stories like that just take multiple readings and a little research. I‘m really enjoying them, other than being a little weirded out by the old guy in the second one. @TheReadingMermaid I‘ve never read him before, so I‘m excited to have nice little digestible pieces of his writing to start with. 5y

The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood | Howard Pyle

1.5-2🌟 First, let me say that I really like Robin Hood stories. I like the legend and I like the idea of humanitarianism. It is from these stories that I first came to believe that the wealth of a nation should be the wealth of the entire nation not just the select few. However, I was not a great fan of this particular telling of it. Pyle talks to the reader as if they are both travelling with Robin or spying on him. (cont‘d below)

GingerAntics Not sure this is really for children with the length of the chapters, but perhaps this is something that has changed since this book was originally written in 1883. The language is very formal and antiquated for modern readers. The approach to the story telling is also very dry. I had to push through the vast majority of this book. I would have preferred a more modern telling of the Robin Hood tales. 19th century English is just so harsh to me. 5y

GingerAntics It was equally interesting and annoying to see how Pyle used this legend to further Christian religious teachings and social expectations of piety. Clearly people in this period were not concerned with misappropriation. Never mind how disturbing it was that Pyle suggested that being hit hard enough would wipe out one‘s sins. 🙄 There are also way too many songs that are way too long in this telling. 5y

GingerAntics Perhaps they aren‘t so daunting in writing, but in the audiobook there were songs that went on for 10 full minutes, sung in a monotonous tune by the narrator, Christopher Cazenore. It was painful, and if I‘m honest I skipped passed any song that went beyond a few repeated melody lines. I actually found that I could hit the “15 secsonds ahead” button, sometimes multiple times, and still didn‘t miss anything or get lost. (edited) 5y

GingerAntics Too wordy in so many places, but the few place where I wanted more words, there were surprisingly few words to be had. It was skipping from chapter to chapter. This is a great legend turned into 19th century tripe. This may be an unpopular opinion, but I‘ve read better versions that were older than this. I had to force myself to finish the whole thing.

Gulliver's Travels (Revised) | Jonathan Swift

I was a strange child. Apparently I greatly loved this story...I am quite frankly borde by it, now. I like other of Swift's works so much more. This just seems to go on and on. Not sure if I'm going to get through it before its due. With the wait list I can't renew it, either.

GingerAntics A Modest Proposal was great. It was oddly funny and oddly still completely poignant. Admittedly, I have a bit of a twisted sense of humor so that may have had something to do with that assessment. What was not funny was when I had a student who didn't get that it was snark and claimed in a paper that Jonathan Swift believed Irish children should be eaten, actually ate them, and would not be persuaded from this view. Now THAT is twisted.

BookishBelle I also enjoyed A Modest Proposal much more than Gulliver‘s Travels. I read them both in undergrad. Can‘t remember if I actually finished Gulliver‘s Travels... I think I did. I was much more strict with myself about such things back then. Now I‘ll just bail. 5y

GingerAntics @BookishBelle that's interesting, because I find myself more strict about finishing now than I used to be. lol I think I generally skim when bored just to say I finished. lol That may end up happen with theserial reader, but at least I tried. 🤷🏼‍♀️ (edited) 5y

This was read to me long ago, but I don't remeber it. I remeber watching a TV movie version of it when I was quite young. So excited to listen to this classic story once again.

Faibka I mentioned elsewhere that audiobooks don‘t seem to work for me, but after reading your review I might give this one a try :) I also want to get the audio of Jo Nesbø‘s Macbeth narrated by Euan Norton, just to listen to that fine Scottish accent! ?? (edited) 6y

This is a great book. It‘s moving right along. It‘s a great little adventure story. It was hard getting going at first because I was so annoyed at Middlemarch, but it‘s won me over easily. So glad I got on the waitlist for this one.

Who are these characters? We just randomly switch characters to the point that I don‘t care about any of them. I can‘t imagine doing this for another 22 hours. It‘s just not worth it. I have so many other books to read that aren‘t as annoying. It‘s a bunch of women concerned with being womanly and men being manly. It‘s prattling twaddle. I just don‘t have the will to continue this. I don‘t get the charm or appeal of this book. I‘m so sorry.

jmofo @GingerAntics I used to be more forgiving of myself when I bailed on books. Since I started using Goodreads, I have been reluctant to put a book down once I have started it. The reading goal thing was cool but since I‘ve joined Listy, I prefer the hours read readathons over books finished rubric. 6y

GingerAntics @jmofo I did the book a week Challenge this year, but I want to do something else next year. I like the idea of making it about quality time instead of speeding through books to stack up the numbers. I would never give up on a book until this year. I‘m a perfectionist so not finishing something I‘ve started drives me nuts. (edited) 6y
