Rainy day reading with Jade, who‘s sad she can‘t play fetch outside. (Basement fetch just isn‘t the same.) I‘m flying through A CLASH OF STEEL, despite occasional purple prose and some unnecessary uses of the past perfect. (Y‘all know how much I hate that.) The setting‘s great, I‘m intrigued by the characters, and I can‘t wait to see the plot kick into gear.

I‘m staying near a library branch with a puzzle exchange! Today I dropped two off and picked one up—and since they also had a great queer history display, I came away with a few books to boot. I‘m especially excited for A CLASH OF STEEL, since I loved the two previous remixed classics I read.

Oxen and wain-ropes would not bring me back again to that accursed island; and the worst dreams that ever I have are when I hear the surf booming about its coasts, or start upright in bed, with the sharp voice of Captain Flint still ringing in my ears: ‘Pieces of eight! pieces of eight!'

Pretty good semi-humorous story of a twenty-something girl with a dysfunctional family and an obsession with the book, Treasure Island. Parts are kind of gritty for a funny book, but I mostly liked it.

Could not resist starting ANOTHER book that looked appealing. I like the idea of it.

Take Treasure Island and set it in china, make the main character a strong teen who just wants to be her own person already, and add a famous Chinese pirate and you have a fun read! I love classic retellings. I don't love historical fiction, but this one mostly kept my attention (I zoned out quite a few times and had to rewind, but that's more of a me problem than the book's). #Retelling #Pirates #TreasureIsland #LGBTQIA

Xiang only has a golden pendant left from her father. When she discovers the pendant actually holds clues to the fabled lost treasure of Zheng Yi Sao, she discovers what she is truly capable of.

This had a rather slow start, but once the story got going, it really got going. I loved the historical Chinese setting, Xiang was a charming MC, and the romance was very sweet. It had found family, pirates, adventure, and surprise twists! 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌗

This was outrageously hilarious but also pretty disturbing. A character study of a young woman who‘s had a break with reality and uses Robert Louis Stevenson‘s “Treasure Island” as a guidebook for her life which has gone off the rails. There‘s even a parrot. She‘s terrible to her parents, but especially awful to her sister, who all try to help her. I don‘t know what the lesson is here but I do know I enjoyed the ride. #BlameItOnTheKidUpstairs

TheBookgeekFrau This sounds similar to Chris Bohjalian's The Double Bind, except it was The Great Gatsby instead of Treasure Island. 2y
Ruthiella I just read this too due to @TheKidUpstairs ! 😂 At first the protagonist so awful, I didn‘t get the humor but eventually I enjoyed it. 2y
TheKidUpstairs 🤣🤣🤣 I love your hashtag and your review. I kind of loved that there wasn't really a lesson learned, it was just an over the top portrait of a completely self absorbed woman. She didn't really learn and grow, and that was part of the enjoyment for me. 2y
