This ibook s fascinating. The female main character is a scientist in the 2000s with Asperger‘s, so her parts of the story describe how she approaches the world so differently. For example, when she entered a room she only looked at the people‘s feet because faces are too chaotic for her to handle. I find her story so compelling. I‘m not quite into the 1899 part of the story yet but I‘m thinking the male MC may have a mild form of “aspies.” ⬇️

New IRL bookclub is a fabulous group of smart & funny people. I am really looking forward to future book dissections, I mean discussions.

I “enjoyed” Conrad‘s novella for what it is/was in its time. The literary criticism from various writers included added food for thought. I argued with them via pencil. 😆

Amiable Your book club sounds like perfection. 😍 3mo

Lcsmcat I got so much more out of this reading it as an adult with a book club than I did in high school. We paired it with The Poisonwood Bible, which is a sort of retelling. 3mo
Cathythoughts Oh that‘s great about the new bookclub! Exciting ! 3mo

Ooofta - this little piece is slow going for all that‘s packed into it. I can only read a few pages at a time to absorb it.

Scochrane26 Had to read this in high school, don‘t remember much about it, except I hated it. 3mo
Ruthiella It is sooo slow. The conceit that this is a story that Marlow is telling over brandy and cigars is ridiculous! He would be talking for 20 hours! 🤣 3mo
Texreader Yea not an easy read 3mo

Tamra @Scochrane26 like so many other assigned HS reading projects, it makes no sense for young people. I wouldn‘t have had the intellectual prowess. 3mo
Tamra @Ruthiella bahahaha yes! 3mo
Tamra @Texreader This edition has essays by other writers on it so I‘m curious to see what they have to say. 3mo

I caught a cold 😒, but I‘m thankful it was after the festivities. It‘s nap/reading time and this classic has been on my TBR forever. The impetus is a new bookclub starting up in January.

jewright I hope you feel better. I hate how winter always brings illness. 4mo

I love Kingsolver. She‘s a master with words. The story is so incredibly hard to read as so many of her books are, but it‘s only because of the rawness of her writing.

It disturbs me that we as a human race can be so cruel towards each other.

At a later stage I will re-read this book, in a more enlightened frame of mind. Because this time around I was not ready for harsh topics so blatantly stated.

I can see why this is seen as a Modernist masterpiece
