5🌟 Absolutely adored this book. This addressed many of the questions I had about this story, as well as pointing out a few I have no idea how I missed. I great combination of history, theology, mythology and art. My only caveat for this book is IF YOU BELIEVE THE STORY OF ADAM AND EVE IS LITERALLY TRUE, DO NOT READ THIS BOOK, IT WILL OFFEND YOU.

GingerAntics The wonderful conversations started by this book here on Litsy made this book totally worth the read on their own. The wonderful nature of the book was just amazing cake to go with the great conversation icing. Can‘t wait for the what the next Greenblatt book brings. 6y
MrBook Great review! 6y
Weaponxgirl I have been searching for this book inspired by some conversations 6y

GingerAntics @Weaponxgirl any of ours? lol 6y
Weaponxgirl @GingerAntics maybe 😉 I read books mostly by women but have eased up just a tiny bit this year and this sounds like my kinda thing 6y
GingerAntics @Weaponxgirl I completely recommend it. Just sayin. In case you didn‘t know before. 😏 6y
Ericalambbrown Oh, I need to read this one! Sounds fantastic! 6y
GingerAntics @Ericalambbrown it was great. It read well at a nice clip, even though it was full of info. The art section was great fun, too. My reading slowed down as I looked up each image, only to find there was a section of all the images mentioned, in the back of the book. 🤷🏼‍♀️ Oh well. 😂 I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. (Or at least close, I really really quite enjoyed it) 6y
Ericalambbrown @GingerAntics Thanks! I‘m certainly going to have to get a hold of it 😊 6y

This is probably the most true statement I‘ve ever heard. Seeing that this story has been used to justify sexism, racism, anti-semitism, all sorts of violences against humanity in general, this statement couldn‘t be truer.

Weaponxgirl I‘ve had my eye on this, thought it might interest you 6y
GingerAntics @Weaponxgirl I‘ll give it a shot. I hope she makes the destination between the pistic and gnostic Christians, because the pistic were the crazy violent ones (and the ones that eventually took over the entire movement), while the gnostic ones were the peaceful ones that got shut out. 6y
Weaponxgirl I haven‘t read it yet, it just caught my eye when I was looking for history books by women. And believe it or not I went to bed and now my insomnia is in full swing and looks like I‘m up for the day 6y

GingerAntics @Weaponxgirl aww that sucks. I‘m so sorry. I hope Litsy wasn‘t part of the problem. 6y
GingerAntics @Weaponxgirl I guess we‘ll find out. I‘m officially on the waiting list for it at the library. It‘ll be able 4 weeks. Hopefully that will give me time to clear out everything that‘s just come in this week. 6y
Weaponxgirl @GingerAntics nope, it‘s a combination of doing nights and my brain doesn‘t like to shut off ever. I‘m someone who has super vivid dreams and sometimes sleep paralysis so at times I will wake up exhausted even when I‘ve had a lot of sleep. 6y
GingerAntics @Weaponxgirl at least mine stops at insomnia. Although, that sleeping for a good amount of time and then waking up exhausted does sound familiar. 6y
Weaponxgirl @GingerAntics you‘ll probably get to that book before me! I‘m excited to hear about it! 6y
GingerAntics @Weaponxgirl I‘ll definitely keep you posted. I had a plan for what was getting read this year, then holds I‘ve had for MONTHS finally started coming in. Now everything is off. lol 6y
Weaponxgirl @GingerAntics I do that all the time. I have finally learnt that I am terrible at sticking to even my own reading lists now. I just go with my mood and my best friends have to listen to what I‘m interested in at the time 6y
GingerAntics @Weaponxgirl lol that‘s why I don‘t like to restrict myself too much. I generally make master lists on a subject with the idea that I‘ll finish the list in a few years (but maybe not because books keep getting added). lol 6y
Weaponxgirl @GingerAntics that‘s exactly how I do it too! I thought I was the only one who had a hundred lists on certain topics but never finished just one. Mines in genres, topics the whole shebang and then I know I have a book available for whatever mood I might be in 6y

Next up for 2019, a book I recently discovered while trying to get my hands on a copy of another book by this author. I love this author, and I‘m already enamoured with it after reading the prologue.
#theriseandfallofadamandeve #stephengreenblatt

GingerAntics @Faibka not sure how you feel about this topic (it looks at this as a story people tel themselves to make sense of their existence), but it sounds really good so far. Can‘t wait for our readalong of 6y
Faibka Stacked! This sounds like it‘s right up my alley and adding to my ever growing Greenblatt collection. Yes, very excited to read his book on Hamlet :) 6y
GingerAntics @Faibka oh good. I‘m so glad I‘ve found someone else to enjoy him with. I hope you like it. Wait, you‘re not Jewish or Christian, are you? If you are, this one might not be for you. 6y

GingerAntics @Faibka I didn‘t ask that question right. You don‘t believe this story to be literally true, do you? I already know that my review is going to have to have that caveat in it. 6y
Faibka @GingerAntics Lol, no worries, I was just going to joke and say that it‘s more serious than that as I was raised Catholic 😂 I‘m afraid I‘m not well suited for most belief systems as my brain is hardwired to question everything 6y
Faibka And no, I don‘t think the story is true. I‘ve thought of it as an interesting metaphor: when we reach a certain level of maturity through knowledge and self-awareness we become grounded in reality and realize how alone and disconnected we are. The imaginative and innocent make believe world of a child is in a way a kind of paradise that shelters from pain and disappointment. But, many believed it and how many women have suffered because of it 6y
GingerAntics @Faibka oh my god, me too!!! I was raised Catholic and now I think I‘m nothing. I don‘t even know. I don‘t think anyone believed it was totally true way back when, but when we moved here to TX, it‘s HUGE down here that the entire bible is literal and people believe the planet is only 4K years old and it‘s crazy. I agree it‘s done major harm to women. This book is interesting in that you learn that‘s just the Christian interpretation of the story. 6y
Faibka @GingerAntics wait, you live in TX too?!! Which part? I‘m currently living in El Paso. We should get together! 😆 6y
GingerAntics @Faibka oh wow, you‘re in Texas? I‘m up near Dallas. I guess we‘re technically Dallas. We‘re right on the boarder, kind of the north east corner. I‘ve never been to El Paso. We‘ve been here 19 years next month, and the only place we‘ve been other than Dallas is San Antonio. 🤷🏼‍♀️ 6y
Faibka @GingerAntics Lol, I‘ve been to San Antonio only once and to Dallas only to the airport to change planes when flying up north, lol. Well, if you ever feel like visiting another border city, let me know! 6y
GingerAntics @Faibka yeah, I had to look it up. You‘re almost in New Mexico and right there on the Mexican boarder as well. You kind of forget how big Texas really is until you look at the map and how far apart these city centres really can be. 6y
