I enjoyed this inside view into the life of the mysterious Sally Hemings. She was kept a secret then, and she is still in the shadows of American History today. In these pages, we get a glimpse of what her life might have been like. She was Thomas Jefferson‘s misogynoir. She was an enslaved, Black woman. She was Sally Hemings.

Aimeesue We toured Monticello a few years ago when my daughter was looking at colleges. They had just started doing a tour centering the lives of the enslaved people who lived there. It was a humbling experience. My favorite part was when the tour guide ripped a tourist a new one for saying “But TJ was a GOOD slave owner, right?” No, dude, there were no “good” ones. 15h

This was an interesting look at a little-known chapter in US history.
The young USA was tired of getting harassed by pirates in the Mediterranean and were unwilling to pay tribute like other nations so they decided fighting them was the way to go.
I question some of the choices the author made with quotes from primary sources. Most seemed to be there just for “color” rather than adding any actual info.

On the cover of this book is a quote from NYT bestselling author, Mark Adams, which perfectly captures the essence of this book, “A very entertaining book about a very complicated man.” I thought I knew about founding father Thomas Jefferson, but no, no I did not. This was an extremely interesting and thought provoking read that found the perfect balance of presenting hard facts but never feeling stuffy.

This is the story of Martha (Patsy) Jefferson Randolph, Thomas Jeffersons daughter, told from her perspective, based on letters and original sources. It focuses mostly on Patsy's devotion and protection of her father. A very good historical fiction. (see below for the rest)
One more book in for #AwesomeApril thanks for hosting @Andrew65

Make a great day everyone 😊

bthegood A few things stand out - Patsy is a strong woman, especially for that time period; people could be cash poor but own land and slaves and be government officials; Jefferson comes off as weak and narcissistic throughout most of his dealings with his children and other people; while the Jeffersons were progressive in their views on slavery (feeling it should be abolished) they kept slaves for financial security throughout their lives. 11mo

There should be a trigger warning for characters who lose a parent and have to shove their grief aside to care for the remaining parent. It‘s a very specific trigger, but still powerful.

I believe Patsy's relationship with her father (Thomas Jefferson) is not healthy (even for those times)!! #ThemedThursday thanks for hosting and the tag @dabbe

A tough book to read and an even tougher book to discuss, Wiencek challenges his readers to consider Jefferson as a “totem” that guards American memory on the issue of slavery. A damning portrait of America‘s greatest hypocrite.
