The Husbands | Holly Gramazio

Pickpick

This was much more fun than expected.
Each time Lauren‘s husband enters the attic, there returns a new one. An seemingly endless supply of husbands is at hand for Lauren. She takes her time to ask herself what she wants from marriage, a man, and herself.
Holly Gramazio has written a very original story that made me laugh and think. #ToB24

mcctrish I was just surprised she didn‘t have one to start but now I get that she‘s in the market for one 🤣🤣 3mo
BarbaraBB @mcctrish That was quite surprising indeed, and she didn‘t even want one! 3mo
Suet624 What a great concept. 3mo
AlaMich I liked this too, and I thought she did the ending well, also. 3mo
robinb I really want to read this one! It sounds fun and thought provoking. 😊 Hope you‘re doing well! 🤗 3mo

A #tob24 title that I was really looking forward to bur I found the lack of cohesion in the story off putting. Some sections I liked, one section I skimmed, and it just never came together for me and overall I was disappointed.

Well, THIS has to be the shortest fastest ToB read I have ever experienced! I wish I would have known it would only take me one sitting; I would have devoured it at a bookshop and returned it to the shelf. LOL maybe not… #ToB24 #novella #LibraryBook [Book 15 of 2024] ⛰️🦁

Soft pick, entertaining in a way that fits my mood today.

AvidReader25 I just read this one too. I don‘t know why, but I‘ve read a string of books narrated by animals recently, but I didn‘t plan it that way. 🤣 8mo
BkClubCare @AvidReader25 - it‘s kind of fun when books have linked coinky-dinks… 8mo

I‘m a bit flummoxed by this one. I enjoyed it immensely but I also feel like it really doesn‘t hold together as a whole. Almost a third of the book is dedicated to a childhood story of the main character, Bob, and it‘s completely enchanting, but it doesn‘t fit into the rest of the book and even carry a consistent characterization of Bob. So I can‘t quite give it a pick. But it would be a great book club book and I want a whole book about Linus.

catiewithac I'm liking this for the dog 😍 9mo
Librariana It's lovely when we have those feelings about side characters... that they could've gotten their own book. Sounds like Linus was a well-rounded one! I always appreciate the way you share your opinions of a book 😊 9mo

squirrelbrain This didn‘t quite connect for me either - stories that could almost have been separate books. 9mo
Hooked_on_books @catiewithac I‘ll be honest—there are some posts that I struggle to read at all because I can‘t take my eyes off the dog! So, I get it. And appreciate it! 9mo
Hooked_on_books @Librariana Aw, thanks! I appreciate honesty in reviews from others so I can assess a book well, so that‘s what I try to do. Linus is an old guy in a wheelchair with absolutely no filter who will blaze right over the top of anyone if he lets them. He‘s a hoot! 9mo
Hooked_on_books @squirrelbrain That‘s it exactly! Great writing, great stories, but not a novel. It just felt like 2 different ideas smashed together that really didn‘t have anything to do with one another. 9mo

Call me impressed. Dazed, feeling melancholy. This is imaginative and creative without any sense of arrogance. Imho

I feel like there‘s a really excellent, moody, disturbing short story buried in this book. But as a novel, even a short one, it‘s a meandering mess. And yet it‘s a prize winner! Baffling. #tob24 longlist

Started this one yesterday #LitsyTob24 right? NOPE: #ToB24

BarbaraBB No it‘s not! It‘s a play-in book in the real #ToB24. I‘ll add a link to our shortlist! 9mo
squirrelbrain I listened to this - it‘s interesting but not overly exciting. 9mo

BkClubCare @BarbaraBB - ack! I can‘t ever find the lists! 😫 especially mid-post. 🫤 9mo
BkClubCare @BarbaraBB - I search the hashtag but it is pages and pages- how do you save the link for reference? I took a photo but that, too, is pages to track through… I have it printed “somewhere” 9mo
BkClubCare @squirrelbrain - at least, the audio is short. It is tough pressure to want to be a completist. I am working on it. 9mo
BkClubCare @BarbaraBB - thank you! 9mo
BarbaraBB Did you find it by clicking on the url I sent above it do you have to scroll a lot then too? Wait, I‘ll tag you in that post again! That should do the trick! 9mo
BkClubCare @BarbaraBB -yes! Went right to the brackets!! And, I have discovered a new way to org my open tabs for Safari on my phone. I‘m good. 👍 🎉 9mo

I‘m glad the #tob24 longlist got me to read this one, because it‘s a wild, hilarious, madcap caper starting with a bank robbery and carrying unending ridiculousness forward. There‘s lots of skewering of the political right and conspiracy theorists, which I enjoyed. I‘ll definitely be looking for this author again.

Deblovestoread Sounds fun! Stacked 9mo
BarbaraBB I loved earlier works by him but this one sounds completely different. That‘s why I‘ve been holding it off. Your reviews sounds good though. 9mo
Hooked_on_books @BarbaraBB That‘s really interesting to hear. I‘ve never read him before and thought other books might be similar. But of course that‘s not necessarily the case with any author. I like wacky books, so this one was fun for me. 9mo

BarbaraBB He wrote about the Vietnam war, so I guess much more serious. I loved 9mo
BarbaraBB I remember now that he wrote a funny book too but I didn‘t like ghat much. 9mo
Hooked_on_books @BarbaraBB Wow, those all seem wildly different from this book! If you do give it a try, I‘ll be curious to see what you think of it. 9mo
JenP I did like his book about Vietnam and the aftermath/toll the war had on those who served. I work with Veterans (I‘m a psychologist) and that book was brilliant in how it really captured “the things they carried”. This sounds very different 9mo
Hooked_on_books @JenP My husband has PTSD from Afghanistan, so I definitely need to read that one. 9mo

The Lost Journals of Sacajewea | Debra Magpie Earling
post image
Pickpick

Sacajewea is such a familiar character to Americans, as a helpmeet to the Lewis and Clark expedition. Here, the story of her likely true experience is told. She is firmly rooted within her culture, stolen away from her people amidst violence, then serially raped and treated as an object/tool. It is written in what I assume would be the style of her language, which makes it challenging. I appreciated it more than liked it. #tob24

Chelsea.Poole I started this and it‘s been languishing on my stack because it‘s not an easy read. Though, like you, I really appreciate the perspective, it‘s not an easy read — in form or content. (edited) 9mo

Larkken Oh man, I bet this would be good to read, and I'm sure I have been lying to myself in saying that I already know her story - but it's true that I know enough to be worried about how difficult it will be and I'm not looking forward to trying. Maybe your review will give me the necessary kick in the butt? 9mo
Crazeedi Man, I think I might have to look for this one, thanks for the review 9mo
