There's a spring of water in my neck of the wood, (or should I say desert?) that is said to permanently tie your mind and body to it if you were to drink from it. I try to explain why we can't leave here after years of disappointment and frustration, and why we always come back. Sometimes it's easier to believe in the fantastical. Or maybe fantasy's roots are deeply tied to reality.

12:34 am, way too late to stay up reading, but it's been a while since I was caught up in something so easy on the mind and eyes. I love when authors take a fantastic premise and make it so relatable: I'm having flashbacks of studying for my MBA and just. not. getting. it! Also feel the same with most books recently; thank you Justin Cronin for the worst book hangover of my adult years!

It's amazing what the trappings of modernity really hide. These buildings are essentially a reflection of the best and worst of humanity. A quick, short, gruesome read. The parallels to "The Lord of the Flies" were very appropriate. Despite the fact that it was bright and sunny, and I had the obligatory frozen coffee in hand, I couldn't help feeling both morbidly fascinated, horrified, stifled. I am now desperate for a lighter, airier read.

Can you bail on a book because you're terrified of the ending? How about if the characters are going through some kind of personal struggle that you can't deal with because of something difficult in your own life? Or maybe it's "book burnout", where the series you're reading has consumed your life for so long that you'll afraid it will end or end badly? Decisions, decisions. Maybe it's time for a break with lighter reading.

Halfway through. Had a terrible night worrying about friends in Nice, needed to take a day off for myself while the toddler played in the garden with her dad, and what better escape than a book? Thankful for the kindness of strangers, good dads and good books that remind us of our shared humanity.

I'm currently loving this book! The author has a way of delving into history that's relevant and intriguing without sacrificing the pace, but the Litsy app is becoming the bane of my existence! I have a serious case of fear-of-missing-out! I can't seem to read fast enough!

A beautiful summer day, in stark opposition to an emotionally fraught ending. Enjoyed the heart-pounding pace after a slow beginning, the wild and frightening journey, and a satisfying ending that leaves you wondering what's left to conclude in the final installment of the trilogy.

The benefits of daddy-daughter (and iPad) time: Sneaky reading. Only taken me a couple of weeks to get this far but the pounding pace of this book is making it impossible to put down. This one is less character-driven and more plot-driven but is just as compulsively readable.

Silently pleading with the toddler to nap while trying to squeeze in a few chapters. It's been frustratingly slow-going so far: new characters, timeline jump, and various lyrics of Twinkle, Twinkle which has now developed an appropriately ominous tone. Determined to slog through to the good bits!

This is what a life-ending apocalypse must feel like. Reading "The Passage" leaves you gasping for breath, wanting to put it down fearing for the characters that you empathize with, yet holding on until the very end. The scope is immense, yet remains personal and very human.

Happy Birthday to Eric Carle, beloved author of millions worldwide (our hot, dusty corner included)! Mister Seahorse is my daughter's favorite so far because "the daddies take care of the babies too"! Leave it to my toddler to turn a bedtime story into a treatise on equality and feminism!

My one birthday wish this year is to get some time away somewhere quiet and alone where I can make a dent in my TBR. This book is relentlessly unputdownable but so is my toddler, my writing class, my business plan, and my relationship with my husband. I don't want a spa retreat, just a hotel room.

Almost finished. Sleep is for the weak. I've spent an entire day walking around in a fugue state, similar to the descriptions in the book. I'm determined to finish this one tonight for the sake of my confused toddler and unamused husband. It's been a while since I've been so sucked into a book!

My husband (a health care professional) and I would always talk about what we would do in case of an undead apocalypse. We assume he's a goner because he would be on the front line of the panic and madness, which I'm most certain to be a part of. Epistolary fiction plays off that fear so well!

Absolutely blown away by how beautiful the illustrations are, including those arabesque designs and calligraphy that seem to be done by hand. The narrative is addictive and heartbreaking when confronted with the reality of today's world. Halfway mark but can't seem to pull myself away.

Hurray for good friends and pre-weekend book mail! I arrived home with a lovely little care package waiting at my doorstep. I wonder how they managed to pass our insightful censors? Let's just hope no one wants to peek into my little subversive library!

Haven't been so thoroughly sucked into a book in such a long time. This one grabbed me by the eyeballs, glowing iPhone screen and all, and has made my wait for bedtime even more anxious! 15% mark in record time after weasling myself out of a gathering of in-laws.
