This was an imaginative, gritty and wonderfully weird sci-fi that was full of cool ideas, but I can‘t say I enjoyed it. I loved the all-female world, the unreliable narrators, the quest through different levels… but the biotech was all a bit too icky for me. The blood and sclera and teeth and afterbirth 🤢 I spent a lot of time grossed out. Cool concept, but too visceral for me! #bookspinbingo @TheAromaofBooks

When the whole book passes the Bechdel test 💕 Lesbians in space and really well-written, involved characters. Sometimes the prose lapsed into super cliche 'quotable' lines, but for the most part it was incredible.

I ended up really enjoying this book but for reasons that might not fly for everyone. Hurley is excellent at worldbuilding, and the unexpected use of a biopunk setting rife with body horror was visceral, gross and I LOVED it. unfortunately her stellar worldbuilding comes at the behest of characterization. I also felt this book needed to really slow down in order to establish the scale of conflict properly. a fun and unique read, but very flawed.

Well ultimately this #sciencefiction novel was disappointing. I appreciate the very unique world-building and the fact that casually all the characters are (queer) women, but in the end I just didn't enjoy this very much? You're kept in the dark for 9/10ths of the book with this character who lost her memory and by the time you find out the twist, it was too late for me to care. I also never connected with any of the characters. #QueerBooks

For my entry into the #Hr6SFFchallenge in the #24in48 #readathon I‘ve pulled just a fraction of the SciFi books on my shelves. SciFi was my first #genrelove when I found Anne McCaffrey & Piers Anthony on the library shelves. Then it was the classics, but the new SciFi coming through is just as fantastic & sometimes a little bit twisted. And weird. Like the tagged book, about an all female race living on an organic ship that are recycled for parts!

Queer space opera and bisexual necromancy in YA. Can't wait to read them! Whitey also really liked the store because a staff member gave her a dog treat. #DogsOfLitsy

Absolutely fantastic. An incredibly unique world about living flesh planets, the women who live in them and trying to escape the life it forces them into. The writing is so gooey and evocative that you feel slimy just reading it. Squidapus thought the plot was easy to predict because of the themes/point it tried to convey but it didn't detract from the journey. Also, all the people on these worlds are women! Well earned the genre "womb-punk"

Seems like several different books sloppily glued together. Despite how it's entirely inner monologues, the view point characters seem poorly developed.

So-so instead of bail because the world-building was interesting.

[Plot direction spoilers]

I've read too many "main character goes a quest journey collecting quirky companions" books. It's a lazy and unimaginative plot choice.

I first listened to this audio book but this time around I read the hard copy. Definitely picked up more this time. As always, I‘m a sucker for worldbuilding and this has it in droves. From largely organic world-ships to cephalopod guns (🤩) to a female-only society with no mention of any other sex, it‘s just totally fascinating and easy to get lost in.

Ann Leckie describes this book as “kind of awesome fun” & she‘s not wrong. What‘s not to love? It‘s a space opera populated by an all female cast—that‘s right, there isn‘t a man to be found anywhere—living on world-ships on the fringes of the universe. It examines gender identity & more within a love story mixed up in a revenge tale wrapped inside some of the most creative worldbuilding I‘ve read in a long time. Excellent, thought provoking book.

#EmojiNov #day5 #🤷🏻‍♀️#WhatThe? This novel from start to finish had me going “What the hell am I reading?!” The story is so strange and weird, I have no clue what the inside of the authors brain looks like, but I bet she‘d rival Stephen King himself! With living spaceships, all female human race, recycling people, women giving birth to ship parts & womb swapping, there‘s a hella ton of crazy here, but so well written you can‘t put it down🤷🏻‍♀️

#SeptemBowie #day1 #SpaceOddity I have never read a book set in space that is more odd than this one. Where do I start? With the organic living ships that have tentacles, bleed and have cancers? What about the all female civilization that give birth, not to babies, but to parts of the ship that are needed? How about the womb swapping. Or the recycler monster that eats people. Space Oddity indeed.🚀

Kameron Hurley's standalone SF novel is an all female character tour de force with imaginative world building and a twisting plot filled with deception and betrayal and although I felt that some of the supporting characters were a little undervalued (notably antagonists Rasida and Anan), the novel nevertheless kept me engrossed from beginning to end.

Well. That has got to be the most strange, disgusting, weird, compelling, bananapants SciFi novel I have EVER read! In a reality far from ours, humanity is clinging to life on the rim of the galaxy in a series of organic ships called The Legion. I say humanity but it's only women. And instead of giving birth to babies, they give birth to parts of the ship. And there's cannibalism. And mutants. Plus womb swapping. Oh, don't forget the 2headed witches.🤔

My next read is this highly regarded SciFi novel written by the same woman who wrote The Geek Feminist Revolution. On the rim of the universe, a company of decaying world-ships known as The Legion are moving in the seams between stars. A war has raged for control for generations with no progress. Zan awakens with no memory, but is told she's the salvation of the Legion, but even with no memory she knows they are lying. Soon she must choose sides.

This was a really engaging read. I'm very pleased to get to see what's happening with the space opera genre these days. This one takes two elements we're familiar with—memory loss and generation ships that have existed so long that the passengers have forgotten they're passengers—and combines it with the idea of living spaceships, giving us a story that feels very fresh. Great characters, engaging storyline, and amazing worldbuilding.

As violent and bloody as can be expected from Hurley's work, but also a great exploration of a woman's dual nature and creator and destroyer, both of which involve massive amounts of pain and blood. I do wish it was longer though; plenty of stuff that was left hanging and I wish was further explored/developed.

I have been waiting for this since its release was announced last year, and I am SO EXCITED to finally get to it! So glad to see Hurley go back to sci-fi, and in a space opera at that :D. Of course, it's bound to have a LOT of blood and other bodily fluids spilled out in ways that'll make me cringe in sympathetic pain, but that's part of reading a Kameron Hurley production, and I've always been willing that particular price-for-entry XD.

When you understand what the world is, you have two choices: Become a part of that world and perpetuate that system forever and ever, unto the next generation. Or fight it, and break it, and build something new. The former is safer, and easier. The later is scarier, because who is to say what you build will be any better? But living in servitude is not living. Slavery ensures one's existence, but there is no future in it.
