The Casual Vacancy
The Casual Vacancy | J.K. Rowling
A big novel about a small town...When Barry Fairbrother dies in his early forties, the town of Pagford is left in shock.Pagford is, seemingly, an English idyll, with a cobbled market square and an ancient abbey, but what lies behind the pretty faade is a town at war.Rich at war with poor, teenagers at war with their parents, wives at war with their husbands, teachers at war with their pupils...Pagford is not what it first seems. And the empty seat left by Barry on the parish council soon becomes the catalyst for the biggest war the town has yet seen. Who will triumph in an election fraught with passion, duplicity, and unexpected revelations?A big novel about a small town, The Casual Vacancy is J.K. Rowling's first novel for adults. It is the work of a storyteller like no other.

When all of your books are packed and you're left with what's unread on your Kindle but you just can't! This is not the first time I tried reading J.K. Rowling's The Casual Vacancy. Not sure what it is, but I just can't finish this book.

As a lover of Harry Potter, and a huge fan of J.K. Rowling, I really wanted to love this book aimed for adults. But it honestly left me disappointed. Maybe my expectations were high, but I had a difficult time caring about these characters. Most of them seemed like awful human beings, and the plot was a bit dull, in my opinion. Her writing style, descriptions, and the level of drama were the only reasons I was able to read it through to the end.

Was not that great. I wasn't expecting it to be Harry Potter, but I also wasn't expecting it to be a bad book. Every single character is flawed, none of them have any redeemable qualities to make their flaws forgivable. It didn't seem to have a 'point' except to force the reader to voyeuristically watch everyone suffer and be miserable. (sorry no selfie for this book, deleted from my Kindle before I thought to take a picture!)

DivineDiana That‘s unfortunate. I have this book on my TBR shelves. 😕 7mo
Runner5ive You may like it a lot better than I did. It's essentially about a drug addict single parent and their child who live in poverty, which I have experienced myself as a child. So I don't really like reading books about it, intended to 'entertain' me. 7mo

This novel has not received the acclaim it should because it was her first book after HP under her name. But if you pick up a glass of milk expecting orange juice you are not going to like it - or even recognize what it is. I think that is what happened with this book: a lot of disappointment about what it is not.

They say Rowling wrote Harry Potter in Portugal ☺️. Living here the last month and a half has certainly let me see how picturesque it is everywhere. Maybe the writing magic will rub off on me here too before we leave. Hmm... In between running after a toddler of course. Currently reading The Casual Vacancy (there was a copy left here at our Airbnb). Man, a lot of these characters are so nasty!

Full disclosure: I read this solely because Queen Rowling wrote it.
90% of the book was very slow moving and I'm not 100% there was an actual plot beyond "how one person's death affected a town", but the last few sections were very good. Rowling is a master at writing characters (even though most in this book were terrible people) and the world they move in. Harry Potter, this is not, nor is it my taste, but it wasn't bad.

Bailedbailed

Bailing at 160 pages....I keep looking at it and I‘d rather do something else then pick it up and read....including hoovering! I just don‘t care enough about any of the characters to want to know what happens. Definitely a marmite book.
Time to move on. Can‘t believe I didn‘t finish a JK book....

Birdsong28 I think it maybe its that you are comparing it to H.P as you know in your mind it's the same author but a completely different subject. 📚📖 1y
Andrew65 I must be honest, and will definitely be shot down here, she has never appealed to me. Read the first HP book and was good but not great. Started the second one and never finished it. 1y

TrishB @LiteraryinLititz @gilroyc Marmite is like a disgusting spread thing that people have generally on toast (I‘m not sure if it‘s just UK?) basically you either love or hate (me) it - no in-between. Same with marmite books - doesn‘t tend to be an in-between -either love or hate! Hope helpful 😁 1y
Cosyreader Ugh I hated this book! Don‘t know how I finished it. I‘ve heard her detective series is good but honestly I don‘t rate her as a writer (even though I love HP). 1y
minkyb Not read this one and Now I certainly won‘t bother. Thanks. Maybe I can give you a list of titles to screen 😜 1y
arubabookwoman In the minority—I loved this book. Also liked the miniseries based on it. I don‘t care for her mysteries, but tbh I only read part of the 1st one before bailing. And I‘ve only read the 1st HP—out loud to my kids. After that they were on their own. 1y
LiteraryinLititz @TrishB Ahhhhh. Now I understand. Thanks! 1y
LeeRHarry If you‘d rather hoover than read a book then it is definitely time to bail!!!😏 I liked this one and the mini series. 1y

gilroyc Nope. Doesn't improve. It felt like loosely connected vignettes to me. Too many similar characters. Just a release type of writing. 1y
chapter_fifty2017 I thought this was a great book , l think the characters are so realistic this book was about what really hides behind small town councils a lot of posturing and hypocrisy and l not just talking about England . TrishB @RaimeyGallant @laurenashley @enidkeaner @BooknerdsLife @MicheleinPhilly @gilroyc @chapter_fifty2017 thanks all. Maybe I‘m just not in the mood for small town unpleasantness - honestly these people just make me want to slap them. Close to bailing.... 1y
DorkieHollieReads I couldn‘t get into it. I tried 3 times and get a little further each time and still was just not a fan of it. I did like her Cormoran Strike series better, where she writes under the Robert Galbraith pseudo name, if you like detective mysteries. 1y

It‘s so hard to rate this. The writing and character development in this book are amazing. Rowling is a master at having dozens of characters—and you care about all of them! But on the other hand, I would not recommend this book. It is fairly crude, nonredemptive, and bleak. It definitely takes a lot to keep reading it. Very good, but also very gross. But maybe that‘s just me, expecting books to be happy and entertaining? Not all books need to be.

I‘ve been reading the book, off and on, for a long time. There are a lot of characters and most of them have nicknames, so they were hard to sort out throughout most of the book. Watching the miniseries on HBO, really helped put faces to names and sort everyone out. The show is not the same as the book, I was surprised at the stuff they changed. The end of this book is absolutely heartbreaking. I‘m going to give it 3.5 stars.

Yesterday I got the first J.K. Rowling book that wasn‘t A Harry Potter book. I can‘t to read it. What did you all think of this one? Good like Harry Potter or completely different?

ChaitanyaSethi It is nothing like Harry Potter. You mustn't think of comparing the two otherwise you won't be able to appreciate this book for what it is. It is a departure from Rowling's usual writing style. But I genuinely enjoyed this book, bleak as it may be. 2y

darklydreaming I have this book but have yet to read it! Loved Harry Potter (obv) but haven't been compelled to read this one. Let us know how it is!! 2y
Ubookquitous Not at all like HP. Small village politics that revolve around a sudden death of a council member - great characters, subtle humor, lots of social commentary. I listened to the audio which was good 2y
PenguinInFlight I haven‘t read this one, but I have read some of the ones she writes as Robert Galbraith - Cuckoo‘s Calling and The Silkworm - and I liked both of those a lot. Nothing like HP, plot-wise, but her writing is still fantastic. (edited) 2y
staci.reads Don't go into it expecting it to feel anything like the HP books or you'll be disappointed. It's a good book though in its own right. I really liked it. 2y
whippoorwill815 Just this morning I was thinking of re-reading this! I liked it as well, but as others have said, it‘s not even remotely similar to HP. I also adored her Robert Galbraith series. 2y

Cosyreader I didn‘t like it. It was too long and there were too many characters. I‘ve heard the Robert Galbraith ones are good but after reading this I decided I just don‘t like her writing. But still give it a go! 2y
LiteraryLona I tried it a few years ago and hated it. :( 2y
Burghbookaddict Most people I talked to hated this book but I really liked it. It reminded me of the area I grew up in. Which is why I moved.... 2y
Chelleo Off-Topic: I have a question for you. Can you email me at Chelleo.Michelle@gmail.com ? 2y
tonyahoswalt I haven't read it, but everyone I know that did said it was depressing. I did read and enjoy the Cormoran Strike books she wrote as Robert Galbraith though. 2y
East_Of_Imagination I wasn‘t a fan, I did not finish. I prefer to read her Comoran Strike novels under the Robert Galbraith pen name, they are so good! 2y
TheWildCard I really liked this one. I grew up in a small town, and Rowling gets the small town politics exactly right. It‘s disturbing, but very realistic. 2y
lyradora Yeah, I read the Cormoran Strike books, and enjoyed those. But I love mysteries and I *rarely* read non genre fiction, so Rowling's few literary fiction books just don't interest me. 2y
kelecoo I hated this one. So dreary and not worth my time. Felt like JKR tried to overcompensate and show how adult she could write and instead just wrote the most depressing book ever. Her Cormoran Strike books are excellent as others have said. 2y
BibliophileLife This one was a little hard for me to get through. I read it in between other books. Not bad just not what I wanted from her that‘s all. 2y
hanseatic @BookaholicNatty i absolutely loved it. It's brilliantly written, dark and realistic. 2y

Thoroughly enjoyed this book for its host of well crafted characters and clever telling of their interconnections. Turned out to be a modern tragic tale. I had this book on my shelf since it was published and never read it. I‘m glad I finally did. JKs writing is so engaging.

When you just want to get a birthday card but you can't leave the bookstore without buying a book... Couldn't resist the pretty cover. 😍 #bookwormproblems 📖

This book has been on my #tbr for, like, forever and I'm pretty keen to see if I'll like it since I've seen so many mixed reactions. Have any of you read it?

I was curious to see how Rowling would approach a novel for adults that didn‘t involve magic. Loved the characterizations, particularly the teenagers. She has a real feel for how people that age see the world. The plot took a while to get going and got bogged down a bit in the middle. But the denouement moved quickly, decisively to a somewhat harsh ending. She doesn‘t flinch from assigning tragic consequences to thoughtless actions.

SusanInTiburon I liked it too! 2y

I‘m giving this 3.5⭐️ Of course this is a well written book, it‘s just that the subject matter (the dynamics of a community) wasn‘t that interesting to me. Though the length of the book certainly gave me time to care about the characters. #LitsyAtoZ #C

I suggest when reading this book becoming familiarized with English terminology is a must. Just like her previous HP series, in this novel Rowling offers a refreshing view of the characters, they never merely exist. Each character is purposeful to the next action and storytelling of the satirically situations we find ourselves in.

Texreader This is such a good book. About a thousand characters (I exaggerate a little), but it takes a while to get them all straight. But I did ❤️ this book. 2y
Librosycafe I am genuinely intrigued by the characters. It had some sad parts, but I enjoyed it. 2y

TheBookAddict @mrozzz yes! He printed it out on card stock and placed it in an envelope under the tree so I can frame it. It has my name on it and it is the complete letter with the materials needed list included. I love him, he‘s the best! 😊💕 2y
