The Diary of a Nobody | George and Weedon Grossmith

I admit straightaway that I had never heard of this before and only bought because a) it looked lovely (I have a weakness for slipcases) and b) a quick google search revealed it to be late Victorian humor. It was fun. Not laugh-out-loud funny, not a moving plot, not towering characters. But fun.

It's fine, everyone. I can just sleep with the lights on for the rest of my life. No big deal.

(That being said, I've been excited to read this ever since seeing the AMAZING play that's based on it in London)

I've had a slow, sluggish drag through some non-fiction lately and I just wanted something else. "Broken Wheel" has been on my TBR for a while and so far it's just what I needed.

If you were a painter in the 17th century, what would have been the best way to ensure your face is remembered? If you're Vermeer, Rembrandt, or Dürer (especially Dürer!), you paint yourself into every work someone asks you do! Check it out at the link below or over at bookwormhistory.com! Much information was taken from this Dürer bio as well as "Vermeer" by Karl Schütz.

What is the easiest way to tie together a 3rd century BC Greek historian, a 16th century Italian iconographer, a 17th century Dutch revolt, a 19th century Austrian count, and a 20th century German dictator?

Would you believe it's a painting by one of the world's greatest artists?

I've really been enjoying this so far. Laid out as a "design your own historical walking tour" of Manhattan, it contains some fascinating stories, some well-known and some obscure. In a lot of cases I wish they had included more detail, but that would take the fun out of doing my own research!

Just finished up a new episode all about the various portraits and pictures supposedly of William Shakespeare! What did the Bard of Stratford-on-Avon actually look like (probably not like the guy in this picture)?

Completely ignoring the facts that I bought it for research and that it contains the original account of Swedish explorer S.A. Andrée's fascinating and tragic attempt to reach the North Pole by hot air balloon, I LOVE THIS BOOK!!! It's an old library copy, copiously illustrated, and has maps!

I love this book. I love it in a sad, peaceful way that's difficult to describe. I first picked it up after reading a @bookriot piece about books for people who love "Batman" (they were right!) and have read it twice since. The perfect book for settling into melancholy with a smile and a sigh.

amandaz I know that sad, peaceful feeling! I felt it when I read The Shipping News. 8y

Uranometria | Johann Bayer

Wasn't able to get any pictures, but as research for an upcoming piece I was able to page through a first edition "Uranometria" (1603) this afternoon! Arguably the first truly artistic star atlas, "Uranometria" ("Measuring the Sky") served as the basis for the mural on the ceiling of Grand Central.

Sue That sounds amazing!!! Bummer you weren't able to get photos. 8y

Really enjoying this bio so far. Surprised and pleased to learn exactly how (deservingly) cheeky he was! Not always content to merely sign his works, he painted himself into no less than FOUR major commissions! (Left: "Feast of the Rose Garlands". Right: "The Martyrdom of the Ten Thousand")

About to start two weeks of training and hard study tomorrow, so what's the best way to prepare? A new book tonight, obviously! Been meaning to pick this up for a while, looking forward to it!

BookNotes I enjoyed this book. 🙂 8y
BookwormHistory @CherylRussell I've just begun but am enjoying it so far. Histories tend to be written in broad strokes and personal stories like these tend to be forgotten. It's refreshing (and fascinating) to read about these women and the roles they played! 8y

OH DEAR GOD WHAT HAPPENED TO MY BOOK?! This keeps getting weirder and weirder but I love it!

shelly cool, interesting page layout :) 8y
BookwormHistory It is such a weird book! It's this odd, unsettling psychological thriller where the actual book (layouts, fonts, even text color and placement) becomes part of the narrative. 8y
Ubergeekygirl House of Leaves is amazingly creepy, I've let others borrow it and most have had a hard time finishing because it's so unsettling. 8y

strikingthirteen I read it once, lost my mind, and I bought it recently hoping to give it a go again. 8y
DrBird Every semester a student will suggest I read this and I have a strange relationship with it thanks to years of working at a Borders alongside a hyper stoner Wiccan metal head who kept insisting it was the greatest. 8y
BookwormHistory @DrBird I'm not sure if it's the greatest (I'm only about halfway through it) but it's definitely been a trip! I had it recommended to me by a subscriber who brought it up in a discussion about books with "nebulous authorship", and I see why! 8y
DiandraMae Oh lord. I'm afraid reading that would give me anxiety! 8y
MAESTROvonBOOKSTEIN What the hell is going on in that picture? Your book is broken! 8y
BookwormHistory @MAESTROvonBOOKSTEIN That was my reaction, too! 8y
bookwormkara It's so much fun!--and also the scariest book my wimpy self has ever read. 8y
Psychpharm Agree with the scariest book ever comment. 8y
RachelWeber One of my top five books of all time! 8y
BlameMattBoyd One of my favorites. Theatrics aside, it's a surprisingly moving story. 8y
TheWordJar I really want to read this, but I think it may have to be my "day" book. Sounds a bit too creepy to read after dark! 8y
BookwormHistory @TheWordJar Reading it at night definitely gives it atmosphere, but I also went to the kitchen around midnight after just putting it down and had a weird moment of uncertainty in the dark about how my hallways were shaped. 8y
SunshineCootie Is this the book that goes along with POEs second cd? 8y
BookwormHistory @SunshineCootie Yup, this is the one! 8y
JennyWares I love this book. So. Much. Took me 10 years and three tries. But so worth it. 8y
BookNotes I have this. Started it once or twice, but haven't gotten very far. I am determined to finish it though. Some day. I'm drawn by the quirkiness. @SGJ have you read this? 8y
SGJ Yep. Friend was interviewing MZD in Dec 99, and slipped me some. I was two weeks out of being done with my Demon Theory. HoL both gave me hope and broke my heart. Glad it exists, though. Raised the bar on what could be done between the endpapers. 8y
callunakeep @WingsOfGlass I NEED this book!! 8y
Polly This scared me so much I had to bail, but I loved the layout and the approach so much. Will go back to it one day, maybe with all the lights on this time. 8y
ReeMariani I had so much trouble following this one. Maybe I should try it again being quite a bit older. 8y
Misi I wanted to be scared by this book. And. Nope. I tried 3 times. It's still on the shelf taunting me 8y
codenamepercy How in the world do you read a book like that?! 8y
erinmcf The challenge is worth it! Danielewski is crazy though, Only Revolutions's layout is also nuts. Top half of text right side up, lower half upside down, and you read from both ends at once, flipping the whole book over every 8 pages. #madness #amazing 8y

The Civil War, 3-Volume Box Set | Shelby Foote, Berger
post image

Last year's big reading project was the Sherlock Holmes canon. This year's is "The Civil War" series by Shelby Foote. They're amazing, just as wonderful as advertised!

PennyNotSoDreadful Shelby Foote - quintessential charming southern gentleman! 8y
BookNotes This series is on (one of) my TBR pile(s). 📚 8y
BookwormHistory @CherylRussell I had been meaning to pick these up for a while. So glad I finally did, I'm about halfway through the first one and it's wonderful. Foote's style is conversational with sacrificing facts or sounding like he's talking down to the reader 8y
BookwormHistory @Ruso He really is! I first heard of him (like many, I suspect) from his work in Ken Burns' "The Civil War". His voice and manner comes across in his writing the same way it did on film in the documentary. 8y
