pickI absolutely love the more modern storyline in the book. The author has a style of writing that really pulled me in. However, there‘s a story within the story that almost ruined the entire thing for me. It‘s basically about the legend and folklore about this particular fishing spot the the town that used to exist around it. The owner of a local diner tells the tale to two fisherman in an attempt to scare them away….and he drones on for hours!!!

bailedThere was a story within a story and unfortunately that smaller story lost me… too many people dragging around a plot that lost my interest. I‘ve hear good things tho and I think it might be worth another try later on, but for rn it‘s going in my list as a DNF.
pickOk, started strong with some big horror elements, but did not expect where we ended up. 3.5 ⭐️ , wish it would‘ve stayed more zombie woman raised from the dead and actually discussed more about The Fisherman. I can see LOTS of cool stories within this story. I hope John writes more. Also this BEGS to be a film adaptation.
pickThere is a whole lot packed into this relatively short book, including a whole other story within the story. Really well-written and creepy as hell in places, but still somehow just a guy telling some fishing stories. Brilliant.

This tale is an absolute Lovecraftian nightmare. The worldbuilding is so wonderfully crafted. It‘s beautifully disturbing🎣💀
I'm listening to this as an audiobook, and the narrator (Danny Campbell) has a voice perfect for the story. I love when that happens 😊
so-soJust getting started and it‘s a tiny bit of a slog but it might be one of those books that describes every detail up front so that when stuff starts happening it‘s super dramatic. I‘ll let y‘all know

pickAbsolutely incredible. The universal definition of grief and loss is heavy here. Langan's imagery is beyond description. This story will sit with me forever. I'll never look into the water the same way ever again.
pickThis book was just so damn...satisfying! It‘s the best of both worlds - a horror novel that‘s also literary. The way Langan writes made me feel like I was curled up next to a cozy fire in a cabin, while someone told me a truly devastating, horrific and unbelievable story about the vast emptiness that grief left in two men. It was terrifying, and I loved it. I‘ll be reading more by Langan!

There's no Tada moment but definitely creepy.

pickRichard Kadrey suggested this book awhile ago and he couldn‘t have been more right about how utterly beautiful and moving Langan‘s story of a protagonist who lost his wife is forced to come to terms with that loss due to some very nasty occurrences. Quite a great contemporary gothic style horror story with plenty of heart and some of the best imagery I‘ve seen in a climax of a novel.

pickThis was @LiterRohde pick for #TeamHellboundheart and it did not disappoint. I preferred reading about Dan and Abe to the middle section - which dragged a tad too long - but I‘d certainly read more by Langan.
pickThis book takes its sweet time setting up Abe and Dan, two men grappling with grief, before things get dark and weird.
This was a 3 out of 5 for me. I never shook the feeling that there was something pacing- or plot-wise that I needed and wasn‘t getting, but it was still a solid horror novel.
For the record I am down for more by Langan. The more fantastical elements were great and I‘d love him to go full-on fantasy.

If the disparity between the small publisher and the big-name blurb provider is any indication, Langan seems destined to be one of those genre authors more respected than renowned. Which is a shame, given that this story can easily be stacked up against the likes of classic King (an unavoidable comparison). At it's core, it's a story about the horror inherent to the telling of stories themselves.

Couldn't think of a better way to kick off #october than with this recently procured horror novel. First chapter makes it seem much more intimate than I was expecting, though I'm anticipating things take a turn at some point.
pickThis some serious #darkfolklore #darkfiction! Excellent atmospheric read for those who like to explore new worlds within worlds.
pickI really really enjoyed this book. The telling is similar to his first book, "House of Windows", but it's far more gripping. It's a story and it's told brilliantly, like a story should be. You can imagine sitting in a booth in a dark bar and listening to an old man spin his tale. I'm a sucker for all things Lovecraftian and this is full of it. Spooky, dark and very enjoyable.
panSometimes I get an audiobook to share with my husband when we are going to be in a car for an extended period of time. I try to find something he will like, he did like this a bit more than I did.
