Slade House
Slade House | David Mitchell
By the "New York Times "bestselling author of "The Bone Clocks "and "Cloud Atlas "- A "Publishers Weekly "Literary Fiction Top 10 Pick for Fall 2015 "Keep your eyes peeled for a small black iron door." "" Down the road from a working-class British pub, along the brick wall of a narrow alley, if the conditions are exactly right, you ll find the entrance to Slade House: a surreal place where visitors see what they want to see, including some things that should be impossible. Every nine years, the house s residents an odd brother and sister extend a unique invitation to someone who s different or lonely: a precocious teenager, a divorced policeman, a shy college student. But what really goes on inside Slade House? For those who find out, it s already too late. . . . Spanning five decades, from the last days of the 1970s to the present, leaping genres, and barreling toward an astonishing conclusion, this intricately woven novel will pull you into a reality-warping new vision of the haunted house story as only David Mitchell could imagine it. Advance praise for "Slade House" "" I gulped down this novel in a single evening. Intricately connected to David Mitchell s previous books, this compact fantasy burns with classic Mitchellian energy. Painstakingly imagined and crackling with narrative velocity, it s a "Dracula" for the new millennium, a Hansel and Gretel for grownups, a reminder of how much fun fiction can be. Anthony Doerr, Pulitzer Prize winning author of "All the Light We Cannot See" David Mitchell s "Slade House" is a deranged garden of forking paths, where all the flowers are poisonous, and every escape is choked with thorns. Mitchell has long been acknowledged as one of the finest literary minds if not the finest of his generation; but he s also one of the most suspenseful, and he proves it in every gripping, vertiginous set piece. Joe Hill, "New York Times" bestselling author of "NOS4A2 "and" Horns" Sharp, fast, flat-out spooky, "Slade House" is such a hypnotic read that you are likely to miss your subway stop in order to keep reading. And by "you, " I mean "me." Daniel Handler, "New York Times" bestselling author of "We Are Pirates" and the Lemony Snicket series David Mitchell doesn t break rules so much as he proves them to be inhibitors to lively intelligent fiction. "Slade House" is a fractal offshoot crystallizing from his remarkable "The Bone Clocks, " an eerie haunted-house tale that takes as much from quantum mechanics as from traditional supernatural lore, a spellbinding chiller about an unnatural greed for life and the arrogance of power. #1 "New York Times" bestselling author Dean Koontz What can t David Mitchell do? "Slade House" is a page-burning, read-in-one-sitting, at times terrifying novel that does for the haunted house story what Henry James did for the ghost story in "The Turn of the Screw." It has all the intelligence and linguistic dazzle of a David Mitchell novel, but this one will also creep the pants off you. Adam Johnson, Pulitzer Prize winning author of "Fortune Smiles" and "The Orphan Master s Son" Fans of Mitchell s "The Bone Clocks "and" Cloud Atlas" will recognize the interlocking narrative structure and literary-fantastical bent of this new work. . . . Who doesn t want to just drink up all of Mitchell s writing? "Library Journal""

Not what I went looking for, but an entertaining time, regardless. As much supernatural mystery as horror, with some very creepy moments. Just enough world building/lore: never felt confused or overloaded, just intrigued. The ending works as is, but the last character introduced makes me want to read more in this universe.Cannot speak to neurodivergent rep, will leave that to own voices'.

Robotswithpersonality ⚠️As the timeline starts in the past, you encounter period-typical attitudes and uncouth people and offensive language, ableism, racism, fatphobia, misogyny, also mention of ED. 5mo

Bit of horror that I wasn‘t expecting. Felt a bit like Mitchell was trying on different styles in the early chapters, but love how it settles in to join a greater narrative thread (the Bone Clocks being the only other book of his I‘ve read) which leads me to read more.

This book is pretty damn good, especially so if you're into the David Mitchell mythology he's constructed. If you know about that, and you like that, then this is actually a must-read.

Down a hard to find maze-like alley is a small iron door built into the wall. Beyond that door lies a mysterious garden where, from the perspective of 5 individuals, we experience the tension, thrills and terror that is Slade House. To say anything more would spoil the story.
One of the joys of reading is discovering authors I‘ve never read before and loving their work. That is the case for me when it comes to David Mitchell.

DrexEdit I 💜 David Mitchell. One of the few authors that I've read just about every book he's written. 2y
DavidDiamond @DrexEdit Nice! Which book of his would you recommend I read next? 2y
DrexEdit @DavidDiamond It's hard to say. All of his books are so different, even though they are all connected. I think The Bone Clocks is probably closest to Slade House. But try Utopia Avenue if you want a trip through fictional late '60s British rock. 2y
See All 6 Comments
DavidDiamond @DrexEdit A couple years back I virtually attended the Henley Lit Festival where he was appearing alongside one of my favorite authors, John Boyne. The fact that I was attending this UK based festival from Los Angeles seemed to surprise them. Not as surprised though as I was when David Mitchell gave me a shout out “and thank you to David from Los Angeles!“. LOL! At that time I had added Utopia Avenue to my list. Good to know you approve! Thx! 2y
DrexEdit @DavidDiamond It is a good book! Not spooky like Slade House, but connected. Mysterious! 😄 I've got a couple of John Boyne books on my #TBR, but I've never read him. I'll have to fix that asap! 😊 2y
DavidDiamond @DrexEdit Yes, I noticed the words “bone clocks“ within the text of Slade House and it made me wonder if there was a connection! As for Boyne, my favorite of his is The Hearts Invisible Furies. Happy Reading!

Slade House made me want to read The Bone Clocks again. I feel I would appreciate it more now.

It is a short series of excellent character pieces set in the creepy sort-of world of Slade House.

As usual the writing is enviable and gorgeous.

The only thing I wasn't a fan of was the final chapter.

Yuki_Onna Good to know! I have recently bought myself a copy and now, after your review, I'm super pumped to read it soon! 3y

RaeLovesToRead @Yuki_Onna I only need to read Black Swan Green and Utopia Avenue and I'll have read all of his books! I'll watch out for your review 😊 3y
Yuki_Onna @RaeLovesToRead Wow, cool! He's one of your fave authors then, isn't he? Slade House is going to be my first read of his, and then I also got hold of a library copy of Number9Dream (during the whole of January, and most likely during February, too, so it's not super urgent)... I'm super excited for the two now! 3y
RaeLovesToRead @Yuki_Onna I actually didn't rate number9dream because I'm a fan of Haruki Murakami and it was trying really hard to mimic his style. There were things I liked about it (I'd give it a so-so) but my faves were Jacob Dr Zoet and, of course, Cloud Atlas. He is a BEAUTIFUL writer, but his books don't always form a coherent whole. Does that make sense?? 3y
RaeLovesToRead (I'd still give number9dream a go, don't let me put you off)!! His prose is gorgeous and there are magical realism elements that I enjoyed. 3y
Yuki_Onna @RaeLovesToRead You're a fan of Haruki Murakami, too? 😅 I am, too! 😆 Yep, I thought the synopsis of Number9Dream read a bit like a Murakami book, that's what made me request it at the library. Super excited for this now, too... 😂
Oh yes, I think it makes perfect sense! That's a beautiful way of describing Mitchell's books and you are making me curiouser and curiouser for his books! If he becomes a new favourite, that's your merit! 😊
3y
RaeLovesToRead @Yuki_Onna And if you hate his work you can blame me haha 😂😂 I love Murakami. There have been some great Japanese and Korean novels that I've read in recent years and number9dream felt a bit inauthentic by comparisom 3y
RaeLovesToRead Not bad though by any means... think I gave it 3 stars! 3y
Yuki_Onna @RaeLovesToRead Yep, then ALL the blame is going to be on YOU! 😋 ;) Three stars is still pretty good, but I totally 'get' what you're saying about it being a bit inauthentic when compared with 'real Japanese' books. I'll most def. tell you what I think about the two! And you really made my evening! 😊 3y
RaeLovesToRead @Yuki_Onna aww thanks! Happy reading and tag me in your reviews if you like (or I'll watch out for them!) 😊 3y
Yuki_Onna @RaeLovesToRead Of course I'll tag you! It will surely take me a bit, though, because I don't get much reading done atm... But I'll do my very best! 😅 3y

Started Slade House yesterday. From a technical point of view David Mitchell is one of my favourite writers. His prose is simply gorgeous and I envy it with all of my being!

From a constructing-a-decent-story POV he's a bit more hit and miss... let's see what Slade House has to offer... (I've told myself that if I read this and Black Swan Green, I can buy his latest offering Utopia Avenue!)

paulfrankspencer I too am a big fan of his prose. It's been a second since I read Slade House, but I don't remember loving it. 3y
RaeLovesToRead @paulfrankspencer It's intriguing so far... but so was The Bone Clocks and that deteriorated as it went along. I admired Cloud Atlas and Jacob de Zoet, I thought Ghostwritten was ok too. Number9dream was soooo wannabe Murakami that I didn't rate it. He's such a beautiful writer though... the quality is 👌👌👌 3y
paulfrankspencer @RaeLovesToRead I admire the 2 you do. Great books. 3y

It was like several short stories, all connected, and leading to the last story. I have not read The Bone Clocks, and I‘ve seen reviews that say some of the same creatures are in both. While that probably would have made this book more fun, I didn‘t feel like I was missing out on any info. Does that make sense? It‘s a good stand-alone book, quick read, fun little horror.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐I really enjoyed this book. I started reading knowing nothing. The only thing I knew was that it had something to do with a door. So it started off a little iffy for me, but then at around 25-30 pages, it got interesting. The plot was well developed and I enjoyed how the different "stories", so to speak, came together. The ending was a bit confusing for me though.

Wow what a read! You know a book holds me captive when I start and finish it within the same day. It was a hypnotic read, told over 5 decades, every 9 years a new person is drawn to enter Slade House where they are never seen again. A darkly hypnotic read perfect for rainy afternoon. #tea_sipping_bookworm #litsy #goodreads

🎧 Ahh where to start? Cloud Atlas, same sort of interlocked book. Bone Clock, reading it will help you understand this as Mitchell interweaves his stories but not necessary. More Gaiman than King. 5 chapters are 5 short stories that will sound repetitive as twins Nora & Jonah live in a mansion off Slade alley that only appears every 9 years for a day or 2 when they become uhh peckish so new characters every chapter. Creepy, atmospheric. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

4 🌟 This book is so scary I have trouble sleeping at night! It‘s a story about a haunted house that lure victim into their house every 9 years. It start in 1979 until 2015, so there is 5 different stories in it but it‘s all related to one another. The vibe is really creepy like I‘m watching a horror movie 😭 But the story is really good! Have you read this book? What are your thoughts?

“Read this in an afternoon.” Sometimes, that‘s the best summary of a book. Easy to read, intriguing to pull you through, but not something to inspire a lot of additional thinking. That said, he did a great job inventing a world, playing by its rules, and keeping forward momentum even through an intentionally repetitive structure.

I dont know what it is about David Mitchell... I don't usually enjoy magical realism but I love his books. They're so weird and complex, twisting back on themselves, stories inside stories...his language is so efficient and his characters so varied, each with their own voice... Slade House is shorter and reads in a more linear fashion than Bone Clocks or Cloud Atlas, but it's still quite the trip. Read it in one sitting, loved it.

this book sucked me in but started to lose steam towards the ends. i liked it enough to maybe check out The Bone Clocks but not anytime soon. it was a cool creepy little story but something fell flat. idk. this was my first book from this author and i‘ve heard his other works are much better, has anyone read Cloud Atlas? is it worth a read?

DogMomIrene I have not read Cloud Atlas. I tried listening to the audiobook. I think it might be a full cast, but it was a long time ago when I tried to listen to it. I can‘t remember if there were too many characters for me or if the opening scenario just confused me, but I decided within 20 minutes that it was not a book I could listen to. Just never actually sat down to read it.🤷🏻‍♀️ 4y

I was thoroughly impressed with this book. It took me only two days to read and I was engrossed with the short story "chapters" that fueled the story's progression.

Two siblings survive off the souls of lured victims every nine years, and opens a great realm of an occult/fantasy theme. It is part horror, part suspense, part detective. I really enjoyes this book.
