I'm Thinking of Ending Things
I'm Thinking of Ending Things | Iain Reid
"I'm Thinking of Ending Things is one of the best debut novels I've ever read. Iain Reid has crafted a tight, ferocious little book, with a persistent tenor of suspense that tightens and mounts toward its visionary, harrowing final pages" (Scott Heim, award-winning author of Mysterious Skin and We Disappear). You will be scared. But you wont know why Im thinking of ending things. Once this thought arrives, it stays. It sticks. It lingers. Its always there. Always. Jake once said, Sometimes a thought is closer to truth, to reality, than an action. You can say anything, you can do anything, but you cant fake a thought. And heres what Im thinking: I dont want to be here. In this deeply suspenseful and irresistibly unnerving debut novel, a man and his girlfriend are on their way to a secluded farm. When the two take an unexpected detour, she is left stranded in a deserted high school, wondering if there is any escape at all. What follows is a twisted unraveling that will haunt you long after the last page is turned. In this smart, suspenseful, and intense literary thriller, debut novelist Iain Reid explores the depths of the human psyche, questioning consciousness, free will, the value of relationships, fear, and the limitations of solitude. Reminiscent of Jose Saramagos early work, Michel Fabers cult classic Under the Skin, and Lionel Shrivers We Need to Talk about Kevin, Im Thinking of Ending Things is an edgy, haunting debut. Tense, gripping, and atmospheric, this novel pulls you in from the very first pageand never lets you go.

This could be a So-so or a Pan, depending on how you take the ending.
But if you do what the ending instructs, it actually does improve your experience & appreciation for it.

BarbaraBB I loved this one. Quite mindblowing 2w
erzascarletbookgasm Oh I liked this. Definitely memorable for me. 2w
Sweettartlaura @BarbaraBB I may have been a little ticked off, because I read it now as I‘m in need of short books to meet my year-end goal. To get to the end & get that instruction ... well, I was less than thrilled 😜. But I did it - & it worked. 2w

Firstly, read this in one sitting. Set aside two hours and just knock it out all at once. The claustrophobic suspense builds very well if you don‘t put this one down. The prose is staccato, helping to build that tone of unknown fear. And I never wanted to put it down! Now, I need several friends to go read this and talk about it because I‘m shooketh. I need to know what you think, maybe that will help me figure out what I think 🧐🤓 #bookhangover

Sweettartlaura I liked it. Enough for a pick. Didn‘t quite love it - I felt the unraveling at the end wasn‘t quite seamless. 2w
Sweettartlaura And I wasn‘t crazy about having to re-read it. But I did. And it did the trick 💁🏻‍♀️ 2w

I don‘t know how I feel about this book. I‘m sure reading it a second time would help it to make more sense, but I don‘t want to.

EDIT: I did some research. The book makes more sense to me now. However, I‘m thinking between so-so and pick. I guess it‘s just not really my type of book. It was boring until I hit about the halfway point. Then it was kind of intriguing.

3-3 1/2 stars (3 1/4?)

Book 19! So random story. I‘m on a dating site. I set my headline to the title of whichever book I‘m currently reading. I also mention that in my profile. Funny thing is, these guys almost never read that part and make some comment about my headline or ask about it. I can‘t put this book title as my headline. I‘d be too worried that they‘ll think I‘m suicidal. 🤦🏻‍♀️

I liked everything about this book except the ending. It‘s ostensibly about a woman who has decided to break up with her boyfriend going with him to meet his parents at their farmhouse during a snowstorm, but the ending is a real twist. The pervasive feeling of unease is well done and it‘s reasonably well-written, but the ending was incredibly frustrating and not in a good way.

Of course it had to start raining three minutes after I left the house. Since it was warmer than last week, it was bearable and I walked for 30 minutes. Trying to find the oldest grave on the graveyard, I haven't found the oldest yet.

Top picture reminded me of my grandmother. She hated this habit of leaving the watering cans near the graves. She would always bring hers from home on her weekly visits to her parents' grave.

Kaye I‘m glad you were able to get out today but sorry it rained. Neat pictures. I like reading the headstones. My only “getting out” will once again be to shovel. We got several more inches last night. I cannot wait to be able to walk outside ! It‘ll be back to the gym today. Hard to take interesting photos there. (edited) 11mo
julesG @kaye You could take pictures of the snow. Headstones here are boring. Most just have the name, date of birth and date of death. 11mo
Kaye Sometime when the weather is better I‘ll drive down to a nearby town. They have such a beautiful headstone down there in their tiny graveyard. Done with pics of a lighthouse and an ocean. Right now it‘ll be snow pictures. (edited) 11mo

Does a thought only translate to reality once we assign action to it? Or are our thoughts the only reality that‘s true? This is a question that is interwoven throughout the book, and takes new forms as the plot evolves. Spine-chilling tension throughout. You have no idea what‘s coming.

Wow, this was astonishing. I understand the love/hate reactions it engenders, but I am very much on the love side. I‘m hard to scare, so any book that genuinely unsettles me is automatically a winner in my mind. My husband came to bed last night and found me practically incoherent, trying to explain what I had just read. So glad there is a full podcast episode dedicated to this novel, and helping me wrap my head around wtf is going on here. 🙃😅😰
