The October Country
The October Country | Ray Bradbury
103 posts | 60 read | 1 reading | 87 to read
Welcome to a land Ray Bradbury calls "the Undiscovered Country" of his imagination--that vast territory of ideas, concepts, notions and conceits where the stories you now hold were born. America's premier living author of short fiction, Bradbury has spent many lifetimes in this remarkable place--strolling through empty, shadow-washed fields at midnight; exploring long-forgotten rooms gathering dust behind doors bolted years ago to keep strangers locked out.. and secrets locked in. The nights are longer in this country. The cold hours of darkness move like autumn mists deeper and deeper toward winter. But the moonlight reveals great magic here--and a breathtaking vista. The October Country is many places: a picturesque Mexican village where death is a tourist attraction; a city beneath the city where drowned lovers are silently reunited; a carnival midway where a tiny man's most cherished fantasy can be fulfilled night after night. The October Country's inhabitants live, dream, work, die--and sometimes live again--discovering, often too late, the high price of citizenship. Here a glass jar can hold memories and nightmares; a woman's newborn child can plot murder; and a man's skeleton can war against him. Here there is no escaping the dark stranger who lives upstairs...or the reaper who wields the world. Each of these stories is a wonder, imagined by an acclaimed tale-teller writing from a place shadows. But there is astonishing beauty in these shadows, born from a prose that enchants and enthralls. Ray Bradbury's The October Country is a land of metaphors that can chill like a long-after-midnight wind...as they lift the reader high above a sleeping Earth on the strange wings of Uncle Einar.

It‘s the first day of October, the #scarathlon has officially started and I am so excited!! So excited in fact that I don‘t have the first idea what I‘m going to read so here‘s a picture of most of my owned “spooky” books. This does not include the heap of spooky books I have checked out from the library that are currently taking over my nightstand. I know you can‘t see the titles very well, but any suggestions as to where to start? #teamslaughter

Fantastical horror short stories from the master, Ray Bradbury. I‘ve read some of his shorts before but I thought with autumn officially here it was time to sit down with a full collection. And I was not disappointed. Dark, creepy, atmospheric, and unsettling!

Some stories are better than others, but with Bradbury that means they range from excellent to fantastic. I like the three stories about the Elliott Family, an extended family of vampires with different abilities [cough-twilight-cough], of which "The Traveller" is particularly good. "The Skeleton", about a man at war with his own bones is a brilliantly twisted idea, with a creepy ending. "The Emissary" is a sweet story... ??

Bookwomble ...about a boy and his dog, with the most chillingly evocative final three words in the book. "The Scythe" (there was a reason for the picture!) is about Death, the dustbowl and the madness of war. "There was an Old Woman" is darkly humorous (as are several of the others), with the final story being a writer's tale that doesn't really for the mood of the other stories, but is still good.
I love visiting with Ray; he never disappoints.

"More murders are committed at 92° Fahrenheit than any other temperature. Over 100, it's too hot to move. Under 90, cool enough to survive. But right at 92° lies the apex of irritability, everything is itches and hair and sweat & cooked pork. The brain becomes a rat rushing around a red-hot maze. The least thing - a word, a look, a sound, the drop of a hair and - irritable murder. Irritable murder - there's a pretty & terrifying phrase for you."

Bookwomble I knew this "92°" theory from the Siouxie song on Tinderbox, and wondered whether Ray's story, "Touched by Fire", was where it started. Siouxie' s song starts with a dialogue clip from the film "It Came from Outer Space", and a quick search showed it was released 1953, whereas Ray's story was published 1954, so maybe, I thought, he borrowed from the screenwriter? Yes! he did - a screenwriter called Ray Bradbury! So are urban legends born ? 3mo

Next up, earlyish Bradbury. Horror, macabre and Southern Gothic stories rather than sci-fi. Bradbury does this type of story just as well as his generally better known stuff.
This one comes from close to the roots of Mount TBR, having been shamefully neglected and languished on my shelves for 39 years, as I bought it from the second hand book stall in my home town market while I was still at school! Hopefully, worth the wait!

We recently made a "forever pumpkin" at our local pottery place. Haven carved a creepy cat with some help and then painted all over the back. They fired it in the kiln for us and we had it home within a week. It was a fun family project & a great Halloween keepsake that I'll probably keep out year round!

#BlackCatChallenge Day 20: Two books I have read with #October in the title. Tagged book is one of the short story collections that made me fall deeply in love with Bradbury. Homecoming is the title from this collection that spoke to me deeply and remain unforgettable even up to now. The Clancy novel was when I had my Grisham, Mario Puzo, Dean Koontz phase 20 yrs ago.

Lizzy recommends 2 favs from Ray Bradbury this #StaffPickFriday. "Nothing says October to me like Bradbury! The Halloween Tree was the first Bradbury book I ever read (perfect for middle grade readers). It‘s fast paced & a blast to read! For adult readers, The October Country is a collection of short stories that are classic Bradbury - filled with horror, nostalgia, and longing, not to mention a crisp of autumn air chilling each one.” #bannedbooks

#TBRtemptation post 5! Glancing through, the illustrations in this edition of the seminal award-winning book are amazing. This was Bradbury's 2nd short story collection. From funhouse mirrors to parasitic accident-watchers to strange poker chips, this imaginative group of stories presents both sides of his childhood nostalgia, from the celebratory to the tragic. They were written between 1943 and '54. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎
