The Violin Conspiracy | Brendan Slocumb
post image
Pickpick

The way Brendan Slocumb writes whenever Ray picks up the violin is utterly enchanting. You could omit the words ‘Ray picked up the violin‘ completely and know just by the way the words pick you up and start dancing around you. I listened to the audiobook, which has violins playing between each part. It is a wild story; parts of it were hard to believe, and other parts were rather predictable.

Found my new favorite book. And my new favorite character. “Life, loathe it or ignore it, you can‘t like it.”

ETALTON @Vansa picked 5 winners for my January #trappedonanisland! 2y
Liatrek This has been on my TBR forever really need to read this year 🙂 2y
Vansa Super happy you like it! Who's the favourite character? Aren't so many bits rolljng-on-the-floor laughing hilarious?! 2y
ETALTON @Liatrek You should!! Pick it up when you need a good laugh. 2y
ETALTON @Vansa Marvin!! What‘s better than a manically depressed robot? Who thinks of that? I typically read dark heavy things and it took me longer than it should have to fully embrace the humor. But once I did, I was laughing out loud! 🐋 🌸 🐁 2y

My kid loves graphic novels, but I had never read one. I heard about this graphic novel on bipolar Reddit and decided to try one out. It‘s pretty great.

Beatrice's Goat | Page McBrier
post image
Pickpick

To close out Uganda for #foodandlit2023, we read A Good Trade and Beatrice‘s Goat. Both books center around the poverty and lack of education in Uganda, and both have white saviors. After reading these books, my daughter and I made paper beads while going on a Google Earth tour of Uganda. My oh my… sooo many churches.

My favorite bookstore is a small indie bookshop in St. Pete, FL, USA, called Tombolo Books! It‘s right next to my favorite coffee spot, which makes for very lovely (and sometimes expensive) Saturday mornings. Haha! @BennettBookworm #20kgiveaway

Did I read this book 3 times and cry every time?? Yes I did.

“People have forgotten this truth," the fox said. "But you mustn‘t forget it. You become responsible forever for what you‘ve tamed. You‘re responsible for your rose.”

Thank you @Vansa for this pick!! #trappedonanisland

Vansa I'm so glad you liked it!!! 😀It's genuinely lovely and profound. 2y

I was really excited about this one because I LOVED Book of Cold Cases. But I did not like this book. I would have bailed if it wouldn‘t have just ended. My copy from #libby had about 30 pages left when the story ended and I was scrolling though thinking I had to have missed something. It felt like more of a synopsis of a story than an actual story.

Was I going to make a witty post about this book? Yes. Am I too busy sitting on the floor crying my eyes out to do that? Also, yes.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

“People think that intimacy is about sex. But intimacy is about truth. When you realize you can tell someone your truth, when you can show yourself to them, when you stand in front of them bare and their response is 'you're safe with me'- that's intimacy.”

ETALTON I will miss saying, “Mommy‘s having some quiet time now. Please don‘t bother me until I‘m done with this husband.” *My husband‘s face: 😳* hahaha 2y
marleed I love the words TJR writes into the voices of her characters. 2y

Educated: A Memoir | Tara Westover
post image
Pickpick

As a bipolar person and someone who often suffers from bipolar disorder, some of Educated was emotionally difficult to read.

The manipulation and toxicity in how her family communicates remind me of my childhood. And my current life at times. Bible verses followed by eerily calm, casual conversations then threats and aggression, later followed by love and guilt stirs up so much emotion it makes me nauseous.

Continued in comments

ETALTON While this book was a challenging read for me, it was also inspiring and heartwarming—a must-read. As Tara takes you on her incredible life journey, you must decide what to call it. You could call it transformation or metamorphosis or falsity or betrayal. She calls it education. 2y

Peter Brown lyrically tells the story of Roz, a farm robot. Recently refurbished, Roz is determined to find her way back home to her son. Like in book 1, Roz teaches essential lessons and pulls on your heartstrings along her many adventures. I read this aloud along with my 7-year-old. She and I both LOVE both The Wild Robot and The Wild Robot Escapes!

If aliens blew up the world tomorrow, what would you regret? 👽🛸💥🌎

I grew up with parents that had a toxic relationship with money. It bled over into my life, and now I find it very difficult to deal with finances without spiraling out of control.

Melissa Leong doesn‘t only talk about money, she also gives advice on how to live a more fulfilling life. And sometime asks fun questions like this one. So, if the world explodes tomorrow…

ETALTON I would regret never starting a poetry teatime with my daughter. Which now that I think about it, someone on here post a ton of poetry that we could read if I started poetry tea time today. 2y

sarahbellum Did you all read I Kissed Dating Goodbye as a teenager too? 😬 @JamieArc 2y
sarahbellum @ETALTON @JamieArc did you hear that the author made a public apology about that book and other works he created at the time? He kept hearing how damaging it wound up being for young women and had a real reckoning about his faith because of it. I‘m no longer religious, but had a real church phase when I was a teenager 😵‍💫 2y
JamieArc @sarahbellum Yep, sure did! And yes, I remember reading about his apology and having that take me down several rabbit holes! 2y

Omeria Book One | Kathryn Thiery

Mehso-so

I found this book in a Little Free Library. I was still thinking about Sue Kidd‘s The Book of Longings and was excited to see Omeria seemed to take place in a similar period and have parallel themes.

That being said, this book is one I have not stopped thinking about. I read Omeria Book 1 mid-year, and I find my mind wandering back to the story time and time again, wondering what happens to Omneta, the bull dancers, and their people.

11/22/63 | King, Stephen
post image
Pickpick

I started reading Stephen King in November of this year. I read Later first, followed by Shawshank Redemption, then I picked up 11/22/63. 11/22/63 was my last and favorite book of 2022. I fell in love with the characters. I even found myself (momentarily)empathizing with the characters I thought I would hate. I was completely drawn into this story and found myself fantasizing about a time filled with cigarette smoke and absent of social media.

BennettBookworm I‘ve never seen an ornament like this- SO cool! I also loved the lost apothecary :) 2y
ETALTON @BennettBookworm thank you! I can‘t claim the idea, I saw it somewhere and decided I wanted to make my own. I filled it with our favorite books of the year! 2y
