Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo
Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo | Taylor Jenkins Reid
From Taylor Jenkins Reid, "a genius when it comes to stories about life and love" (Redbook), comes an unforgettable and sweeping novel about one classic film actress's relentless rise to the top--the risks she took, the loves she lost, and the long-held secrets the public could never imagine. Aging and reclusive Hollywood movie icon Evelyn Hugo is finally ready to tell the truth about her glamorous and scandalous life. But when she chooses unknown magazine reporter Monique Grant for the job, no one in the journalism community is more astounded than Monique herself. Why her? Why now? Monique is not exactly on top of the world. Her husband, David, has left her, and her career has stagnated. Regardless of why Evelyn has chosen her to write her biography, Monique is determined to use this opportunity to jumpstart her career. Summoned to Evelyn's Upper East Side apartment, Monique listens as Evelyn unfurls her story: from making her way to Los Angeles in the 1950s to her decision to leave show business in the late 80s, and, of course, the seven husbands along the way. As Evelyn's life unfolds--revealing a ruthless ambition, an unexpected friendship, and a great forbidden love--Monique begins to feel a very a real connection to the actress. But as Evelyn's story catches up with the present, it becomes clear that her life intersects with Monique's own in tragic and irreversible ways. Written with Reid's signature talent for "creating complex, likable characters" (Real Simple), this is a fascinating journey through the splendor of Old Hollywood into the harsh realities of the present day as two women struggle with what it means--and what it takes--to face the truth.

I read this Feb 10-16 & gave it 3.5 stars. I have a longer review on Goodreads that books down to it‘s a good story that veers into the melodrama. I am surprised that everyone seems to love this book as much as they do. But I felt that way with Daisy Jones & the Six. I think I liked the premise of both stories far more than the execution.

Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I love Evelyn ❤️❤️ 3d
Aaronlisa @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I think my love for Evelyn is why I kept reading the book. It was refreshing to see a female character like Evelyn who doesn‘t apologize. She is who she is and you will either love her all the more for it or you won‘t. But she won‘t care.? 3d

Absolutely a 5 star read. I absolutely loved the story. Half the time I loved the characters and half the time I hated them but that‘s what kept me reading! We find out early that there is a connection between Evelyn and Monique but have to wait till the end to hear it. Such amazing storytelling! 🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩

5/5 Taylor Jenkins Reid is becoming one of my favorite authors (read Daisy Jones & The Six). This is another clever format to tell a compelling story that spans multiple decades. I found the characters likeable, complex, and deep. The chapters flow so smoothly and are paced perfectly. At times it's hard to find a stopping point.

Evelyn Hugo was a famous Old Hollywood movie star who was finally ready to tell her life‘s story to journalist, Monique Grant. I absolutely loved this book from start to finish. It gave me all the Elizabeth Taylor, Marilyn Monroe, Ava Gardner, Jayne Mansfield vibes. I actually couldn‘t put it down because I just HAD to find out more about Evelyn‘s life and her connection to Monique. My #Booked2020 pick for “Set in Hollywood”

Litsy, you‘ve done it again! You said this book was amazing, and I looked at it like 🤨 why would I be interested in a novel about a woman and her 7 husbands? I surprisingly enjoyed Daisy Jones & the Six, so another Taylor Jenkins Reid book seemed like it might be better than I thought it‘d be. And I ❤️ Julia Whelan as a narrator, so I finally tried this. And you, Litsy, were right! It‘s SO good and so much more than it seems! #blameitonlitsy

I might not have picked this one up if it weren‘t for #Booked2020. I didn‘t think I would enjoy Evelyn‘s story. I was so wrong! The beginning is a little slow, but about 22% into the audio I became captivated. I didn‘t always agree with Evelyn‘s choices, but I think I understood most of them. Just like with DJATS, I ended up kind of loving this book. #SetinHollywood

Finished January 19.

Bookzombie Also, now I‘m a little curious to read a memoir or biography of an older Hollywood actress. Feel free to recommend any you enjoyed! 3w
Cinfhen I wasn‘t such a fan but I‘m wondering if audio might have changed my opinion. I LOVED Sally Fields memoir but she‘s not what I‘d consider “old” Hollywood. I think there‘s meant to be a good book about Marlene Dietrich & Rita Hayworth but I haven‘t read it 3w

Star wise I would give this a 3.5.
I can see what the hype is, but for me it falls into the great storyteller but not great writing camp.
Pros - The way sexually and sensuality are taken on.
Cons - I just do not enjoy the language and the simplicity of the writing. Probably my fault as I am also reading I Am by Maggie O'Farrell which is utterly beautifully written.
Overall it is a pick because it is a simple but enjoyable read.

ChaoticMissAdventures I also did not enjoy the constant talk and glorifying of "skinny". I know why she did it, but I found it lazy and distracting. 1mo
Reagan Yes, thank you. I liked this one, it was an easy entertaining read but did not fall into the must read category for me at all. 1mo
ChaoticMissAdventures @Reagan I always know I cannot be alone in feeling a book is not spectacular! 1mo
ChaoticMissAdventures The more I think about it the more annoyed I am 😂 This book is so close to Daisy Jones that it is just lazy. Some reporter format, similar twist (DJ the reporter knows but the audience does not) I really enjoyed DJ and now I am so glad I took it on first. 1mo

This is an exceptional historical fiction novel, a genre that is often hit or miss for me. While occasionally verging on soap opera-ish, I was fully invested in the story, and Evelyn Hugo herself. I love imperfect and flawed characters like Evelyn. I do wish the supporting cast would have been a bit fleshed out. Harry especially felt a bit flat.

This is my current audiobook. After Evelyn describes someone with a bad bubble cut, I had to Google it. Most of the images that came up were of Barbie. I‘m pretty sure I couldn‘t rock this style if it were popular now.

A beautiful love story. At first I wasn‘t sure I liked the format as much as “Daisy Jones.” The interview narrative style no longer seemed unique and didn‘t seem as natural at her other book. Despite that, I did get drawn in and found the story very compelling. Her characters are incredibly interesting and complex, and you really do feel like these characters must really exist somehow. And not just Evelyn, but even minor side characters.

I almost didn‘t like this book. Almost. But then, at Chapter 60 (out of 69), Reid turned it around for me. She did it because she surprised me—and that doesn‘t happen very often. Probably owing to my age, most books (and movies, and TV shows) don‘t surprise me at all. I usually see the end coming from a mile off. This book has a lot of things I don‘t like, such as taking historical events and/or figures and making a collage/composite; a nearly ⬇️

gradcat ⬆️ soap-operatic style; and a few incorrect and/or anachronistic points every now and again. However, I felt truly pleased when I finished the book, in spite of all that. I can put it this way: If not for that ending, I‘d have called this a so-so book. But that finish? All I can say is, “Wow!” #Booked2020 #Winter #SetInHollywood ♥️ 1mo
4thhouseontheleft I‘m reading this now, and definitely agree it feels a bit soap opera-ish, although I think I may be enjoying it more than you. I like her writing style. I‘m on Chap 20 but now really want to peak at Chap 60! 🤣 (edited) 1mo
Cinfhen This was a so-so for me, as was her other book Daisy Jones. I find her plots a little too much LifeTime TV. Glad the book redeemed itself for you 💚 1mo

MelissaSue81 Huh. I REALLY liked this book, mostly because of the characters... but I definitely saw the ending coming..funny now experiences can vary so much. 1mo
amber_ldsmom I was going to read this for a book set in Hollywood for Booked2020, but then I changed my mind in favor of The Last Tycoon. 1mo
gradcat @amber_ldsmom The Last Tycoon is one of my favorites—maybe even more so than The Great Gatsby. ♥️ 1mo
gradcat @Cinfhen & @4thhouseontheleft So funny you use that particular description, Cindy...I just told my houseguest that I was reading a script for Lifetime, only two or three days ago, that was. But it did turn around for me at the end. I was looking forward to tagged...so it‘s in the same vein? Huh.... 🤔 1mo
gradcat @MelissaSue81 I think we had experiences that were the inverse of each other‘s...you never know how something is going to strike you at a given time, though. I don‘t want to spoil the plot for others, but I really did not work out that ending in advance. In hindsight, it seems like I should have, though... 🤦🏻‍♀️ 1mo
4thhouseontheleft @gradcat What makes Daisy Jones and the Six a stand out read for me was how well down the audiobook is. The cast of narrators is absolutely fantastic. I recommend that format if you choose to read it. 1mo
Crazeedi I'm glad you ended up liking the book, I enjoyed it!! 1mo
gradcat @4thhouseontheleft & @Crazeedi I am going to read tagged, but I already own the book, thanks to the lovely crazeedi, who sent me the book as a gift. It will fine, I‘m sure. Also, it‘s still not an entirely natural thing for me to listen to books, but I‘m getting there! I know I‘ll like it, given what all of you guys have said in reviews. ♥️♥️ 1mo
Crazeedi @gradcat I guess the audio of the book I sent is better, but I liked reading it. Sometimes you just need fluff instead of stress! 1mo
gradcat @Crazeedi Not to worry, Diane! At this point, I prefer books to audio, because I tend to drift off sometimes when I‘m listening to audio. So you did the right thing!! Love you, woman! ♥️♥️♥️ 1mo
Crazeedi @gradcat I find if I'm not cooking or cleaning or working outside, I can't listen to books either, as I tend to fall asleep too! I'd love to listen at night when I go to bed so I don't have to hold a book when my bedroom is cold, but I always fall asleep!! Love you right back Minette!💕😍 1mo
gradcat @Crazeedi You just summed it up precisely—I don‘t want cold, arthritic hands, so it would be great to listen in bed—but no can do here. I‘m like you, I have to be doing something! I‘m sort of out of pocket for a few days, so my chat comments are very behind—so sorry! But I‘m working on challenges, and trying to keep up with my reading. I sure do hope you feel a bit better!♥️ 1mo
Crazeedi @gradcat I'm feeling much better thank you. I stopped the new med the dr gave me, so I have to see him to figure something else ! I'm trying to read, lately I've been rather slow!! 1mo
gradcat @Crazeedi I‘m glad to hear you‘re better. I just had to stop one of mine (prescriptions) that I‘ve been taking for about five years, so that will have me screwed up for a few more days. I hate this stuff! But I do hope they can give you something that you can tolerate. ♥️ 4w

This week isn‘t exactly turning out as planned. Not good, not bad, just...unexpected. I‘m happy to catch a few quiet moments at a local cafe.

The blaring Christian music they have on needs to go though. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Leftcoastzen That‘s kinda weird. 1mo
4thhouseontheleft @Leftcoastzen Yeah, it‘s a cafe I don‘t go to that often. Nice atmosphere in an old building, but the songs blasting Jesus, Jesus, Jesus ad nauseam is kind of annoying. But I‘m probably the only one bothered by it. And I‘m literally just down the street from our synagogue! It seems to be a new trend in our area, some local businesses (juice bar, coffee shops, etc) have gotten very Church-y in atmosphere. Works for them, but not me. 1mo
ravenlee I hate Christian pop music. There‘s a pizza place we go to very infrequently, in part because they always play Christian pop very loudly. It‘s kind of nauseating. 1mo

I found this very entertaining and more enjoyable than “Daisy Jones & The Six”. Reid did an amazing job of developing a complex MC, whom I know I should hate but can‘t help but care about and root for. A little bit slow at times, overall I enjoyed walking the thin line of morality with Evelyn. I totally get why there is so much love for this book.

I absolutely loved this and couldn‘t put it down. Glamorous, romantic, gossipy, like Daisy Jones & The Six I kept forgetting it wasn‘t real and I couldn‘t Google Hollywood film star Evelyn Hugo. Although it‘s an easy read there‘s more depth to the story than it initially appears and it is utterly compelling.

Wow. This book! I absolutely loved it. Reid is quickly becoming an auto buy author for me. She has a true talent for writing morally gray characters that you love or hate. This book is very similar to Daisy Jones, so if you didn‘t care for that one I wouldn‘t recommend Hugo. I can‘t wait to pick up my next read by Reid! I paired Hugo up with my Red Tartan book sleeve ❤️🖤

And presumably my final book from #santathing! (Plus third Book Depository bookmark -- a duplicate for me, but no doubt good for a swap down the line!)

I've been looking at this for a while, but not sure if it would be my thing. Now I can give it a try! Thank you, anonymous Santa!

One of the best books I‘ve read this year. Even after figuring out the twist, it remained a page turner. The writing flowed and the social issues brought up throughout were beautifully examined. Also, Finnegan‘s eyes matched the cover.

This was an easy read about the different kinds of love humans can have, and the complicated actions and consequences that follow from trying to protect oneself or those you love. It wasn't something that made me cry, which is what a lot of the reviews made me think would happen, but it was a good read.
