We‘re Going on a Bear Hunt by Michael Rosen is a realistic fiction picture book that I have performed with children‘s grades preK-2nd as a song. This book is perfect for a choral read and the students love this interactive book. The Absolute True Diary of a Part Time Indian by Sherman Alexie is a National Book Award Winning realistic fiction novel. This is about a boy who is just trying to get through his life as an Indian boy on the native reserves. This is a great coming of age novel for grades 4-6. This book would be perfect to use in literature circles to allow for collaboration.

This book is about a young boy who‘s mother always sang to him, and then when she got sick, he sang to her. This book would work well as a read aloud and a choral read for the song.

ambera I love this book! It is so pure and I wish I have heard of it sooner! If I'm not mistaken, I believe Phoebe sings part of the song from this book in Friends. I know Joey reads it as a birthday present to Rachel and Ross's daughter (this is where I first found out about the book) 6y

JordanL If you have a class in Florida, Disney is such a big part of Florida and this book would be awesome. This book could also be great for new students in Florida who just moved, or ESOL students who don't know much about Walt Disney and his impact on Florida's tourism. 6y

ambera I spend a lot of my downtime at Disney or watching Disney movies so I would definitely consider using this book in my future classroom! I also agree with Jordan's comment about how we live in Orlando, the home of Disney World, so I'm sure students would love to hear about this amazing man. 6y
KaitlynN I love the idea of starting to collect biographies of “locals”. Disney is a great example. I think if kids can find a simple way to connect with a person they will want to read more, and connect with them on a deeper level. Even if their first connection is just geography, it could entice them to keep reading to find out more! (edited) 6y

Don‘t let the Pigeon Drive the Bus by Mo Willems is personally one of my favorite children‘s books about a pigeon that wants to drive a bus while the bus driver is away. The pigeon interacts with the readers in this modern fantasy picture book that has won a Caldecott award for it‘s amazing pictures throughout the book. This book would be perfect for a read aloud with your students in the classroom to allow them to interact with the pigeon.

Green Eggs and Ham by Dr. Seuss is a children‘s favorite for it‘s illustrations and rhyming schemes. This poetry picture book is amazing for Read Alouds in classrooms.
