I really enjoyed this Deadpool volume. I find his comics a bit hot or miss for me but this one had Squirrel Girl whom I just love plus it was a murder mystery. Well worth a read and this was my favourite illustration int he whole thing - need to keep an eye out for more by Jay Fosgitt!

Loved this YA story - the group of friends are great and I found myself laughing out loud at the book a number of times. It‘s a good representation of where we are with LGBTQ+ in U.K. schools and where we need to go and why we still need to. The story is huge fun with dirty politics, romance and friendship making it a fab read.

My Worst Book Ever! | Allan Ahlberg, Bruce Ingman

This picture book is a story all about trying to write a picture book and it going wrong. I really enjoyed it, it‘s fun to look at how a book is created and all the everyday disasters that are battled in trying to get a book in someone‘s hands. The illustrations are great and really add to the story. It‘s quite long so I‘d argue more the age 6+ end of the picture book market.

Sonny and Me | Ross Sayers

Loved this YA title. It‘s written in Scots through the voice of a 17yr old boy. It is very much how the pupils in my school talk and, it‘s the first book I‘ve read where the Scots written was like the way I speak. It does have swears if that bothers you, though if you‘ve hung out with any 17 year old boys that won‘t be much of a shock 😆 Me (Daughter) and his best mate Sonny are a wonderful example of what a friend is.

My 8 year old recommended this one to me and it‘s brilliant. Read it in one sitting and loved it. It‘s divided into chapters so perfect for a middle school read as well. A number of jokes made me grin but mostly I just loved Red Panda and Moon Bear - such fun characters.

This book made me cry - Al‘s mum ends up back in prison, he is full of anger and fear but his pet rats help him feel better. This book is an emotional, engaging and powerful read. It‘s not very long, dyslexia friendly print and well worth reading.

Jews Dont Count | David Baddiel
post image

“...Jews are the only objects of racism who are imagined - by the racists - both low and high status. Jews are stereotyped, by the racists, in all the same ways that other minorities are - as lying, thieving, dirty, vile, stinking - but also as moneyed, privileged, powerful and secretly in control of the world. Jews are somehow both sub-human and humanities secret masters.” This is a brilliant book - witty, thought provoking and important.

This was brilliant. Read by Adam Hills it is genuinely funny, inspiring and engaging. I not only wanted to listen to it but have sung its praises and rushed to make sure I added positive reviews. The audio book was absolutely the best way to enjoy this. (Warning there are a few swears so probably not the best choice for family listening).

Loved this story - the girl is determined to live in one place but the ghostly residents less keen. The characters are all really engaging and the illustrations are lovely. Totally want to read more about these characters- though the book is a complete story arc and works really well as a one-off.

Loved this comic - so much so I went and read the webcomic to finish the story and I have added it to things I will treat myself to when I have spare money! This volume is the first two years of uni told from the point of view of Bitty - a gay, baking loving, ice-hockey player, history major. It‘s about growing up - finding yourself, your friends and your way. A warm and cosy hug of a book.

Wonderful re-telling of A Christmas Carol! It‘s a really sweet story and the characters are well rounded and you want to help George change his father‘s heart so much. Plus the wee nods to Dickens original are great fun.

Just read Fangirl and loved it - so much so I went on to read ‘Carry On‘ (the book the character is supposed to be writing) and it‘s sequel ‘Wayward Son‘. Fangirl was the best for me of the bunch and I would totally recommend it to anyone who loves Harry Potter, Supernatural, books about books and writing, teen coming of age stories and romance. #teamBaz

Enjoyed this read. It was billed as a graphic novel in my local library which isn‘t what it is. There are lovely illustrations of each lady, a couple of pages of text about them and then a page with a comic strip about the authors discussing them. It makes a nice change from usual list of inspirational historical women and is a good reminder that history is a reflection of who writes it and social opinions of the time.

Enjoyable supernatural mystery set in an English High School. It has the bonus of being written by someone who actually lives in the U.K. and knows the system so the turn of phrase, imagery and characters all felt authentic. Already looking for the next volume.

I enjoyed this comic a lot, I liked the depth given to the gay cartoon icon, though I did struggle at first with the realistic art style. My only disappointment was discovering in the endnotes that the historical information wasn‘t as accurate as I had thought - people/places/events had been moved in time or playing a different role for a better story. I can see why they did it and it didn‘t detract from my enjoyment. Exitus sacrna sinistram.
