Murder Most Unladylike
Murder Most Unladylike | Robin Stevens
When Daisy Wells and Hazel Wong set up their very own secret detective agency at Deepdean School for Girls, they struggle to find any truly exciting mysteries to investigate. (Unless you count the case of Lavinia's missing tie. Which they don't.)Then Hazel discovers the Science Mistress, Miss Bell, lying dead in the Gym. She assumes it was a terrible accident - but when she and Daisy return five minutes later, the body has disappeared. Now Hazel and Daisy not only have a murder to solve: they have to prove one happened in the first place. Determined to get to the bottom of the crime before the killer strikes again (and before the police can get there first, naturally), Hazel and Daisy must hunt for evidence, spy on their suspects and use all the cunning and intuition they can muster. But will they succeed? And can their friendship stand the test?'Ripping good fun' The Times'A skilful blend of golden era crime novel and boarding school romp . . . The novel works both as an affectionate satire and an effective murder mystery, and Stevens can go places Enid Blyton never dreamt of . . . Top class' Financial Times'Plotting is what sets this book apart; this is about who was where at the time of the murder, and it's about finding the chink in the alibi' Telegraph

Happy weekend Littens! What exciting things happened this week? What interesting books did you find?

I finished revising a manuscript & turned it into my agent! Woo! This is my 4th revision & a chance to polish polish polish before finding a new publisher. Fingers crossed my agent likes the new version! All that work has worn me out a bit though. So you can bet I'm going to be spending my weekend snuggled up w/this doggo & a stack of books. 📚🐕

gradcat I cannot think of a better partner to cuddle up with over the weekend—sooo cute! 🐶 ♥️ 2mo

Saw this shelf talker in Foyles Charing Cross Road and I could not agree more. One of my favourite current middle grade series

Melissa_J Foyles at Charing Cross is my favourite bookstore! Unfortunately I live on the wrong side of the Atlantic to visit regularly 😢 2mo
Verity @Melissa_J I love it too. It‘s my treat to myself to go for a wander there. And this week has been hellaciously busy, so when I ended up not going home after work on Tuesday night, I made a visit my Wednesday treat. 2mo

I had no idea middle grade mysteries could be so fun and intriguing. When I was in middle school, I went through an Agatha Christie phase, but I havent read many mysteries since. This book rekindled that childhood joy for me in an unexpected way. I definitely want to read more of Stevens.

I got this because I'm trying to put my money where my mouth is, and the author did a great thread on Twitter. It's a bit younger than I usually enjoy, but it's good fun all the same. I don't love Daisy, of course, but I'm not sure you're supposed to; like her role model Sherlock, her genius is flawed. She and her friendship with Hazel felt realistic; I remember worshipping another girl like that at school, and how awful it was when we had a row!

Bk179 Of 2017 is done! This book is the first in a series of cozy crime novels which are like a middle grade version of Agatha Christie.Set in a English boarding school in the 1930s,two third graders decide to start a detective agency when one of them finds the body of their science teacher in the gym, only for the body to disappear 5mins later. It suffers from first book syndrome a bit, but was a very cute read. Thanks to @thegirlwiththelibrarybag

Verity I love this series: like Enid Blyton boarding school stories and Agatha Christie Books had a baby. But more diverse! 2y
Karkar Marvin the Martian!!! My favorite ❤️❤️ (edited) 2y

It‘s 5am on Thursday here in Sydney and I haven‘t slept yet. Insomnia can be a bitch.😳 Dulling the pain with a bowl of chocolate frozen custard, toffee caramel frozen custard & Maggie Beers Burnt Fig, Caramel & Honeycomb icecream paired with Bk179 Of 2017, Murder Most Unladylike which was a #letsgetcozy swap gift from @thegirlwiththelibrarybag earlier this year

JacqMac It is a bitch. I finally had a good sleep last night for the first time in days. I hope it gets better for you. 2y
Centique I hope your insomnia goes away! Secondly isn‘t Maggie Beer awesome 🙌🙌 Love her food but haven‘t had her icecream yet. 2y
Lizpixie @JacqMac thanks lovely, me too. Yay for your sleep though!👏👏 @Centique unfortunately it‘s been lifelong for me, I‘ve learnt to sleep when I can. Maggie Beer is s food goddess, you have to try her ice creams! I love the one here the most but she has a chocolate one that‘s fantastic and a new honey & almond I think which was very nice. Sweet, but really nice. Plus more flavours. 2y
Dragon @Lizpixie your ice cream sounds so yummy! Hope you sleep better tonight. Take care of yourself 💐 2y
Jeg I‘m on the opposite coast. I wake at 4am and read. It‘s wonderful . 2y

#UncannyOctober #day19 #Whimsical Most cozy Mysteries have that whimsical factor, very cute & sweet. Quaint, fanciful & amusing pretty much describes both these series of books. Alan Bradley's Flavia DeLuce novels are very addictive, set in the DeLuce family mansion, Buckshaw, a crumbling manor house in the English countryside, Flavia is an aspiring chemist. When not planning revenge on her two older sisters, she's trying to solve mysteries.

TheKidUpstairs I love those Flavia covers! 2y

I don't usually read YA, but a friend gave this to me and it's Spring Break so why not. It's cute, although I'm not sure it's transcending the youth audience for me. FYI: it looks like this has a different title in the US, "Murder is Bad Manners".

This reads like an Agatha Christie murder mystery except it's set in a boarding school and the detectives are children. I loved the descriptions of biscuits that were had at bunbreak, and the excitement of a midnight feast complete with ouija board.

Now, should I pick a book from my box of book buying shame OR get myself down to a bookshop, STAT for the next Wells and Wong book? 🤔🤔🤔

Daisy read it and sighed. 'Mummy thinks telegrams are very now,' she said, 'only I can't make her understand how they ought to read. I suppose I shall have to telephone her - she'll be very awkward about it if we simply turn up.'

The 1934 equivalent of trying to teach your parents (or grandparents, if you are particularly fearless) to text 😂😂😂

Killing two challenges with one post. This middle grade series, set in 1930's boarding school, is delightful as the two girls solve mysteries and eat tarts on bunbreak. And the narrator is a Chinese girl sent from Hong Kong to the boarding school so there's some interesting immigration/race stuff which is refreshing for middle grade.

Set in an English boarding shool in the 1930s, this book is narrated by pupil Hazel Wong as she and her friend Daisy Wells seek to solve a mystery worthy of their detective agency. The casual racism of the era and cruelty between children is not glossed over, which is not comfortable to read. However, the mystery and the solution is well handled. I believe there is a sequal and I'm pretty sure I'll be reading it.
