#ucflae3414su20
Wonder by R.J. Palacio is a RF book that was named as a New York Times bestseller. This book has been showered with awards and even turned into a major motion picture. Wonder is about a boy named August (Auggie) Pullman who was born with a facial deformity that causes him to get looks wherever he goes. He had never gone to a mainstream school. That is, until now. Join Auggie on his journey as he navigates uncharted waters...

Nkaufmann as a new student faced with many challenges such as bullies, science fairs, and his identity.

This book could be used for a literature circle (LC) as it evokes so many interesting discussion questions and discusses important messages such as learning to accept and love yourself for who you are. The UDL principle 3.3. regarding guiding information processing and visualization and the EL principle 10 regarding teaching think, pair, and share...
4y
Nkaufmann strategies in cooperative groups can both be met by this novel. Teachers should help students process this book by leading discussions that allow them to check for comprehension while also having their students in the literature circle discuss their thoughts about the book with each other.

#ucflae3414su20
Rosa by Nikki Giovanni and illustrated by Bryan Collier is a Caldecott award-winning biography (B) about Rosa Parks and the time she refused to give up her seat on the bus. This book also discusses the impact of her actions across the world.

Nikki Giovanni is a very famous author, poet, activist who was the first recipient of the Rosa Parks Woman of Courage Award.

Nkaufmann She is also a Grammy nominee and a three-time NAACP Image Award winner. Because of this, I think teachers should do a unit on her and her work (AS).

The UDL principle 3.1 regarding activating or supplying background knowledge and the EL principle 28 regarding providing biographies of significant men and women from different countries could be met by this book. Teachers should supply background knowledge on Rosa Parks before reading this book.
4y
Nkaufmann In addition, this book could be used for a history lesson as well as teachers can have students do a project on important figures in the world‘s history. (The students could use the biographies that the teacher has provided in the classroom. This would be helpful to ELLs as they could do a project on an important figure in their home country.)

The Ugly Duckling by Hans Christian Anderson and adapted and illustrated by Jerry Pinkney is a Caldecott award-winning book. The Patchwork Quilt by Valerie Flournoy and illustrated by Jerry Pinkney is Coretta Scott King award-winning book. The genre is RF and this book is about a girl named Tanya who helps her mother and grandmother make a patchwork quilt that tells her family‘s life story.

This book could be independently read (IR) due to the fact that this book has more words than other picture books.

The Rainbow Fish is a book that is written and illustrated by Marcus Pfister. The genre is MF and it is a Christopher award winner among many other awards. This book is about the Rainbow Fish who is a lonely fish known for his beautiful scales. One day another fish asks him for one of his scales and he immediately says no. His scales are what makes him different, how could he ever give one away?

Nkaufmann This book would be great for readers' theatre (RT) as the teacher could have their students play the Rainbow fish, the octopus, the starfish, and the other fish. But what they don‘t know is that this is a magical board game that is brought to life when people play. And once the game is started, it must be finished.

The genre of this book is MF.

Nkaufmann I think this book could be used for readers' theatre (RT) as the students will have a fun time acting out this famous story. When Planet Earth Was New is a non-fiction book (NF) written by James Gladstone and illustrated by Katherine Diemert. This book discusses what Earth was like when it was first created and how it has evolved since then. Personally, science is my least favorite subject but even I enjoyed this book as it utilized very simple language and was easy to comprehend. In addition, it has STEM connections to biology, geology, evolution, etc.

Nkaufmann ...so I believe it would be very useful in the classroom as it helps students with their reading skills while also learning about science.

This book could be great for storytelling (S) because students will be able to tell the story of Earth using illustrations or digital media which will be a fun science and reading activity. Moreover, this book allows the students to learn scientific terms and get a better understanding of our Earth as a whole.
4y

nquintus Naomi, I think you're spot-on with your chosen UDL principle and ESOL strategy. Both revolve around vocabulary, and that is what this book is all about!
