I picked a picture book for this month‘s #foodandlit for Venezuela. While it was a nice story, I felt like the history in it wasn‘t really explained but just implied, assuming the reader just knows. And especially for children‘s books, I don‘t like that.

This is a very informative and inspiring story. It sends the message to follow your passion and to never give up on it, even if you feel discouraged. You can bring your passion with you anywhere in the world.

This is a story about how a young girl named Teresa Carreño played the piano for president Abraham Lincoln. Her father taught her how to play when she was a young child. It describes her talent and passion of playing piano and making music. Teresa and her father had to sail to New York when a war erupted in her hometown. At 10 years old, Lincoln invited her to come play for his whole family because of how talented she was.

This book was so cute! It was about a girl who played the piano and she was so good that she began to play around the world and became known as the piano girl. It was a really good story overall!

Did you know a ten-year-old piano prodigy from Venezuela played for President Lincoln? I never heard of Teresa Carreno, but this great little book was a wonderful introduction. Vibrant illustrations accompany her amazing story.

I always enjoy Engle‘s books and this, the story of María Teresa Carreño García de Ceno, was no exception. The historical note at the end was uplifting (she travelled around the globe and played famous composers, but she only returned home to Venezuela once “because her countrymen disapproved of her, scandalized by the independent spirit that caused her to divorced three times before finding happiness with her fourth husband.”

I do judge picture books by their cover and these illustrations were fantastic.

In 1863, at the age of 10, Venezuelan refugee Teresa Carreño played piano for President Lincoln at the White House. Carreño would go on to be known as a composer and opera singer, as well as one of the best pianist of her era.

Illustrations by Rafael López perfectly capture the story in vibrant colors, winning him a Pura Belpré award this year.
