This Animal Fantasy book is another book that plays with your emotions, but is worth the read! I would definitely consider using this with older elementary students, as the younger ones would get less interested with it being such a "big book". This think provides you with a readers theater script that you can use in your class! https://texasbluebonnetaward2014.files.wordpress.com/2012/12/the-one-and-only-iv... #UCFLAE3414sp17

DrSpalding I love RT! Great find. Teachers have successfully used this in grades 3 and up! 8y

This NF book tells a true story about a dog named Bobbi and a cat named Bob Cat, and their survival after hurricane Katrina. This book surely pulls on your heart strings, especially the ending! This book was such a great read, that has many lessons you can incorporate with it! This think has questions for before, during and after the book, as well as activities! https://www.learningtogive.org/resources/two-bobbies-literature-guide #UCFLAE3414sp17

DrSpalding Excellent resource. This animal biography shows how bright animals truly are!🐾 8y
JarecS I love animal books and your reflection has me wanting to pick it up and read it, especially to a future class 8y

This traditional literature book provides a look on the other side of the story, from the wolf's side! We always tell kids "there's two sides to every story" and this book lives up to that quote. Before this class, I never even knew that there was a book showing the wolf's side of the story!! This link provides a great close reading activity! http://www.cpalms.org/Public/PreviewResourceLesson/Preview/60680 #UCFLAE3414sp17

DrSpalding Yes! Great idea to use CPalms! This variant is a great read aloud for the middle grades! 8y
krystag I really want to read this book! I was just about to suggest comparing the original story to this one then I saw your resource! Definitely a lesson I would do! I love Cpalms as well! 8y
KaylaC I want this book in my future kindergarten classroom! It would go so well! So many kids only know the one side of the story, but not the wolfs side, so this would be perfect to introduce to them! 8y

Owls | Adrienne Mason, Nancy Gray Ogle
post image

This NF book on owls provides students with a lot of different information such as the different species of owls, what they eat, etc. In my 4th grade class, we read all of the Guaridans of Ga'Hoole books together and then dissected an owl pellet. This link relates to an owl pellet dissection lesson plan with awesome worksheets! https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/lesson-plans/teaching-content/discussion-and... #UCFLAE3414sp17

DrSpalding What a neat memory of 4th grade! My boys dissected owl pellets too! It's neat that you can connect science with fiction and NF! 8y
KaylaC I have to add this book to my future classroom library because I love owls! They are so cute and not many people know much about them. This book will help teach me and my students more about them, which is what I definitely want to happen. 8y

My literature circle group read Pax. This RF book takes you on a rollercoaster of emotions, but you won't want to put this book down once you start reading it! This book definitely did not end how I thought it would, and would highly suggest reading it! This link is more for the upper grades as it includes discussion questions for this book http://www.sarapennypacker.com/paxdiscussionguide.pdf #UCFLAE3414sp17

DrSpalding So glad your group seemed to enjoy it! 8y
BrielleR I definitely want to add this book to my reading list! 8y

DrSpalding So you think it's fiction? What if I told you it was all...just a dream! 📚 8y
Rachelgoff @DrSpalding I think it's Fantasy! 😊 8y
DrSpalding @Rachelgoff if it was a dream...what would the genre be then? 8y

This book, based on a true story, is classified as NF. Throughout the book, you learn a lot about a snow dog named Balto, and you follow along his journey to receive some medicine and bring it to his town. This book would sure grasp a students interest. There is a statue of Balto in Central Park! http://www.wiesereducational.com/samples/?file=lgls3744is.pdf this link provides a writing activity, questions, and a crossword puzzle! #UCFLAE3414sp17

DrSpalding Novel-Ties is a neat resource! Another classic story about mans' best friend. http://www.centralparknyc.org/things-to-see-and-do/attractions/balto.html 8y

Millions of Cats | Wanda Gag

Pickpick

This TL book is about and old woman who wanted a fluffy cat. Her husband found millions of cats on the side of a hill and brought them all home, but then realized they couldn't feed every cat. The old man asked the cats which was the prettiest, and only one didn't think they were pretty. The old man and woman took in the "ugly" cat and made it pretty like the others! http://www.scholastic.com/browse/collateral.jsp?id=36051 #UCFLAE3414sp17

DrSpalding The theme of self esteem is important. I like how the guide suggests other books with the same theme. What kind of fiction? Use your guide.❤️📚 8y

Clifford Gets a Job | Norman Bridwell
post image
Pickpick

This F book is one of many books in the Clifford series. This book shows Clifford trying to get a job to help pay for all of his dog food. He starts off in a circus, then a farm, and finally a police station, where the police paid him in dog food! This shows kids how to be responsible, as Clifford was trying to be. https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/lesson-plans/teaching-content/teaching-respo... #UCFLAE3414sp17

DrSpalding Social studies and Norman Bridwell go hand in hand. Many of his stories discuss topics that must be taught in the elementary grades. What kind of fiction? Use your guide.❤️📚 8y

The Kissing Hand | Audrey Penn

The kissing hand, a Modern Fantasy, is one of those books that will most definitely touch your heart. This book is about a raccoon who doesn't want to leave home, or his mother. To provide comfort, the mom kissed the palm of her sons hand and explained how this will help him when he needs some comfort. This link has several activities that promote social and emotional development http://csefel.vanderbilt.edu/booknook/bn_kissing.pdf #UCFLAE3414sp17

Mlegg I gained some great insight on this book through your post! The first day of school can be a really tough one for young students, and this book along with the great activities you provided could really help make the transition a little easier for the student and the parent. 8y
DrSpalding An excellent book for the first week of school. I will bring my copy to show you what some teachers have done with this sweet book.📚 8y
CharlotteG This is actually one of my favorite books. My mother used to read it to me when I was a little girl before I went into school each day! This is an excellent book and I agree with Dr. Spalding because children can be so frightened before their first day of school and the kissing hand sends such a wonderful message! I loved your post. Thank you for sharing! 8y
BrielleR I love this book. I remember my mom reading this to me as a little girl. Wonderful book. 8y

This RF book "When Sophie Gets Angry --- Really, Really Angry..." is a Caldecott honor book, and has also won the Charlotte Zolotow award! This book talks about a young girl who gets really, really angry, and also tells us where she goes to calm down. When Sophie returns home, everyone is glad she's home. This link provides a great lesson to use when reading this book to your class! http://www.mollybang.com/Pages/sophie_act.html #UCFLAE3414sp17

AlanaA I look forward to reading this book! I think it would be great for students who have anger issues in the classroom - it's always nice when students can identify with books (: #UCFLAE3414sp17 8y
DrSpalding Rachel, this is a RF book. Be sure to identify the genre. Use the guide for help. Alana, you are right! Some children will need help in handling their emotions! 8y
BrielleR I love the theme of this book and how it can be used to help children with anger issues. 8y
