Do you write notes in your books?

I got this copy used and have been enjoying all the marginalia from the previous owner 😆

Is this Vol.1 and Vol. 2 set making anyone else's eye twitch?? Same publisher, different spine style. 😰

wanderinglynn I hate that! Absolutely hate it when publishers change up the covers so they don‘t match. 🤬 3y

The House with Chicken Legs | Sophie Anderson

8yr old and I are about half way through this and I love it so far. Some big themes so far (death, loneliness, friendship, family) and Slavic folklore. Death positivity in this is 🙌

tokorowilliamwallace I think I would have loved being introduced to Slavic folklore at that age. 3y

I think it started strong and now I just kind of hate it-- but feel obligated to finish to mark it as Read. There's no character development, no banter, mehhh

I just can't with this book. 😐
Long broken sentences drive me crazy.

wanderinglynn Agree! because by the time you get to the end of the sentence, you forgot what was happening. At least that‘s what happens to me. 5y

Still trying to get through this. It's a little hard to follow as the 3 timelines occur semi simultaneously and I can't just sit down and read it all at once. I don't really like the characters either, but at about halfway through I feel committed to finish.

Holy Shirt. I just scored a red letter First Edition of The Princess Bride from Thrift Books. I've gotten several signed copies of other books as well -- I guess it's their loss if they don't bother to check the value before listing them.

PagesByTheWater What does it mean when a book is red lettered? 6y
SweetAngst Just that some of the text is in red. The big deal with that is that when PB was published, Goldman wrote the book as if it was an abridged version of a book of the same name by a fictional author named S Morgenstern and Goldman inserted his own commentary in red print. All subsequent editions put Goldman's commentary in italics. 6y
SweetAngst The red-inked versions are just rare. The first editions hardbacks go for hundreds (if not over $1k). 6y

Two teenagers in 1897 England discover a musty old book in a library that summons a skeletal guardian who puts them into a maze filled with puzzles and monsters. They (and you) can only escape by solving the puzzles.

SO EXCITED for this to come in the mail tomorrow!! It's described as a "solve your own adventure" puzzle novel. I got the bundle with the audiobook as well which is narrated by Wil Wheaton.

#ThriftBooksHaul Part 1 of 2 recent orders.
? Finished - 84, Charing Cross Road
? Starting - If on a Winter's Night a Traveler
? New Author to Me - Borges - Not sure what to expect yet, but already disappointed in the quality of this one. It was stated as being in "Good" cond. ? #bookhaul

Cinfhen Have u ever bought from #BookOutlet??? Their prices are great and the books are all new❣️❣️❣️ 6y
SweetAngst @Cinfhen I've been on their site before, but I don't think I've ever bought anything. I had a "free book" credit on the other site I was trying to use and then got distracted ? I don't like how ThriftBooks has changed to a "free book under $5" instead of just a $5 credit though, so I might start shopping around a bit more now. 6y
Cinfhen I‘m also a total sucker for anything that says “free” & “credit” 😛‼️ 6y

A neat little volume of actual letters between American writer Helene Hanff and the employees of British bookshop between 1949 and 1969. Sometimes funny, sometimes heartening, sometimes sad. She didn't publish all the letters, so there are few gaps where previous letters are referenced that aren't included, but overall it was an interesting read

Theatrical | Maggie Harcourt
post image

Loved Unconventional. Starting Theatrical today.
Both are UK YA romance (ish) books about girl geeks that I had to order from BookDepository because they aren't sold in the US. Harcourt is so fun to read and I was grinning ear to ear on p19 when something from Unconventional showed up in this one. 😊

SweetAngst Both books have blurbs saying Harcourt would be great for fans of Rainbow Rowell, so I'll have to start reading her books when I finish this one. 6y

Night Film: A Novel | Marisha Pessl

"Perhaps I was suffering from the same problem as the man who'd sailed around the world and now on land, facing his farmhouse, his wife and kids, understood that the constancy of home stretching out before him like a dry flat field was infinitely more terrifying than any violent squall with thirty-foot swells."

📚 Night Film
📖 Hardback or large paperback, but I also love hoarding ebooks 😂
🙊 I hate assigned readings, so it'd probably be easier to list the only one I actually read -- Great Gatsby. And even that is cheating since I read it the summer before without knowing it would be assigned.

The "Choose You Own Adventure" style is fun and unique in a romance novel. A light and fluffy sort of read if you have a love/hate relationship with romance novels, as it playfully mocks the genre and reader.

I love books that tell stories in unique ways or using multiple medias within (or out) of the book -- "S," "Bats of the Republic," "House of Leaves," -to name a few. I'm not into horror very much, but I'm enjoying NIGHT FILM so far and the different types of documents embedded in the book.

Bailedbailed

I forced myself to read to chapter 17 because I hate giving up on books, but this one was incredibly boring for me. I'm glad I got it at a yard sale. The protagonist is bland, the attraction up til that point is just awkward, and the other characters are unmemorable. Solid Meh.

How many pages/chapters/etc do you usually give a book before you DNF? I know I haven't hit the major plot yet, but I'm feeling so meeeehhhhh about this book.

PagesByTheWater I would say 5 chapters. I almost DNFd the book I‘m currently reading after the first chapter. It didn‘t get better but it didn‘t get worse so I‘m putting up with it 6y
SweetAngst @PagesByTheWater Ugh. I just hit chapter 10. I think this is just one of those books I saw the cover of years ago and fantasized it was about something much more interesting. 6y
