Night Film: A Novel
Night Film: A Novel | Marisha Pessl
Brilliant, haunting, breathtakingly suspenseful, Night Film is a superb literary thriller by the New York Times bestselling author of the blockbuster debutSpecial Topics in Calamity Physics. On a damp October night, beautiful young Ashley Cordova is found dead in an abandoned warehouse in lower Manhattan. Though her death is ruled a suicide, veteran investigative journalist Scott McGrath suspects otherwise. As he probes the strange circumstances surrounding Ashleys life and death, McGrath comes face-to-face with the legacy of her father: the legendary, reclusive cult-horror-film director Stanislas Cordovaa man who hasnt been seen in public for more than thirty years. For McGrath, another death connected to this seemingly cursed family dynasty seems more than just a coincidence. Though much has been written about Cordovas dark and unsettling films, very little is known about the man himself.Driven by revenge, curiosity, and a need for the truth, McGrath, with the aid of two strangers, is drawn deeper and deeper into Cordovas eerie, hypnotic world. The last time he got close to exposing the director, McGrath lost his marriage and his career. This time he might lose even more.Night Film, the gorgeously written, spellbinding new novel by the dazzlingly inventive Marisha Pessl, will hold you in suspense until you turn the final page.Advance praise for *Night FilmBeautifully imagined, beautifully written, and hypnotically suspenseful.Lee Child, author of *A Wanted ManA testament to Marisha Pessls tremendous gifts as a storyteller.Scott Smith, author of The RuinsThis summers Gone Girl: a completely absorbing literary thriller.*Library JournalGet ready to talk about this book.*Entertainment WeeklyA literary mystery thats also a page-turner . . . Night Film might be the most talked-about novel this summer.*Time Out New YorkAn inventiveif brooding, strange and creepyadventure in literary terror. Think Edgar Allan Poe and Stephen King meet Guillermo del Toro as channeled by Klaus Kinski.Kirkus ReviewsExpands from a seemingly straightforward mystery into a multifaceted, densely byzantine exploration of much larger issues . . . Into this mazelike world of dead ends and false leads, McGrath ventures with his two, much younger helpers, Nora and Hopper, brilliantly portrayed Holmesian irregulars who may finally understand more about Ashley than their mentor, whose linear approach to fact finding might miss the point entirely.Booklist (starred review)Praise for *Special Topics in Calamity PhysicsA whirling, glittering, multifaceted marvel . . . an irrepressibly smart and flamboyant new voice. The New York TimesPessls talent for verbal acrobatics keeps the pages flipping.*USA Today*[A] blockbuster debut.People (Critics Choice)From the Hardcover edition. From Publishers WeeklySeven years after Special Topics in Calamity Physics, Pessl returns with a novel as twisted and intelligent as that lauded debut. Again, the story centers on a father-daughter relationship, but this time the sinister element is front and center, beginning with the daughter's death. The night films of Stanislas Cordova have a cult following: fans hold underground screenings and claim that to see his work is to leave your old self behind, walk through hell, and be reborn. Ashley Cordova is his enigmatic daughter; she appears in his final film at the age of eight, debuts as a pianist at Carnegie Hall at 12, and apparently commits suicide at 24. Scott McGrath is a reporter who lost his job investigating Stanislas and can't resist his need to uncover the real story of Ashley's death. Though the structure is classic noir, Pessl delivers lifelike horror with glimpses, in the form of faux Web sites, of the secretive Stanislas, his films, and his fans. Things slow down when Scott breaks into Stanislas's estate; sustained terror depends on what is withheld, not what is shown. But Pessl does wonderful work giving the hard-headed Scott reason to question the cause of Ashley's death, and readers will be torn between logic and magic. Agent: Amanda Urban, ICM. (Aug.) ReviewAn inventiveif brooding, strange and creepyadventure in literary terror. Think Edgar Allan Poe and Stephen King meet Guillermo del Toro as channeled by Klaus Kinski. In her sophomore effort, Pessl hits the scary ground running. Kirkus Reviews

1. Normally one in each format, so one kindle, one audio and one paper but I don‘t always stick to just three I‘m a bit chaotic

2. Night film from way back in January is a clear standout! I‘ve listened to some pretty awful audiobooks just cause they were free on audible plus, which was cost effective at least but the books weren‘t good lol

I've made a deal with myself that I am going to finish my in-progress books before the year is out. How many do I have unfinished? I lost track. There's...a lot of them 😳

Am I going to stop starting new books? Since I started a new one today I'm gonna go with NO.

I'm going to give it a good try though! Been halfway through this one for a bit so it gets priority tonight.

An investigative reporter is in search of the truth about a filmmakers (Cordova) life and Cordova's daughters death and life. The story is so well written that I started to believe that the filmmaker and his films were real! Each time I thought I knew where the story was headed it turned a different way. perfect ending - great read from start to finish.

7-12-22: My 67th finished book of 2022! Scott McGrath, an investigative journalist disgraced by a famous director, Stanislas Cordova, is haunted by the death of the director‘s daughter, Ashley. Deemed a suicide, Scott and his unlikely team, Nora and Hopper, must find out how she died and why. It took me longer than usual but I really enjoyed following these characters to the brink of madness and back again. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️🤷🏼‍♀️#️⃣6️⃣7️⃣

A beautiful young woman has been found dead, her father a famous film director who hasn‘t been seen in over 30 years, a detective determined to find out the mystery behind it all…no matter the cost. Written in online articles, police files, & notes, this book will take you on a ride. I loved every minute of the story & it kept me guessing until the end what had actually happened to the beautiful young girl whose demise began the story.

I'm working on Night Film and enjoying it but I'm not sure I'm in the mood right now. Might pop in the audiobook for The Drowning Kind later. I need to reorganize my bookshelves at some point this weekend so I might even find something there that grabs me.

I can‘t remember the last time I loved a book this much. Very odd and probably not for everyone, with its lack of answers particularly at the end, but this was everything I‘ve ever wanted horror to be. Clever but not pretentious, entertaining, eerie, desperately mysterious. I‘ll be rereading this a lot of times I think.

puzzledbooks Loved this book. Still searching for something quite like it! 13mo
Reggie I totally think that guy killed those kids. When the main character talks to his lady friend on the force and she says a saying that the director always said. It made me think she was in his pocket and had a habit of making stuff go away. 13mo

Wow. This book has a hold on me like I haven‘t experienced for awhile. This is more than a novel. It feels like a transcendent cinematic experience - just like Cordova‘s films in the story. I was completely mesmerized reading this and as invested in the mystery as the ragtag investigative team. I find myself wondering about Hopper, McGrath, and Nora as if they are real friends I met in another life. That is the power of Pessl‘s storytelling. 5⭐️

I wanted to like this book more, but the casual racism and transphobia were hard to get past. I found the story to be dragging quite a bit (and almost abandoned this read) but the story was solid by the end enough I suppose. I had high expectations based on other reviews, but ultimately, I found this book largely tedious.

#NightFilm is a mistery thriller that really intrigued the reader.
The border between reality and superstition is so thin that I had to really think about the entire story to recognize what was true or not.

Not at all bad, but seven-hundred pages of “not bad” leaves...something to be desired.

Still, a lot of good takeaways and insights, and it does get genuinely riveting for some time toward the end. It‘s exceptional the way Pessl makes it feel like the narrator is in a film of the director he‘s investigating‘s. I love cinema too, so this novel was practically a sure thing for me.

Reggie Yeah, when the professor tells you all the signs of a Cordova film you start trying to think back what has happened that matched them! 2y

I loved the Cordova character-The way he was written made me wanna run out and find his banned films! The author did a good job of writing him so that like the other characters in the book you also became obsessed. The ending was a surprise but fitting
