I knew I would love and feel chastised by this book. I was right. In discussing breaking the “split infinitive” rule, Dreyer shares a bit about Raymond Chandler.

This is a book to spend time with. It‘s such a thin book I think it would be easy to grab it for something to kill time on a flight, but if a person lives in the book with a sense of the timing of the book, they‘re going to get more out of it.
Precisely written, beautiful Bildungsroman that speaks to the immigrant experience through the eyes of a first generation immigrant also dealing with the challenges of teen experiences. Must read.
I‘ve been sick so this is my first book I‘m picking up for 2020. The only other book of hers I‘ve read is “An Exact Replica of a Figment of My Imagination” which shredded me and also brought about growth in me that things are not always what they seem. Looking forward to Bowlaway!
I‘ve barely dipped into this, but I feel it‘s going to be a HIT. I‘m making tons of margin notes. There are so many wonderful touches that could be missed on a breezy read. I think there should be a movement of making Derek Tenzler: Unwanted t-shirts. #thefemalepersuasion #megwolitzer
Can‘t do it. Wish I could. It reminds me of the middle section (the Las Vegas section) of The Goldfinch. I stuck with The Goldfinch and was glad I did, but my TBR stack is too big to spend time being miserable while reading. If anyone can give a reason to keep going, I might give it another shot.
Late start to @DeweysReadathon but excited to dive in!
Matilda was published when I was 16 and past the Roald Dahl stage. I am so glad I picked it up. I have many friends who are younger than I am who rave about Matilda and now I know why.
This is a five star nugget of a book. I read it in an afternoon and enjoyed every word. Norwich writes for a female protagonist very well. I‘ll miss spending time with Mrs. Brown.
This sequel must be read. I so enjoyed spending another year with Hendrik. Perfect blend of humor, friendship, politics, and elder care in the Netherlands (not as great as I‘d presumed). Must read.
Wonderful book about friendship and forgiveness. Also a great lesson in the history of the Korean island of Jeju. It‘s a painful book to read, but worth every heartbreak.
A novel that is packed with stereotypes. I read the whole book praying for that surprise twist I had been promised, but that twist was “meh.” I hate rating books as “Pan,” but I have to here. (If you don‘t see the twist at the end of Part I coming at you like a freight train, I can‘t help you.)
I have heard rave reviews of this by friends. Excited to get my little paws on it
This is not a book with a lot of words. I read it thoroughly in about an hour. That said, its length means I can read it over and over again. It will sit on my writer‘s desk forever, for instant inspiration. It includes Neil‘s commencement speech - slightly modified. Amazing.
I enjoyed Part One a fair bit, but I knew the resolution thirty pages in. It‘s a first novel and, despite my disappointment, I will check our more as they come. I did enjoy the philosophy and mythology she incorporated.
This is one where the book was perfectly adequate and no more. It could have used some more editing and the benefit of having a fluid timeline rather than jumping around so much. J.D.‘s mother comes off as completely unsympathetic in part because J.D. clumps all of the bad stories together. To be clear, his mother was a mess, no doubt, but something about the narrative style was abrasive to me. I did learn about hillbilly life and am glad.
Five star book. I learned a great deal of history while being completely subsumed by the characters and the poetry of the writing.
Two kitties ready to help me read 1126 pages of London. #kittiensoflitsy #cats #kitties #london# historicalfiction
Not my typical reading reading but very good. Will read more of the series.
I feel drained, depleted, but still loved the book. Beautifully written. I knew nothing of the communist revolution in Calcutta and now want to read more about that. The ending of the novel is hard. Brace yourself.
This might be helpful to some who want to cozy up their living style, but most of it rang as preachy and a lot of it (work times, our government and its priorities) a tiny book can‘t change for me. I got my $1.99‘s worth out of it.
...just as it was useless to save a single earring when the other half of the pair was lost.
