This is probably one of my favorite classics, and I mean I CANT with this edition. My love language is buying me beautiful books.

“There is no doubt that genius lasts longer than beauty. That accounts for the fact that we all take such pains to over-educate ourselves. In the wild struggle for existence, we want to have something that endures, and so we fill our minds with rubbish and facts, in the silly hope of keeping our place.”

Well one thing is very clear: V. E. Schwab is a beautiful writer. The prose of this story flowed so effortlessly and the story is a truly unique romance. I won‘t spoil anything for those who haven‘t read it, but for those who have, all I will say is that I really love clever girls.

In this third book the girls are thrown way way back in time. There‘s ancient life, unknown beasts, and time holes that shoot out futuristic objects. How are they going to get out of this one? That‘s the same question I ask myself after each book. I‘m so impressed by this fictional (s)quad. #graphicnovel

Mehso-so

Okay, so this one is hiiiighly rated on Goodreads and with my network of book lovers, but I have to admit it felt sort of meh to me. I know Huxley was kind of the first, but it felt like I‘ve read this story before. It‘s a fascinating concept, but I didn‘t find myself getting really excited to read this. So I‘m only giving it a so-so.

I think Rupi is incredibly talented and I adore her work, but this book didn‘t land with me as strongly as her other books of #poetry. I‘m noticing a trend in modern poetry where the need for something to be short and shareable makes it feel to me like vague sub-tweets. That‘s sort of what this collection felt like to me. But there were still some really moving pieces!

I‘m currently in the middle of listening to American Psycho on #audiobook and I have to say... I‘m extremely bored! I understand the point Bret Easton Ellis is trying to make, but I don‘t want to listen to this guy detail his dinner plans, his fashion choices, or his skincare routine *again.* Narcissism is incredibly dull.

Vansa Oh I couldn't agree more. You get the point after a few chapters. Bret Ellis likes to hit his readers over the head multiple times with the book equivalent of a hammer. It goes on and on, in the same vein. It could have been a novella and been a lot more powerful! 4y

You know what, Chimamanda? You‘re right.
I remember when I was early in my college schooling I had a pop culture teacher survey his class and asked everyone to raise their hand if they were a feminist. Maybe 10 people did. Then he defined it. “It means you believe men and women should be equal. It‘s that simple.” And he surveyed again. The entire class raised their hands.
This is a short little read full of good words.

Such an imaginative and powerful book! I think I need to read more books like this in my life.

Buechersuechtling Silly question but is this the book they took as inspiration for the film with the same title❓ I saw it at the cinema and must admit that I had problems understanding certain aspects of it. Since that time I once in a while wonder if I should try and read the book. Is it worth it or is it as complex and here and there are complicated and confusing as the film has been❓ 5y
KendallHershey @Buechersuechtling not a silly question at all! I had the same issue with the movie, I found myself terribly confused. It is based off of this book, but I found the book more clear cut. Of course there‘s still some aspect of - wait what‘s going on? Hahaha but I still loved the book! Definitely not as complex as the movie in my opinion. 5y
Zoes_Human @Buechersuechtling I agree with Kendall. I loved the book, but I didn't like the movie for several reasons. One of which was that I felt it would have been completely confusing if I hadn't come to it with the full knowledge of the book. 5y
