Outlander | Diana Gabaldon
Claire Randall is leading a double life. She has a husband in one century, and a lover in another...In 1945, Claire Randall, a former combat nurse, is back from the war and reunited with her husband on a second honeymoonwhen she innocently touches a boulder in one of the ancient stone circles that dot the British Isles. Suddenly she is a Sassenachan "outlander"in a Scotland torn by war and raiding border clans in the year of our Lord...1743.Hurled back in time by forces she cannot understand, Claire's destiny in soon inextricably intertwined with Clan MacKenzie and the forbidden Castle Leoch. She is catapulted without warning into the intrigues of lairds and spies that may threaten her life ...and shatter her heart. For here, James Fraser, a gallant young Scots warrior, shows her a passion so fierce and a love so absolute that Claire becomes a woman torn between fidelity and desire...and between two vastly different men in two irreconcilable lives. From the Trade Paperback edition.

Who got a chance to watch the show?! They did a fantastic job! Poor Marsali.. I want to tan Fergus‘s hide! 😡 I‘m not sure how I feel about Claire self medicating at the end, doesn‘t seem very in character. But I think the Christie‘s were casted perfectly. What did y‘all think about it?!?

Loved this! As someone who entered the Outlander world through the show first (and watched the series several times 😬), I risked not liking the book as much because I don‘t like changing plots or characters I already have in my mind. Not a problem with this! I welcomed every difference, and the writing was excellent - beautifully descriptive but not so complex as to slow it down. Can‘t wait to read the next one!

CuriousG Dragonfly in Amber is my favourite of the series - hope you love it too! 3mo

#JANUARY2022 recap has me firmly planted in a re-read of Outlander, having recently binged the Netflix Series. And this time so far this reads differently. And has actually given me an interesting evaluation of myself, as I have changed and adapted through the years… I even understand more the 🔺fate of Claire‘s life. And the pressure. #outlander continues. #historialfiction #romance #timetravel 📚❤️

BooksNBowls I‘ve been trying to make it through Drums for 2 months now lol you make me feel bad 😅 3mo
aa_guer2021 @BooksNBowls don‘t feel bad at all. The only way I have been able to do this is because I focused exclusively on this series, and read only that one book at a time. And I am fast reader, when motivated to be, and since I just saw the show, a lot of things are fresh in my mind. If I was distracted, or had less time, it would take me a lot longer. I committed to getting through them, as I feel ready. 🥲 3mo
BooksNBowls @aa_guer2021 yeah I‘ve taken a month hiatus from it but I think I‘ll pick it back up next month and try to finish. I‘m about 45% through it. I just needed a little break. I can‘t wait to get to the books they haven‘t came out with yet on tv (edited) 3mo

3.5 stars. Good historical fiction about a woman who time travels to 1743 Scotland. I enjoyed the historical details about clothes, weapons, laundry, laws, etc. Written 30 years ago, and some of the man/woman dynamics and choices by Claire, the protagonist, are a little hard to swallow, but still an engaging love story. Contains torture but not as much as, say, that GOT show.

1. I‘m into genealogy so I‘d like to go back in time to meet my ancestors, starting with my grandmother who died when Mom @Doll8455 was young. She was 100% Swiss, brilliant, spoke 5 languages. I‘d like to meet Mom‘s brother, Fox, who died in a tragic accident a few years later. And I‘d love to meet the loads of notable ancestors. Then I‘d jump forward to see if I have any great great grandkids!

I really enjoyed this book. It has romance, Scotish history and family lineages, drama, adventure and a little bit of fantasy. Really, it has everything a reader would want in a book. Such a fast-paced book, and I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the series.

tokorowilliamwallace I had a college friend I reconnected with for the first time in probably almost 10 years recommend Outlander to me, so I bought two volumes of the saga and will get into it eventually (probably not exactly in order 😬)! I'm intrigued not only in how she characterizes her smut, but also mostly in how she handles the historical context and detail in writing so thoroughly. She also rec'd Terry Goodkind's Sword of Truth saga, which I have begun. 4mo
TheatreSpaz Gabaldon's historical research SEEMS to be pretty spot on. I live near one of the settings in her books and it's so fun to connect state historical sites to her stories. My favorite part of the books, though, is the medical treatment Claire dispenses in the 18th c with her 20th c knowledge. It's fascinating reading about how she makes do without antibiotics and other modern pharmaceuticals. 4mo

"Outlander" is extremely well written and the author tells her story well. However, there were parts of the story that I felt unneeded and while I understand some of the commentary was to show the times, I felt Gabaldon was toeing a line I did not care for.

I read the series a couple of years ago and got sick of all the new names/characters. So I started talking notes and even before finishing the series, I knew I'd need to read it again. So here I am rereading and taking notes. I bought this box to use as a bibliography before goodreads existed. The first cards are books I still need to add to my READ list. The ABC section is all #Outlander notes. Does anyone else do this?

eeclayton I did with Doctor Zhivago! There were so many names. 9mo
mandarchy @eeclayton that's good to know! On my list of reasons I wish I could add notes to my TBR list on goodreads: who recommended the book to me and so and so said get ready to take notes. 9mo
Curiouser_and_curiouser @eeclayton @mandarchy How should one take notes on characters in a book? I use a notebook but I find if I leave space for a character that may need plenty of room I don't end up filling in the space, then I run out of space for a character who needs more. I guess removable pages might work best. Other than a file deck like this one, what other suggestions would you have for taking notes simply and easily, no matter how long or short the notes are? 9mo
See All 9 Comments
mandarchy @Curiouser_and_curiouser that's a good question. It depends on the book. For a stand alone, I might use a page in my journal and list characters in chronological order (when they appear in the story). Sometimes I fold a single sheet of paper and it's a bookmark, too. But with a series this size, file cards are the way to go. 9mo
eeclayton @mandarchy @Curiouser_and_curiouser For Zhivago I used single sheets (ended up using 3) and added the name whenever a new character appeared together with some basic info, like age, occupation, who they were related to, and which chapter I first met them in. This was no more than 2 lines for each person, and I hardly ever added to them, I just needed the quick reminder when the character reappeared. 9mo
Curiouser_and_curiouser @eeclayton oh wonderful. Yes, I probably need to do something like that. I also end up writing too much, but the details you've mentioned sound perfect. I will give that a go next time. Thanks you again 🌻 9mo
Curiouser_and_curiouser @mandarchy that sounds great! Thank you for your time in explaining this technique. I may not staple them but perhaps keep the pages together another way, incase I'd like to add something further down the track. But yes, this idea has opened up all sorts of options in my mind. The older I get the narrower my mind becomes! I must give it a workout to help me think more laterally as I age 😊 9mo
Curiouser_and_curiouser @mandarchy oh yeah, I plan to read the Outlander collection in the near future, so I'll need to plan ahead and get myself some sort of filing system like you've done. Thanks again! 9mo
mandarchy @Curiouser_and_curiouser After I started taking notes, I found out that everything is online - I reinvented the wheel and decided to keep building it anyway. I think note taking is a great reader skill. Some of us need to take more notes than others. Have fun! 9mo

The last time I read Outlander was in 2013/2014, and I‘ve been meaning to reread since then but never got around to it until the #outlanderreadalong was announced by Random House. I‘ve managed to find some of the peace I‘ve been looking for since I started retreading. I know what happens but it‘s still as exciting as the first time, and I‘ve managed to catch details that I didn‘t notice nor realize were foreshadowing events in the upcoming books.
