Outlander
Outlander | Diana Gabaldon
Claire Randall is leading a double life. She has a husband in one century, and a lover in another...In 1945, Claire Randall, a former combat nurse, is back from the war and reunited with her husband on a second honeymoonwhen she innocently touches a boulder in one of the ancient stone circles that dot the British Isles. Suddenly she is a Sassenachan "outlander"in a Scotland torn by war and raiding border clans in the year of our Lord...1743.Hurled back in time by forces she cannot understand, Claire's destiny in soon inextricably intertwined with Clan MacKenzie and the forbidden Castle Leoch. She is catapulted without warning into the intrigues of lairds and spies that may threaten her life ...and shatter her heart. For here, James Fraser, a gallant young Scots warrior, shows her a passion so fierce and a love so absolute that Claire becomes a woman torn between fidelity and desire...and between two vastly different men in two irreconcilable lives. From the Trade Paperback edition.

At the book club meetings in #NYC yesterday, #2030SomethingLongReadsBookClub members pow-wowed and gave suggestions for our June and August 2020 selections (since that club meets every other month) 😁😎. They chose Outlander and A Game of Thrones with outstanding enthusiasm 😊. They want to do both entire series 😂👏🏻. Looks like I‘ll finally be getting to two series that have been on my #TBR forever 😌. What do you think of both?

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Loved Game of Thrones (wish he‘d finish writing them though), Outlander was a eh for me, though everyone else I know loved it. 🤷‍♀️ 3w
Andrew65 With those tones some big reading ahead of you! Loved The Game of Thrones Series, although still got one to read. Read and really enjoyed Outlander some years ago, but yet to continue with the series. 3w
Caterina I don't know if you do audiobooks, but the narrator for Outlander is fantastic! Only reason I finished the book really. There was an incident that really soured the whole book for me, and I couldn't get past it. 3w

inthegreensandblues Outlander is one of my favorite series. I love the last few books the best, can't wait for the next. 3w
Tianarose Loved both series! Am currently re-reading outlander (on “drums of autumn”) 3w
JacqMac I love Outlander. Still working my way through the series. I‘m not touching Game of Thrones until he finishes it. I just couldn‘t stand it if it never has an ending. 3w
Bklover Game of Thrones should be fun! I‘m wanting to read it as well. On the other hand, I have tried no less than 5 times to read the first volume of Outlander and I haven‘t made it past the first 200 pages yet. Let me know if you like it! If you do, I‘ll try it again!! 2w

Outlander: A Novel | Diana Gabaldon

So this stood out to me: on page 831, Jamie told Claire that Randall “used me again-hard. And he kept on saying it: ‘Tell me that you love me, Alex. Say that you love me.‘” So did Randall rape his brother at some point too? Or have an incestuous love for him? Some people think it was Alex MacGregor since he hung himself, but I think it has to mean Alex Randall since Claire thinks back to the genealogical chart and remembers his brothers‘ name.

ShyBookOwl Gorgeous! Well done. Looks like the technique must use a lot of front post stitches? Absolutely beautiful work 😍 1mo
Lauredhel @ShyBookOwl yes, she's very tricksy! You do an abstract pattern of sc and BLO sc, then you work long angled stitches into some of the unworked front loops and popcorns into others, and there are dcs into skipped stitches two rows ago behind your work... (edited) 1mo

ShyBookOwl @Lauredhel oh wow! That sounds like a really fun challenge! When I was first learning, I followed a YouTube channel with a 365 days of granny squares playlist, and after just over 100, I had learned and mastered so many techniques. I love a good square challenge lol 1mo

I first read this book in 1991. I fell in love with James Alexander Malcolm MacKenzie Fraser and have been hooked on every book Herself (fan nickname for Diana Gabaldon) has written since then. In the down times when waiting for the next book, I re read the entire series.. Sometimes I read just the parts I love most.. Either way it's been an awesome world to be a part of and can't wait to see the next chapter.

Bklover Isn‘t it comforting when you have a series you can go back to again and again?! 3mo

This book infuriated me! It wasn‘t the story line or the setting or the characters that bothered me. I quite liked most of those. It was the terrible editing job that had me ranting & cursing & almost not completing the book. Why any editor anywhere would push a book through with such gratuitous & graphic descriptions of violence is beyond me. They could have cut 50 pages by not describing torture/rape in minute detail. #unpopularopinion

That, was a long book. I would say, for the first 600 pages I was questioning why I was bothering, then it gets very intense towards the end and all the slow character building pays off and you're fully invested in what is going to happen and can't put it down until it's through!
Given it's weak start (IMO) and strong end, I'm going to give it a middling 3 stars. I don't plan to read the other books or watch the series.

slategreyskies Three stars from me too. I haven‘t yet decided if I‘ll try watching the show, but I know I won‘t read the other books yet. I need a break from all that intensity! 3mo

It took me FOREVER to get through this book! It‘s a chunkster! I thought the time travel premise was interesting but expected more traveling between the two time periods. There was also a lot more sex and graphic violence than I anticipated. I doubt I will continue with this series. #notforme

Curiouser_and_curiouser I'm halfway through but I had to take a break as I felt it was dragging. It also felt like it took me ages to just get through the first half but unfortunately I've seen the first 2 seasons of the series so I'm constantly comparing the book to the series and thinking that the series is a lot more dramatic and raunchy infact when compared to the book, which doesn't seem nearly as exciting when compared. I hope to finish it someday 4mo

Curiouser_and_curiouser @jenniferajanes @ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled yes, I guess we missed the book boat years ago before the series was made. I have quite a few friends who read the all the books many years ago and loved them, I think it was called The Cross and the Switchblade back then. We might have been a bit spoilt with Jamie on the screen to bother with the books now, lol. I think I'd like to try it again though, but at another time, maybe when I'm older & slower 😉 4mo
