Outlander | Diana Gabaldon
Claire Randall is leading a double life. She has a husband in one century, and a lover in another...In 1945, Claire Randall, a former combat nurse, is back from the war and reunited with her husband on a second honeymoonwhen she innocently touches a boulder in one of the ancient stone circles that dot the British Isles. Suddenly she is a Sassenachan "outlander"in a Scotland torn by war and raiding border clans in the year of our Lord...1743.Hurled back in time by forces she cannot understand, Claire's destiny in soon inextricably intertwined with Clan MacKenzie and the forbidden Castle Leoch. She is catapulted without warning into the intrigues of lairds and spies that may threaten her life ...and shatter her heart. For here, James Fraser, a gallant young Scots warrior, shows her a passion so fierce and a love so absolute that Claire becomes a woman torn between fidelity and desire...and between two vastly different men in two irreconcilable lives. From the Trade Paperback edition.

Upon reading Sheerhan's lyrics, I interpreted “shivers“ in a (dare I say) emotionally sexy way. My two favorite characters who give each other the shivers in all 10 books is none other than Jamie and Claire Fraser. 😍

I made the mistake of buying books 1-4, and I hated it. Claire is forced into marriage, and there was no love anywhere. This isn‘t romance fiction. It‘s one sad thing after another. They executed a child for stealing, and after more misery, I decided on returning the books. It‘s too sad, so I couldn‘t finish the book.

Airamas But the series is so wonderful. I don‘t want to add any spoilers but the books get so much better. Claire ends up loving Jamie and will do anything for him. This series is on my to be read again, one of my absolute favorites 2mo

In May 2019 I went on a cruise in Northern Europe, starting with four stops in Scotland. At three of those stops, we were either greeted or farewelled by pipers on the dock. These folks played for us for at least fifteen minutes at Invergordon.

That day we also went to Cawdor Castle, where a lone piper in the garden played the infectious Skye Boat Song (AKA the Outlander song).

Magpiegem I live on the English coast but we have a bagpiper that walks up and down one of our local beaches playing. I assume because he‘s not allowed to practice at home! On the right day there‘s something quite atmospheric about his music drifting out to see. It reminds me of bedknobs and broomsticks 3mo
Susanita @Magpiegem That‘s so cool! I used to work at a small military post in Washington DC. One of my coworkers used to see a piper on the grounds, practicing for funerals at Arlington Cemetery. 3mo

BooksNBowls @persephone1408 it‘s taken 20+ years for 10 books lol I think she‘s trying to hurry because the tv show is ending and they are doing a prequel show now. Not sure how that‘s gonna go since she hasn‘t even wrote the prequel yet lol 4mo

BooksNBowls @persephone1408 season 8 will be the last season 😭😭😭 I believe we see him grown in the next season but im not sure. persephone1408 @BooksNBowls I assumed, since they only did half of the book last season, that they would do the other half of that book. Grown William doesnt show up until the next one...but they do change some things. So maybe. 4mo

Not quite what I was expecting from the description I was expecting a romance in the style of Good Night Sweetheart where there was actually some difficulty choosing between lovers and between times but this was not that at all.

Also what are we supposed to think of men? It felt like every other man was a rapist. There is rape, attempted rape and then male rape just to top things off and then throw in a side of torture just for fun.

majkia I hated that book and refuse to read the rest of the series. 8mo

Bailedbailed

The author advertises this as a romance fiction novel, but there is more inappropriate sex stuff than romance. Claire has lots of panic attacks about r*** thatmakes the book too hard to read. My friends say to give this book up for real romance books that don‘t have unwanted sexual content. There was also a scene where a child got mutilated as corperal punishment for stealing. I should have bailed on this book sooner.

Finishing this book felt like an accomplishment, it was good and kept me engaged, but it just kept going! The romance was sweet for the most part. While being historically accurate, it is not what we may see today after "me too". The historical politics and time travel aspects were interesting and fun also. I enjoyed it and I will continue on with the series. ✨️

⭐⭐⭐⭐ I was not expecting to like this book as much as I did. Plus I have no idea why because the subject matter is NOT cozy (trigger warnings for rape and attempted rape), but I felt this whole cozy atmospheric vibe going while I read...like I was wrapped up in a plaid blanket in front of a fireplace, sipping coffee while a light misty rain falls outside. 🤷

The plot is episodic, very Quixote-esque. It‘s one damn thing after another, and a lot of traipsing from place to place to escape whatever trouble they‘ve gotten themselves into. They still manage to make time for plenty of sex, though, naturally. It‘s not a closed door romance, but the door isn‘t wide-open either – it certainly wasn‘t as steamy as I was expecting. I've never watched the show and I put off reading this for years because I am not a fan of romance heavy stories.

I found myself really enjoying the historical aspects of this story. The descriptions of the setting were some of my favorite parts. I liked a lot of the characters and overall the writing was well-done. However, the dynamics between Jamie and Claire felt too "Insta-love" and controlling for me.

As someone who entered the Outlander world through the show first (and watched the series several times 😬), I risked not liking the book as much because I don‘t like changing plots or characters I already have in my mind. #JANUARY2022 recap has me firmly planted in a re-read of Outlander, having recently binged the Netflix Series. And this time so far this reads differently. And has actually given me an interesting evaluation of myself, as I have changed and adapted through the years… I even understand more the 🔺fate of Claire‘s life. And the pressure. #outlander continues. #historialfiction #romance #timetravel 📚❤️

BooksNBowls I‘ve been trying to make it through Drums for 2 months now lol you make me feel bad 😅 1y
aa_guer2021 @BooksNBowls don‘t feel bad at all. The only way I have been able to do this is because I focused exclusively on this series, and read only that one book at a time. 3.5 stars. Good historical fiction about a woman who time travels to 1743 Scotland. I enjoyed the historical details about clothes, weapons, laundry, laws, etc. Written 30 years ago, and some of the man/woman dynamics and choices by Claire, the protagonist, are a little hard to swallow, but still an engaging love story. Contains torture but not as much as, say, that GOT show.
