I loved The Subtle Knife and have just started rereading The Amber Spyglass. The feels are strong. 😭

Despite being quite a short book, it's incredibly powerful and made me tear up near the end. It's profound and very moving, and Charlie Gordon is a character who'll stick in my mind for a while. 4⭐️/5

ReadingColumn Classic read. I read this in high school (a long time ago). 7y

I liked the writing very much, but this book is a real 'slow burn' type and I didn't enjoy it as much as I'd hoped until the last quarter or so of the story. I usually need characters I can really feel for, but for most of the book I felt quite detached from them. 3⭐️/5

NadinetheReader Yeah it can be quite frustrating to read a book when the characters are not that complex😔 8y

Speaker for the Dead | Orson Scott Card

Despite a slow start and names that are kind of difficult to grasp at first, I ended up really loving this! It is SO different from Ender's Game, but I loved it anyway - I thought the science/anthropology side was fascinating and I loved the new characters by the end. I would recommend this if you like deep and philosophical sci-fi. 5⭐️/5

Wasn't expecting this to be like it is, but I'm enjoying it more now I've got to grips with the new characters!

Adored this reread! Mac is still learning and being awesome, and the chemistry between her and Barrons really heats up. LOVED it! 4⭐️/5

Absolutely beautiful prose, but I didn't really get into the story. It is perhaps a book I'll like better if I reread it though (which I'm hoping will be the same case for The Great Gatsby!). 3⭐️/5

An enjoyable conclusion to this fun YA series! I think Meyer's strengths were in the retellings themselves (which I think improved with each book) and the dynamics between the characters. 4⭐️/5

Very impressive debut from Emma Cline! Loved her writing. Despite the familiar and horrifying plot (the book is based on the Manson case), I was still gripped by Evie's story. 4⭐️/5

I thought the first few chapters were boring, but the pace soon picked up and I ended up finding it quite a page-turner! An enjoyable thriller, but I don't understand why there was so much hype around it. 4⭐️/5

Still my favourite classic! So much more readable than I ever expected of a classic, and Jane is such a strong and independent character. 5⭐️/5!

I'd sum this up as 'charming, but unoriginal'. The story reminded me of the Narnia films in places, which meant the story lacked originality. However, the illustrations were stunning, and it was an easy book to read. 3⭐️/5

Feeling rather charmed by this story so far, but why is the book so long?! And it's part of a trilogy... Part of me feels like it's going to drag after a while. How stunning are the illustrations though (even in black and white!)? 😍

Although this was a raw and powerful story about the aftermath of rape, the book fell short of the hype for me. I found the timelines a bit confusing, and had trouble properly connecting with the characters. 3⭐️/5

ns510reads Oh always a shame when that happens isn't it?! It makes such a big difference to me, feeling connected to the characters or not 8y
bookplaits @ns510reads oh, absolutely! A book could have average writing, but if I fall in love with the characters, I'll most likely end up loving the book. 😄 8y

Cress | Marissa Meyer

Almost 100 pages in and I still love Scarlet and Wolf. 🙊 Not that keen on Cress yet, but perhaps I'll warm to her later on in the book!

BookBerries Oh I hope you do!! I love Scarlet too and Cress is just ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ 8y
bookplaits @BookBerries I think I'm just finding Cress a bit too 'swoony' over Thorne, haha! But it's still a fun (and quick!) read 😄 8y
BookBerries Hahaha She really is! But I like that one of the girls is like that hahaha 8y

Disappointed by this. It took a turn that I just didn't like and ended up being more than a simple kidnapping story. I think I would have preferred it if it had been just a kidnapping story! However, the perspectives were well done, and I was interested to see what happens to the girl. Rating: 3⭐️/5
