255 posts | 218 read | 4 reading | 54 to read
Oz, the Great Wizard! The very name of L. Frank Baum's magical character conjures a world where diminutive munchkins live and work, wicked witches run riot, and the mighty Oz himself rules over an Emerald City reached by a yellow brick road. The Wizard of Oz: The First Five Novels is your passport to this marvelous realm and wonders that have enchanted readers young and old for more than a century. Lavishly illustrated by W. W. Denslow and John R. Neill, this volume includes The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, The Marvelous Land of Oz, Ozma of Oz, Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz and The Road to Oz.

Eggs Great triple👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻I‘m an Oz fan from the get go! All my life I wanted to see those ruby slippers and finally I did at the age of 60 at the Smithsonian👠👠 6d
rubyslippersreads @Eggs I‘ve seen them in person twice; both times I cried. @BookieMary also took me to see Dorothy‘s dress when it was on display for auction. (No, I didn‘t buy it. 😊) 6d
rubyslippersreads @LibrarianRyan That‘s something I‘ve never seen, though I have seen an unsigned first. 😊🌈 6d
LibrarianRyan @rubyslippersreads They were given to our library years ago. I don't think the entire series is signed but many are. I would grab pictures, but they are locked on display and I don't have keys. 6d

It recently occurred to me that I had never read this book. (I know.) So, I rectified that! It was a fun listen, though I‘m a little surprised at the amount of violence and talk of killing others in a children‘s book. I‘m not sure how this would be received in a new book nowadays.

vivastory I only read it this year, too. I've heard the series gets stranger & stranger 2w
Hooked_on_books @vivastory Huh. That almost makes me want to continue. It‘s funny with the violence thing—older Disney movies are way more violent. I think we tolerated a lot more targeted at kids in the past than we do now. 2w

I haven‘t read the tagged book, but I was scared a little of this movie when I was a kid & still don‘t like it. My sister loves it. I wasn‘t a fan of the flying monkeys or the Wicked Witch. The Scarecrow is sweet and the only one that came to mind for this prompt. I do love Wicked though. #scarathlon #chillingphotochallenge @Clwojick #teamslaughter

Daisey I never liked this movie either, and I keep telling myself I should probably watch it again now to see what I think. 3w

Hubby and I were trying to explain this to our kids tonight. They seriously have no concept of it at all. I told them how my mom would mark on the calendar the day every year that The Wizard of Oz would come on and we'd mark off the days. Then we had to sit down at that time and watch it WITH commercials! They thought we were kidding at first. I was 11 yrs old before we got our first VCR 🤪

CarolynM Yes, it's hard to believe now isn't it? I remember the anguish of going on holiday and having to miss my favourite shows! 3mo

Louise My mom and I we‘re talking about this recently and also that we‘d wait for the Friday Night Movie and just hope it was a good one. Just about the whole country watched certain prime time shows because there was less choice back then. Remember the summer when the whole country was asking, “Who shot J.R.?” 😂 (edited) 3mo
MamaGina Those were the days!🎶It amazes me that I grew up in a rural area where rabbit ears got us 2 channels and now I have access to thousands of options on a device I hold in my hand! 🤓 3mo
toofondofbooks @Louise I certainly do! We watched Dallas and Dynasty religiously lol 3mo
toofondofbooks @MamaGina me too! We got ABC, CBS, PBS and every now and then on a clear day NBC would tune in a little bit lol. But we only had one TV and watched whatever my parents watched if they'd let us and a lot of times I think that was just so they could use us as the remote 🤣 My kids have no idea lol 3mo
toofondofbooks @CarolynM or heaven forbid the power went out or *gasp* the President have an address 😆 3mo
Louise Remember having to nominate someone to stand and hold the antenna just right to get a clear picture? And if they dared to let go, it would go fuzzy again! 😂 (edited) 3mo

For the #Hr30challenge in the #24in48 #readathon My entry is a mix of MG books I adored as a child(The Oz series, Toms Midnight Garden, Enid Blyton,The Poky Little Puppy), new MG like The Tea Dragon Society & the Disney set that I collected from my local paper & in the lower left corner, Bookworm, a memoir about childhood reading that got me right in the feels. And my beautiful granddaughter in the middle, who‘s already a reader like her nanna!♥️

Tera0707 My mom used to read The Poky Little Puppy to me all the time! I love that book ☺️ 4mo

I‘ve now read 2 twists on this story (Wicked series and Dorothy Must Die series) so I think it might be time to read the original. Also book 3 in the Dorothy series isn‘t available at the moment so I have to wait for my hold.

LeahBergen It‘s amazing! Was it an old house (or was part of it old)? (edited) 5mo
Cinfhen It was originally built in 1929( I think) but we enclosed the “garage” which was originally a stable and made it a huge kitchen. It was/is a gorgeous house in terms of craftsmanship - all the moldings and wainscoting and fireplaces etc. The new owners did a complete gut job inside and it nearly broke my heart. It‘s now a white marble palace inside!!!! It‘s horrible 😭😭😭 it looks so sterile @LeahBergen (edited) 5mo

I hadn't read the book prior to now and I feel like I like it more than the movie which I'm surprised at because I love the movie. It feels more child appealing because dorothy is a child and while there are some graphic deaths it feels more for a kid than the movie did.
