Shout out to my favorite books of 2017! (Not pictured: Norse Mythology by Neil Gaiman, because it's on loan, as all good books should be) What were your favorites? I need new recs for 2018! #topfive2017 #bestbooks #bestbooks2017

Star Wars: Ahsoka | E. K. Johnston

Trying to encourage my non-reader little cousins by baiting them with a character they love from TV. Hoping Star Wars will be their gateway book. Think it'll work?

GrilledCheeseSamurai I really liked it. It goes deep into lightsaber lore that hasn't been explained before. Very cool! 7y
Mdargusch 🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼 7y
Skyrimir It worked for my brother! 7y

Scurvygirl Ashoka is a great character! 7y
mg42 @Skyrimir I think it's going to work! First thing one of them said, "I'm going to do my next book report on this". It's above the reading level of their typical school books, so I'm thinking they'll rise up to the challenge. What did your brother end up reading next? 7y
mg42 @GrilledCheeseSamurai awesome. They absolutely love lightsaber lore, so I was glad I could pump them up for it by telling them that! 7y
Skyrimir I can‘t remember exactly what he read, he just made his way through every series he could find! I remember he liked the New Jedi Order and there was one that was about the x-wing pilots. After he read his way through Star Wars he read the Robotech books. Sadly, I think after Disney bought the franchise I think they declared a lot of the old books to not be part of the official canon anymore. I don‘t know if your reader would care or not! 7y
DivaDiane It might! It‘s a good follow on if they‘ve watched the Clone Wars in its entirety. Otherwise they may not know the motivations. They also need to know about Order 66. 7y

Everybody DOES love books, and independent bookstores like the Strand make it even easier to spread the reading bug. Nothing like a little bit of book tourism to fill out a vacation--fellow littens, what are some of your favorite bookstore destinations?

AmyG Definitely The Strand! Every year my husband and I go to Ann Arbor, MI for football. I make him take me to the Literati bookstore and buy me a gift. Great indie bookstore and one of my most favorites. 7y
mg42 That sounds fantastic. If I ever end up in Ann arbor that'll have to be a highlight. Personally, my all time favorite is the Last Bookstore in LA, it's nowhere near the size of the strand, but has charm for days 7y
CarolynM Hatchards on Piccadilly. Love that place so much 7y

BookishBelle Powell‘s in Portland! I went for a work conference this year and loved every minute of it! And Lemuria which is my hometown indie bookstore. 7y
mg42 @CarolynM @BookishBelle both are added to my list! And as luck would have it, Portland and London are both at the top of my travel list 😁 7y
Coco Myopic books in Chicago is great! 7y

The Wonder | Emma Donoghue

Pickpick

I marvel at books that can wring so much story out of such little plot. While the start is a slow roll, The Wonder was worth every bit of the investment. Elegant, heart-jerking, and un-put-downable in the second half.

Cinfhen Nice review! 7y
mg42 @Cinfhen thanks! It's always easier when it's a good book :) 7y
Cinfhen This was a mixed feeling book for me, I loved the writing but it sure took a long time to get to the heart of the story! Last 1/3 was very good 7y

Writing requires reading. If you told my high school self, he'd probably believe you, but he'd never believe that one day, he would willingly (and happily) read a primary source anthology to help further his goals. Maybe magic is more real than we think...

For anyone interested in the roots of magical myths here on earth, The Book of Magic is a fantastic, if slightly dense, starting point.

Bambolina_81 This sounds really interesting 😊 7y
mg42 @Bambolina_81 personally, I love it. It's definitely on the dry side, though. A ton of excerpts from various biblical texts and old Greek philosophers 🧠🧠👀 7y
Bambolina_81 @mg42 Sounds like a 'dipper' I loved reading all this theory in my uni days. I wish I could afford to go back 😂 7y
mg42 @Bambolina_81 well for the price of a paperback you'll feel like you never left! 🤣 7y
Bambolina_81 @mg42 sold! 😂 7y

Anyone who has read this trilogy knows why it's absolutely earthbreaking (heh); anyone who hasn't... well, there are several copies waiting for the taking.
