This spy classic (originally published as a novella by Graham Greene) is also a major film noir experience starring Joseph Cotton and Orson Welles. The suspense is crisply written a la Mickey Spillane's Mike Hammer. The reader follows Rollo Martin as he investigates the death of his best friend, Harry Lime, on the treacherous streets of WW2 Vienna, a city divided by war and corruption. Loved the book and movie! #BookedinTime @Cuilin

Cuilin Love Graham Greene. Looks like a great read. WWII ✅🎉 8mo

dabbe @AnnCrystal You gotta check this one out when you get a chance. 🤩 8mo
AnnCrystal I've seen the 1984 series, The New Mike Hammer. My mom introduced me to the show...good, although I tired quickly of his “I'm God's gift to women“ character attitude. He slept with or flirted with nearly every woman he came across...seriously?? 🙂 LOL. 8mo
kspenmoll I had no idea Greene wrote in this genre! 7mo
dabbe @AnnCrystal The one with Stacey Keach, right? I've seen those, too! He was like a James-Bond-I-can-get-any-woman type, wasn't he? 🤣🤣🤣 7mo
dabbe @kspenmoll I felt like that when I discovered that Raymond Chandler wrote the screenplay to DOUBLE INDEMNITY! 🤣🤣🤣 7mo
AnnCrystal @dabbe that's the one...😄. Although, I've got to admit that the guy's eyes are almost as lovely as Richard Burr's (from the TV Series, Perry Mason 1957–1966). (edited) 7mo
dabbe @AnnCrystal Oh wow. Perry Mason! Loved that show! 🤩 7mo
AnnCrystal @dabbe Right 👍. A true classic gem...we love that show too. (edited) 7mo
The_Penniless_Author I love this movie! Anton Karas's soundtrack is one of my all-time favorites. 7mo
dabbe @The_Penniless_Author The music was stupendous, wasn't it? I'll have to put the soundtrack on my playlist! 🤩 7mo

Mehso-so

A clean, witty banter-filled Hollywoodsy dialogue; quality cityscape atmosphere; nostalgic; campy but fun characterization; sprinkled with cynical, existential quips of pathos and observation. But I read this in a scattered fashion across 15 months; this is probably not the kind of pulp novel for such habitual reading methods. So it didn't make much of an impression and seemed very nebulous and vague as to what was going on. Come for vibes only.

Suspenseful. I could place myself right there in postwar Vienna along with Holly Martins and Harry Lime.

Final book of vacation and my first Graham Greene story ever. I blurbed this one as #booktomovie earlier this year, but it turns out it was written as a movie plot and then published later. I remember really liking the movie. The book moved right along and kept my attention.

And still the add a book feature is disabled 😣 so, correct title wrong author. But I'm loving these Amazon original short stories! The journey from having one child through trying for another; through tests and treatments, highs and lows, success and failures, and then the excitement, trials and tribulations of adoption ; the emotions and honesty packed into the short story will stay with you for quite a while!

In interesting short novel in that it was Greene's initial story for the movie The Third Man and developed alongside the screenplay. It's a bit rough - the actual narrator is Major Calloway which adds too many layers and thankfully Joseph Cotten objected to the awful name "Rollo" forcing a change to "Holly" in the movie (and Rollo and Harry appear to be English rather than American) - but the plot is excellent, Graham Greene takes on the noir.

balletbookworm This is one of my favorite movies (whee, Criterion Collection extras) and this is my "read a book that turned into a movie and compare" task for the @bookriot Reading Challenge. The movie is far superior, in my opinion, bc post-war Vienna itself is almost a character. Plus Orson Welles. Plus the zither score. Plus Valli. 7y
Dragon Loved the music and atmosphere of the 🎥, one of my all time favourite classics. I prefer it to Citizen Kane . Not my favourite Graham Green book I prefer End of the Affair. 7y

Short novella. Written as a script first for the now classic movie The Third Man. It does keep your interest and wondering. The POV moves from the narrator to the lead without much warning it made me go "who's talking here" a few times. But overall a solid noir/spy/mystery novella with all the trimmings.
