I am making an effort to catch up on missed #bookedintime @Cuilin and thought this middle grade fiction might be the way to do it. talk about a not just for children! 3 siblings a year into the blight take to the road after their mother doesn‘t come back from trying to find their dad after the death of their youngest sibling. Life on the road is incredibly hard and starvation is near, yet they also see food being exported. A shameful truth.

Cuilin Such a good book! It was a part of the primary curriculum in Ireland. I‘m not sure if it still is. 6d

A Quiet Flame: A Bernie Gunther Novel | Philip Kerr

so-so

This book was brutal. I can‘t say I enjoyed reading it, but I did learn a lot. It‘s a dual timeline novel, set in 1930s Berlin and 1950s Buenos Aires. Both locations were written with a strong sense of time and place, and the novel was well-researched, particularly the sections that took place in Argentina. ⬇️

julieclair (cont.) The main character was a famous police detective in Berlin before WWII, became an SS Officer during the war, and was one of the many Nazi officers who escaped to Argentina after the war. He continued his detective work there, investigating some truly horrific murders. Reading this book helped me realize that I‘m not a fan of hard-boiled detective stories. I much prefer cozy mysteries. 1mo

AlaMich I‘m a big fan of this series, though I think the books set only in ‘30s Berlin before and during the war are the more interesting. 1mo
