Finally finished this chunky book for #BookedInTime #SpanishCivilWar @Cuilin

When I saw last month‘s theme I wanted to re-read this book. I wasn‘t sure if my fond memories of it were because it was a good book or if it was the book I brought with me the first time I traveled without my kids. Sometimes just being able to think makes a book better.

Happy to say it held up and I was just as into this spy novel in translation as I was 11 years ago.

Tried to read this for #BookedinTime, but I have to throw in the towel. The narrative is plodding and pedantic and the dialogue comes across as lectures by the characters. Life is too short —moving on.

I did enjoy this book and enjoyed learning about the Spanish Civil War and Children of Morelia - but I did find the book never fully drew me in. I do wonder, when English isn't the first language of a book, if reading it in it's original language would have a bigger impact. The book cover also bothers me a bit because it's a book about three siblings finding their way. I still enjoyed the read and my heart breaks for all who lived through this!

Cuilin The two sides of the Spanish Civil War are the left side, known as the Republicans, was formed by the Spanish government together with unions, communists, anarchists, workers, and peasants. On the other side were the Nationalists, the rebel part of the army, the bourgeoisie, the landlords, and, generally, the upper classes. 1mo

ChaoticMissAdventures If anyone wants a nonfiction about this time Hemingway and Orwell's books are both great and semi- autobiographical but this one is the best I have read (and I have been obsessed with this time period since I was a teen exchange student in Spain)

I was reading this for #BookedInTime when the details started to seem familiar. Checked LibraryThing and turns out I had read it in 2014. According to my review I was just meh on it then too so I‘m moving on.
