Wall: Growing Up Behind the Iron Curtain
Wall: Growing Up Behind the Iron Curtain | Peter Sis
10 posts | 12 read | 29 to read
A NEW YORK TIMES BEST SELLER"I was born at the beginning of it all, on the Red side the Communist side of the Iron Curtain." Through annotated illustrations, journals, maps, and dreamscapes, Peter Sis shows what life was like for a child who loved to draw, proudly wore the red scarf of a Young Pioneer, stood guard at the giant statue of Stalin, and believed whatever he was told to believe. But adolescence brought questions. Cracks began to appear in the Iron Curtain, and news from the West slowly filtered into the country. Sis learned about beat poetry, rock 'n' roll, blue jeans, and Coca-Cola. He let his hair grow long, secretly read banned books, and joined a rock band. Then came the Prague Spring of 1968, and for a teenager who wanted to see the world and meet the Beatles, this was a magical time. It was short-lived, however, brought to a sudden and brutal end by the Soviet-led invasion. But this brief flowering had provided a glimpse of new possibilities creativity could be discouraged but not easily killed. By joining memory and history, Sis takes us on his extraordinary journey: from infant with paintbrush in hand to young man borne aloft by the wings of his art. This title has Common Core connections. The Wall is a 2007 New York Times Book Review Best Illustrated Book of the Year, a 2008 Caldecott Honor Book, a 2008 Bank Street - Best Children's Book of the Year, the winner of the 2008 Boston Globe - Horn Book Award for Nonfiction, and a nominee for the 2008 Eisner Award for Best Publication for Kids."

#JamminJune Day 17: When Peter Sis became a teenager, colourful elements from the West gradually trickled in from underneath the Iron Curtain. Tie-dyed love and the Beatles simply can not be ignored: this is the glorious period of long-haired, peace loving hippies and #RockNRoll. My review of this amazing picturebook memoir which I bought while I was in Prague: https://wp.me/pDlzr-88v

#AnglophileApril Day 3: #Wonderwall reminded me of Berlin which I visited twice, one with a friend in 2011, and the other time with husband and daughter in 2016. I always make time to visit the East Berlin Wall, which is, indeed filled with wonders. Pain and grief transmuted into beauty and remembrance.

Reviewsbylola I remember when a tiny piece of the Berlin Wall was displayed locally. I was a kid and we went to see it on a school field trip. It was very moving. 5y
Mdargusch I remember that too @Reviewsbylola ! This looks like a really powerful visit! 5y

Chrissyreadit @GatheringBooks there is a section at the Newseum in DC. I thought it was a very powerful exhibit. I can‘t imagine what it was like for people to be separated that way. 5y

Wow. This was a wonderful graphic memoir. Because of its size and shape, I mistook it for a picture book. But it‘s quite dense. Sis is an artist, and he grows up during the Soviet occupation of Czechoslovakia and was a teenager during The Prague Spring. So insightful and informative. Gorgeous illustrations!

This is a fascinating read. I've read the primary documents and the history textbooks but there's something distinctly different to read words of someone's story and analyze the drawings simultaneously. There is so much that can be said in drawings. This is also from the POV of a country that we seem to forget about when looking at the Cold War. I loved this

minkyb He is an amazing illustrator/author. 7y

Oh I love graphic novels! Especially non fiction political ones. They get so little mention but they hold so much weight

kalinichta I love seeing Littens professing love for graphic novels/comic books. I feel there's a similarity between comics and hip hop in that people who say that don't like them don't realize how wide-ranging they are and just haven't found the right title/artist yet. 7y
SassenachTheBookWizard @HippieChickHomeschool no. I've never heard of it but added to my TBR lol 7y

What a powerful book about a boy who grew up under communist rule in Czechoslovakia. Perfect for older children and adults.
