SHORTLISTED FOR THE COSTA FIRST NOVEL AWARD AND LONGLISTED FOR THE DESMOND ELLIOTT PRIZETo Arjan Banga, returning to the Black Country after the unexpected death of his father, his familye(tm)s corner shop represents everything he has tried to leave behind e" a lethargic pace of life, insular rituals and ways of thinking. But when his mother insists on keeping the shop open, he finds himself being dragged back, forced into big decisions about his imminent marriage back in London and uncovering the history of his broken family e" the elopement and mixed-race marriage of his aunt Surinder, the betrayals and loyalties, loves and regrets that have played out in the shop over more than fifty years.Taking inspiration from Arnold Bennette(tm)s classic novel The Old Wivese(tm) Tale, Marriage Material tells the story of three generations of a family through the prism of a Wolverhampton corner shop e" itself a microcosm of the South Asian experience in the country: a symbol of independence and integration, but also of darker realities. This is an epic tale of family, love, and politics, spanning the second half of the twentieth century, and the start of the twenty-first. Told with humour, tenderness and insight, it manages to be both a unique and urgent survey of modern Britain by one of Britaine(tm)s most promising young writers, and an ingenious reimagining of a classic work of fiction.

#bookreport

I would like to thank this book for giving me something else to think about this week. Turns out going into lockdown requires a whole lot of preparation (new router for work, filling Dads freezer, planning activities for kids) and like many of you I struggled to sleep this week, let alone read. But this book about two generations of a Punjabi family running a corner shop in England was just right. Interesting enough to keep me ⬇️

Centique ...engaged without getting too tense or dark. (Although it does have a moment) The cover makes it look like a romance - it isn‘t. It‘s a generational tale - more about the relationship between grown children and their parents all rooted in the core experience of owning the shop. We flip between Arjan in 2010 and Surinder in 1969 not really understanding their connection beyond the store until later on. Very enjoyable 🌟🌟🌟🌟 5y
GingerAntics This book sounds REALLY interesting. 5y
Centique @GingerAntics it was! And Arjan has some really sarcastic moments along the way which made me smile. 👍 5y

Cinfhen Sounds like a great distraction 💕Hope #HisElderliness is alright and you‘re all adjusting xx 5y
GingerAntics Oh I love some good sarcasm!!! 5y
Centique @Cinfhen we‘re good thanks Cindy. #hiselderliness is happy as long as he has books and food. Our supermarket has a process for prioritising the over 70s so he‘s getting that and I‘m disinfecting a bunch of books to leave on his doorstep 👍 (edited) 5y
Reggie Sounds great! 5y
batsy Yes, lockdown is a lot more work in quite a number of ways! It's strange to me that it's being "marketed" as leisure time but that's the crazy world we live in, I guess. Hope you're mostly settled and your dad is doing OK ? 5y

Loved it! Has a flavor of Brick Lane, which I also really enjoyed.

This week's #swimclassread is Marriage Material, a story about three generations who run a corner shop in Wolverhampton. I love the writing, the setting - the Sikh immigrant experience from 1960s to 2010. But I'm not fond of the title which somehow feels more frivolous than this book is.

read_diverse_books You sure know how to be productive. 😃 8y
RanaElizabeth That cover seems pretty frivolous too. Isn't the rule that if there feet/shoes on a cover that it's chick lit? 8y
RealLifeReading @read_diverse_books that's the only way I can read while looking after two little kids. Plus luckily I read fast 😂 8y
RealLifeReading @RanaElizabeth that is true. The shoes thing definitely. Hmm that would make for an interesting photo challenge post. Shoes on a cover 😀 8y

This might be one of my favorite books of the year -- it combines smart (and hilarious) commentary about South Asian culture with great characters and a story that pulls you in.

KarenaFagan I like the cover! 9y

LizzyNanney This reminds me of the song Nobody's Asian in the Movies from the Dr. Horrible commentary. 9y
