Why I Killed My Best Friend
Why I Killed My Best Friend | Amanda Michalopoulou
7 posts | 6 read | 5 to read
"Flawlessly translated, Amanda Michalopoulou's "Why I Killed My Best Friend" uses the backdrop of Greek politics, radical protests, and the art world to explore the dangers and joys that come with BFFs. Or, as the narrator puts it, 'odiodsamato, ' which translates roughly as 'frienemies.'"Gary Shteyngart"

This was my #FoodAndLit #Greece pick, and also my #DoubleSpin

I liked this but didn‘t love it. The book spanned a large period of time, and the friendship between Maria and Anna. Maria moved back to Greece from Africa, and Anna from France, and bonded over their unfamiliar surroundings and an interest in political movements. But Maria is often overshadowed by Anna‘s presence, and unsure of who she is without her.

#readaroundtheworld #greece Thanks to other Littens, I read two good ones for this month in Greece. This book has none of the descriptions of Nature but a lot of background on political movements and change in the 70s, 80s and early 90s as Greece comes out of a dictatorship. Yet the story is about the co-dependency of two Best Friends and their transitions through life. Sometimes the modernist structure is confusing but overall hits the mark

#readaroundtheworld #greece They called it Mediterranean food but I am claiming it for Greece. I hope the book is as good as the food was.

Loved this. Lively, complex, honest. A juicy capture of Athens in the 1970s-90s. It's been more than a month since I finished the novel and I keep going back to it, thinking about certain lines and images. So much more energetic and wily and interesting in its digressions than anything else I've read lately and just Yes! We need books like this!

rachelm Awesome! Welcome to Litsy! 8y
