The Children's Bach
The Children's Bach | Helen Garner
7 posts | 5 read | 3 to read
Athena and Dexter lead an enclosed family life, innocent of fashion and bound towards a disturbed child. Their comfortable rut is disrupted by the arrival of Elizabeth, a tough nut from Dexter's past. With her three charming, chaotic hangers-on, she draws the couple out into a world whose casual egotism they had barely dreamed of. How can they get home again?

A curious story of a family in early 80s Melbourne who appear to have a perfect life until dexter meets an old flame at the airport. When Elizabeth introduces her wild sister Vicki and her on-off boyfriend Philip to the dynamics of Athena + Dexter's life, it causes ripples from which they may not recover. Perfect writing and dialogue, which held my interest but not characters to who I warmed. I will try the author again as I know she is well loved

sarahbarnes This one is on my list. Great review. 53m

I started 2018 reading a couple of hard cover collections of Garner‘s work and so it‘s fitting that I finish it with this hard cover edition of an early novel. I have major #fangirl for Garner and an intention to read all her work.

This novel set in Melbourne in 1984 (I lived there and was 13 at the time) is about a relatively conventional family and what happens when an old friend reconnects with the husband. #ozfiction ⬇️

It was a beautifully written; an odd assortment of characters. The novel seemed to skim over the surface of the story. Sparse, but I enjoyed it all the same.

It‘s Helen Garner so of course I loved the writing but there were too many weird characters. Has anyone read this? I‘d love to hear your opinion.

AWahle Haven't read the book, but that tub is magnificent! 7y
LapReader It‘s at my mum and dad‘s farm @AWahle Mum found it at the dump and had it done up. The paint job is fantastic. It‘s hard to see in the pic but it is two different tones. 7y
