Ostensibly in Egypt to get his aunt's deceased cat mummified, Alessandro Tarabotti is on a secret mission.

Although it's not made explicit, this short story is presumably the story of how Alexia's parents met.

Ruthiella Are you on a Gail Carriger kick? I‘ve only read her debut but it was a lot of fun. 3y
rwmg @Ruthiella Yes, after her debut I wanted more so decided to read them in story chronological order. I'm hoping to read at least the first sub-series. 3y

1st Read of 2022! Yesterday I read just in case I decide to do a #Great2022ParasolverseReread. And it's a great short story to start off the year. 🤓

3/5⭐ Carriger's usual humor was great, but overall I found the story lacking. I also really didn't like the full cast audio narration with distracting background music and sounds.

A bit of silly fun. I‘ve never read Gail Carriger before but I enjoyed this for light reading. It reminded me of Sax Rohmer, but with less racism.

I loved seeing a glimpse of what badassery Algernon Floote is capable of. Otherwise, this novella would be a skip for me since we didn't get to learn that much about Alexia's dad.

I find I absorb Carriger‘s books a bit better on audiobook. Possibly because all the narrators do an excellent job. I am starting my reread a little late to be on schedule for the read along but I plan to catch up quickly.

MidnightBookGirl I feel the same way! I tried ti read Soulless many times, but the audiobook was what got me hooked. 6y
Johanna414 Agreed! 6y
KeepCalmWithBooksAndCoffee @MidnightBookGirl I read some of them before I discovered the audio and I‘m never going back! 6y
ApplesandSpindles Good to know! I will add to my audio list. 6y

The final book of the Custard Protocol will be published later this year. I know there are some members of the #ParasolProtectorate here that may not be in the Facebook group - there‘s a readalong, in the order that Carriger recommends, that starts with the tagged book and ends with Reticence (forthcoming). If you‘re new to this series, this is a good time to join in! I re-read some of the books fairly recently so I might not read them all again.

As my role model has always been Auntie Mame; this speaks to me:
“I have an eccentric aunt,” replied Mr Tarabotti, as though that were explanation enough.
“Don‘t we all, my dear fellow? Don‘t we all?”

Mandigolightly I *am* the eccentric aunt 6y

Floote totally sounds like Carson from Downton Abbey in my head:
“Not your aunt‘s feline, sir. The reports were perfectly correct; no one remembers how to mummify anymore. I found a willing apothecary, but the results were, regrettably...” A delicate pause. “Squishy."
And so begins #parasolversereadalong

kgriffith Well that‘s a readalong I can hardly resist, though I might just do the shorts in between the full-length ones I‘ve already read 😊 I do love her stuff! 6y
kgriffith @Crinoline_Laphroaig Fun, thanks! This is the sort of thing I miss when I take a long twitter break 😬 6y

This one was ~alright~ imo. It doesn‘t match the fun romp-ishness of the others, and the ending was unsatisfying, but Carriger‘s writing is always entertaining

julesG I'll check which books I already have and which I still need. If I buy them this year, they won't fall under the book buying ban and will count for my #MountTBRchallenge 😜 6y

1. Dracula. Probably better conversation, however brief.

2. Tear away!

3. Hmmmmm. Both.

4. I am not a collector, I just wants my words. Dog-ear is fine.

5. Tough one. Yes, serial killers are too real. I don't like reading about them or hearing about them. All that stuff really bugs me out. However, when I read about werewolves, all I can think about is the smell. So, I guess it's a tie! 🔪🐺

#bookishwouldyourather

sprainedbrain The smell! I had never thought of that. 😂 7y
Kalalalatja I never thought about the smell of werewolfs either 😂 7y

Short, sweet and a good look into Alessandro Tarabotti. I'm glad Carriger didn't try to make him likeable but stayed true to his character.
